I will play my final junior Wimbledon: Sania

New Delhi, Apr 27 (UNI) Putting rest to speculation that she might skip the Wimbledon this year, Sania Mirza has said she would participate at the Grand Slam as this would be her last year to compete at the junior level.

The defending Wimbledon junior doubles champion said she would first go to Italy next month for training and then finalise the itinerary but in all probability would play in the Wimbledon.

Sania, partnering Alisa Kleybanova of Russia, became the first-ever Indian girl to have won a Grand Slam title when she triumphed in the girls' doubles event at the Wimbledon last year.

''I would try to give my last shot at the junior level as from next year it will be all seniors. Though I plan to play more at the senior level but Wimbledon is a different arena altogether,'' Sania told UNI here.

The-17-year-old said she was nursing two minor injuries -- in the toes and wrist. ''The injuries that I developed while playing the Fed Cup, were a cause of some worry for me but they did not come in the way of performance,'' she added.

Sania said the best time of her life till date was when she got the junior Wimbledon doubles title. ''I will definitely try to defend the title,'' she added.

The teen-sensation expressed concern over her inconsistency in big matches. ''I have won big matches but squandered in some others.

I have to be a little more consistent,'' she noted.

She, however, felt happy at the way she was hitting the ball in her recent matches. ''My ground shots were coming good. But there is some problem with the shot selection.'' Sania said her ambition was to get into the top 20 in the Women's tennis and her favourite player was Steffi Graf.

Sania Mirza eyeing for senior doubles in Wimbledon

By IndiaExpress Bureau

After her stupendous success in the junior circuit of Wimbledon last year, India's teen tennis sensation Sania Mirza is now making a determined bid to enter the senior league and go for the senior doubles title in the prestigious tournament.

"This time around I may not play the junior doubles but am seriously thinking of entering the fray in the seniors doubles section", Sania told a news agency in Hyderabad today.

Sania, who is currently ranked 189, is looking for a good partner in the women's doubles section of this year's Wimbledon slated to be held in June.

Though she has an "outside chance" to get into the main draw of women doubles, the 17-year-old is hoping that she will find a partner.

"Earlier, I thought of playing the doubles in junior circuit for one last time but have almost given up the idea now," she said, adding that her focus will be on seniors though singles is ruled out at this stage.

A combined ranking of 235 is needed to play the senior doubles at Wimbledon and Sania, with a ranking of 189, has to pair with a player with a ranking of 46 which may make the task of the 12th standard Hyderabad girl a little difficult.

Strange -- she almost certainly won't find someone in the top 46 to pair with her, so I'm not sure why she is backing off the idea of playing the junior doubles... I'm not sure why she can't just try and play both?
