View Full Version : Lena in Warsaw

Lena had two matches in Portugal, and now returns to the city where she won her second singles title.
Lena moved up to #30 in the rankings last week. A good run here will get her fitter for the big clay events.

Lena's only about 300 points out of the top 20. She should get there by Wimbledon.

Give Lena a chance. Coming back from an injury on clay is hard. Lena isn't match tough.
Warsaw will be better. Berlin even better. Then we need a good draw at Roland Garros.

Lena beating any decent Top 150 clay player = :haha:

goldenlox
Apr 14th, 2004, 11:25 PM
Last year at Roland Garros, Lena beat Golovin 6-4, 6-1.

- L i n a -
Apr 14th, 2004, 11:29 PM
Wow! I bet no other girls on tour could beat a 14-year old out of the Top 500.

Let's give Lena a medal.

No points to defend.

Why fight GL on this Leenah? She won't give in. And she does have a point. Lena has a good chance to make the top 20 with some good results. :)

- L i n a -
Apr 15th, 2004, 12:30 AM
Nancy Loeffler-Caro could reach the Top 20 with some good results too.

Doesn't mean it's happening.

goldenlox

I don't even know who Nancy Loeffler-Caro is. Lena is in the top 30, with nothing to defend.
Lena has to hold her serve. That was her problem in Melbourne, too.

It will happen for Lena, Leenah. :) You gotta believe! :bounce:

Look how Serena withdrew today. You don't want to come back from an injury and play 5 matches.
Lena should benefit from just playing twice this week. Once she lost the second set, I wasn't upset about the match. I don't want Lena to have consecutive 3 hour battles.

I hope Lena gets to play at least two matches. But I would like to see a steady progression. Quarters at the Tier I's, maybe a semi at RG.

K... I have to be nice now on this board... but you can imagine my reaction.

I'd like to see at least the semis in singles. But I want another slam championship in doubles.
Lena can win a title at every major this year.

Lena is 2-0, both in straight sets against Katarina. Lena will have to play well, but it's a good draw.

- L i n a -
Apr 25th, 2004, 05:49 PM
Not a good draw...

Suarez or Pisnik in 2R doesn't look promising.

goldenlox
Apr 25th, 2004, 05:53 PM
It could be Amelie or Venus. This draw is fine.

- L i n a -
Apr 25th, 2004, 05:56 PM
True... actually looking at it... Suarez might be the best seed Lena could face right now.

Still though, I'm not holding my breath that Lena gets through to the Qtrs.

I do think Lena will get by Srebotnik fairly comfortably, though.

Yes, but Lena is playing with her...

I'm feeling fairly certain that Lena is a lesbian now... since she's played with Conchita, and now Denisa.

That's good... but let's get together with non-butches.

A munchkin kitty has very short legs all of their life, and they remain kitten-like (physically and playfully) all their life.

I enjoyed reading about Munchkin cats, Lina. They are very cute and personable. :) You must love your Mimi! :D

GL, I hope your neighbor has gotten his cats neutered and spayed since the batch of 6 kittens were born that produced your 2 cats. It's important for pet owners to act responsibly. And KP, it sounds like you and your family are respponsible pet owners. I hope your 2 cats have been neutered and spayed. By the way I will try to only refer to you as KP when we are talking cats or feline issues. :cat:

goldenlox
May 5th, 2004, 01:21 AM
Yeah, no kittens here. My parents said the male cat had to be altered, or we couldn't keep him. I wanted the girl to have kittens, but again I was overruled.

The neighbor's cat has kittens all the time.

the cat
May 5th, 2004, 01:52 AM
I'm glad you've been overruled by your parents, KP. :) And there is an over population of cats and dogs in this country and animal shelters coast to coast and border to border are filled with cats and dogs that need to be adopted, or else. So it saddens me that your neighbor lets their cat have kiitens when the animal shelters in your area are overflowing with kittens to be adopted.

