Melanie just won her first senior singles title in India so thought I would start a cheering thread for her.

Her ranking should be edging toward the top 500 soon and she will have no points to defend until September when .75 comes off for Amiens.

Good luck in 2004 Melanie :wavey:

Saw Mel play Sarah at birmingham was a tough match the difference in the end was Sarahs serve and she had more power in the forehand.

Don't think Mel played very well, in the third set she would dictate points then miss the put away shot a few too many times.

Hope she gets a good draw at wimbledon and shows us what shes capable of.

Good luck in Spain Melanie :)

Nice write up on GB TennisGirls website from someone who watched Melanie v Perry.

"Didn't see Mel's first match, but saw her match against Perry. It was to be expected really, given all the pressure that was placed on her. She was more powerful and aggressive than Perry, but Perry has a very nice net game, and a troublesome slice which caused a few problems for Mel. In the second set, there were many close games that Perry just seemed to end up winning, but Mel never crumbled horribly and kept fighting to the end, giving us a few 'wow' shots to boot. Very nice to see her play again, and she will be good."

Wow we might end the year with 3 girls top 200. Maybe even 4 if Katie can get herself there but shes got slightly more to defend.

If Bally was healthy we could have 5. When was the last time that happened?

With Naomi on her way that should be 6 players and back up from Becky LL, Sarah Coles, Amanda Janes and Jane O'Donaghue. In 12 months time we should have 10 players top 300 and more players coming through aswell, i'm getting quite excited about british womens tennis i think we have turned the tide and they top 100/50 players are coming through.

South to face Cavaday in Quarters

Mel South is the second seed in Mount Gambier
Melanie South will face Naomi Cavaday in the quarter finals of the Mount Gambier $25K event in Australia after both players won their second round matches on Thursday.

The duo are only two of seven British players to make the final eight - with Natasha Khan, Rebecca Llewellyn, Georgie Stoop, Emily Webley-Smith and Jane O'Dongohue all falling in the earlier stages.

Second-seeded South followed up her 6-4, 6-2 opening round victory over Frenchwoman Violette Huck with a 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 win over German Antonia Matic. Matic had previously beaten the 20-year-old from Surrey at a Chinese event in early August.

"Since arriving from China, I've worked really hard on and off the court both physically and mentally." Mel South

South will now face British No.10 Naomi Cavaday for a place in the semi-finals. Cavaday followed up her her opening round 7-5, 6-2 win over fellow-Brit Emily Webley-Smith with a 6-3, 6-1 win over 6th seed Florence Haring of France.

Dubai doubles success for South

British No.2 Mel South
Mel South and Australian Sophie Ferguson beat the top seeds in the first round of the doubles at the $75K Dubai ITF event on Wednesday.

South and Ferguson fought their way past Wimbledon doubles semi-finalist and world No.36 Juliana Fedak of Ukraine and German world No.120 Julia Schruff 7-6, 6-4.

South and Ferguson – playing together for the first time – fought back from 2-5 in the first set and 1-3 in the second.

It was a case of sweet revenge for South, who with fellow-Briton Katie O’Brien lost to Fedak in the first round at Wimbledon this year.

The Ukraine 23-year-old partnered compatriot Tatiana Perebiynis on their way to the semi-finals in SW19. Fedak also made the last 16 of the doubles at the French Open with Ukraine’s Alona Bondarenko.

South is the British No.2 in singles and doubles with a current WTA doubles world ranking of No.198. Ferguson, who works on a part-time basis with Roger Federer’s coach, Tony Roche, is the world doubles No.189.

Roger