I'm here. Make sure you put down newspaper when the cat sounds like she'll vomit.

the cat
May 11th, 2004, 03:00 AM
That's so true GL. It's always good to have some newspaper handy when a cat gets sick.

But my wanting to talk about cats tonight is to vent about cats have been mistreated through the years. It's just so sad. Cats are the most abused animals on earth and terrible pet owners with big vicious dogs are especially dangerous to stray and pet cats as this New York Post story from May 7, 2004 proves. The story is located at www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/20382.htm (http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/20382.htm) and reports that a vicious Pit Bull-Rottweiler mix named "Aries" was allowed to kill pet cats over and over again even after being sent to an animal shelter numerous times for the cat killings. But the dog was released back to it's terrible dog owners time and time again and the same thing happened time after time. And in the New York Post newspaper edition on May 7, 2004 the New York Post printed a photo of a cute little girl holding her adorable cat "Cupcake" who was killed by the dog. Aries the Pit Bull-Rottweiller mix would get out of it's yard and find someone's pet cat to kill and it did several times. :( Now what? The dog's owners aren't owning up to this sad situation. Instead of apologizing to the grief sticken families who have had their pet cats bruatlly killed by this dog, the dog's owner's husband is complaining about possibly losing their homeowners insurance because of their dangerous dog. What nerve after his wife's dog has hurt several families by killing their pet cats! I hope the dog is euthanized because he could attack a person while he is attacking a cat. A nd vicious dogs have been euthanized for alot less than killing atleast 5 pet cats like Aries has done. And there is no telling how mnay stray cats he has killed too. Becuase of the political intrigue in this story and the lack of records of Aries being impounded, I don't think the dog will be euthanized. But he should be. I think Aries will get sent to the pound for good. GL and Lina, what do you think should happen to this dangerous dog? And remeber to keep an eye on your pet cats. Even when you think they are safe outside. I have never come across dogs killing pet or stray cats in any neighborhood I have ever lived in. But cat killiing dogs are more prevalent in our society than you might think. :( And it's about time cats started receiving better protection under the Law.

goldenlox
May 11th, 2004, 03:06 AM
I heard that in parts of the world people eat monkey brains, from live monkeys.

the cat
May 11th, 2004, 03:15 AM
What does that have to do with what I posted about Aries the dog killing pet cats and basically getting away with it which is an absolute travesty? People will do strange things in all parts of the world. And eating monkey brains is about as strange as it gets.

goldenlox
May 11th, 2004, 03:17 AM
There are people who bet on fighting animals. Pitbulls, or roosters.
How about baby seals being clubbed, then skinned alive.
There are people who are tortured.

the cat
May 11th, 2004, 03:39 AM
Yes GL those are terrible artocities. I'm a proud long time member of a couple organizations that fight people and animal abuse. And I understand that people being abused and tortured is a worse atrocity than a dog killing cats. But sadly the world is full of all kinds of human and animal atrocities.

The Pit Bulls fighting for money is out of control! And people go around looking to snatch neighborhood pets for bait for these Pit Bulls. The people who participate in this treat it like it's a sport. But it's a crime and people sometimes go to jail who are involved in Pit Bull fights.

goldenlox
May 11th, 2004, 03:46 AM

goldenlox
May 11th, 2004, 07:15 PM
I can't go to bed thinking about dogs that kill cats. There are no loose dogs where I live. My cats were lying in the driveway when I just got home.
Anyway, one of my cats killed a bird, or found a dead bird. She was trying to bring it in the house. That's disgusting.

the cat
May 11th, 2004, 07:50 PM
But the difference is if your cat killed a neighbors pet bird, pet hamster or pet rabbit or several of them the way Aries the cat killing dog killed as many as 7 pet cats in Long Beach traumatizing the owners of the killed cats your pet cat and it's owner would be in trouble and rightfully so for killing a neighbors pet. But there is one big difference. A pet cat is not deemed a threat to humans the way cat killing dogs are. Aries next victim might have been a child.

GL, it sounds like your 2 cats are enjoying themselves basking in the sun on your driveway. :) Remember to give them water in the hot weather. And I'm very glad you don't have dangerous dogs or any dogs for that matter running loose in your neighborhood.

We have kids under 10 running around here. This is a residential neighborhood. Just houses, no stores on my block. My cats are outside nibbling on the grass.

I'm glad you live in a good neighborhood, GL. It sounds like the kind of neighborhood where people are happy and friendly. :) And I gather it's a good neighborhood for pets, too. :cat: :dog:

A loose dog around here would be very noticeable. When the weather is great like today, lots of kids are out now.

GL, it turns out that Aries the serial cat killer dog in Long Beach that killed as many as 7 pets cats has been given his sentence by Long Beach officials as the New York Post explains in it's article located at www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/20448.htm (http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/20448.htm). Long Beach officials have decided that instead of being euthanized, Aries will spend the rest of his life in an animal shelter. Because Aries killed so many pet cats and upset the families that owned these cats I was hoping that Aries would be euthanized. I really think he deserved to be euthanized. But I can live with Aries being kept in an animal shelter the rest of his like because he can't kill any more cats and upset families from the inside of an animal shelter. There were really only 2 choices for Aries. Be euthanized or spend the rest of his life in an animal shelter. I would have preferred Aries be euthanized but I can accept his being kept in an animal shelter the rest of his life. Now Long Beach residents and cat owners can rest peacefully again now that Aries has been sentenced to life in an animal shelter. GL, which of the 2 choices did you think was most fair for Aries? Be euthanized or be sentenced to an animal shelter for the rest of his life? We don't see eye to eye on everything so I am interested in your choice.

The dog doesn't know he's doing anything wrong. Cats kill mice and birds. There's the whole food chain in nature.
But if the dog is dangerous, what's the point in keeping him alive.

GL, I agree with you about if the dog is dangerous what is the point of keeping him alive? But that's what the Long Beach officials have decided.

And I agree with you about the animal food chain and how some dogs kill cats and get a thrill out of doing it becuase it comes naturally to them. But dogs like Aries are capable of going from killing pet cats to biting a child holding the cat. And that's why cat killing dogs are routinely euthanized.

The animal food chain in action! My sister lives in an area of Long Island where there is a large colony of feral cats in the bushes and woods behind the apartment complex. My sister even took in a 3 legged cat living there. But there were so many feral cats at one time (estimated to be 50 or more) causing problems that a couple of the tenants threatened to turn their dogs loose on the feral cats if animal control didn't start trapping the cats. Animal control did try to alleviate the situation, but there still are alot of feral cats there. Although there aren't as many as their used to be. And occasionally one of the big dogs at the apartment complex will kill one of the feral cats. Sometimes it's an accident and a feral cat or kitten will be resting in the bushes and someone walking their dog on a long leash will see or smell the cat and dive into the bushes to get the feral cat. And some of the dog owners have been know to turn their dogs loose on the feral cats living behind the apartment complex. These dog owners say they are doing the cats a favor by keeping them from starving and reproducing and becoming problem cats. Animal control tried to keep an eye on this sitaution. But they are overwhelmed with numerous animal problems and complaints and their hands are tied. So if one of the tenants wants to turn their dog lose on a feral cat or a colony of feral cats there isn't much anyone can do. And there is a man that owns a very big Doberman across the parking lot from my sister. This Doberman must be over 100 pounds. And this large Doberman has has been seen rooting out feral cats and feral kittens from the bushes on many occasions over the past couple of years to the sheer delight of his owner who gets almost as big a thrill and rush from the cat killing as his huge cat killing Doberman does! I think it's sad. But there really isn't much that can be done to stop it because these cats aren't someon's pet cats they are feral cats. The truth is feral cats are wild cats who are prey for a dog that can catch them. Some people including animal experts think it's necessary to try to keep the feral cat population under control in various ways. Including having dogs kill feral cats. And they have a point. They say the dogs like this big Doberman are only doing what comes naturally to them and aren't being cruel when infact they are helping keep the feral cat population under control by killing as many feral cats as they can. In a way it's probably just the animal food chain in action.

There's a stray cat in my neighborhood. He's very skinny. I sometimes feed him, and he gobbles it all up.
He needs to be brushed and washed, but I'm not doing it.

You're a good cat person, KP. But it seems as though you don't like to get your paws dirty. ;)

By the way GL, congrats on 7000 posts at WTA World! :D

Cats are fine when they're not making a mess. They even wash themselves.
But in this warm weather, they have to be brushed all the time.

Yeah, they stetch and hold that position for a few seconds. I like when they hear a noise and run towards it. Like a can opener.

Would that be dangerous? They're not next to each other. The cats eat in a different room, next to the kitchen.
We don't want them jumping on the kitchen table.

Off base. GL, maybe I'm off base in thinking that Aries the serial pet cat killing dog from Long Beach should have been euthanized for his killing of 5 to 7 pet cats in Long beach. I was talking to a woman who works at a local animal shelter that I have given donations to in the past. And we got to talking about cats and dogs. And then I asked her about Aries and if she followed the story. And she said she did and when I told her I thought Aries she should have been euthanized she said she didn't think he should have been destroyed because he never attacked or even charged a person even though he killed 5 to 7 pet cats. She said Aries is only 3 years old with much of his life left to live and that Aries irresponsible pet owners were to just as much to blame for his cat killing spree as his strong prey drive. Even though this lady was sympathetic to the families of the cats Aries killed she did make Aries cat killing spree sound almost normal. She then told me that her animal shelter occasionaly gets cat killing dogs adopted if they can find the dog a home without cats. Some people bring their problems dogs to the animal shelter for various reasons including stray cat and pet cat killings. The dog owners don't want to deal with these problems and that's why they get rid of their dog. It's sad. She told me it's easier to find a home for a dog that has a history of killing stray cats than a dog who has a history of killing pet cats. She said people are routinely unconcerned that one of their dogs has a history of killing stray cats. But getting dogs adopted who have a history of killing a pet cat is a little trickier and harder to do. She went on to say as long as they tell the person wanting to adopt a dog that it has a history of killings cats then they have done their job and that person can adopt the dog if they understand the dogs history and seem to have a suitable cat free home for the dog. It was just amazing how routine she made all of this and the Aries controversy sound.

Aries life sentence in the Long Beach animal shelter for killing 7 pet cats and running loose without a license was overturned May 21, 2004 and he was returned to his negligent owner and the neighborhood where he killed 7 pet cats. The owners of the killed pet cats are upset about this latest move. :( And I don't blame them. I still don't understand why one cat killing dog's life is worth more than the 7 pet cat's lives he brutally ended. It's so unfair! The News 12 article updating Aries situation is located at http://news12.com/LI/topstories/article?id=107682Aries. Aries owner was only fined $50 and he had to promise that Aries would always be on a leash when he is off his property. I bet that's a promise Aries owner John Feiler won't keep. Dividing $50 by 7 pet cats comes out to $7.14 per pet cat killed. That's hardly any satisfactory retribution for the cat owners of the 7 killed cats. But of Aries kills another cat or is caught running loose again then he probably will be in alot of trouble this time. News 12 tried to interview Feiler about Aries cat killing saga but he refused the interview. I have heard of cats having 9 lives. But so does this cat killing dog. Aries keeps slipping through the cracks and always finds his way back home. I do think Aries should have to undergo some kind of obedience training that will curtail his drive to kill cats. I had my 2 dogs go to obediance school when they were small and it did them some good. And obedience training can help Aries too. The point is his owner should be forced to make Aries go to obedience school. But apparently that isn't the case. And Feiler's promise to keep Aries on a leash when Aries is off his property isn't worth much. It's a shame that irresponsible dog owners like John Feiler make dog owners in general look bad and negligent. But he thinks he and Aries are above the law. And in this case he was unfortunately correct. :( I just hope that Aries is kept away from cats and kept away from situations where he could bite a child.
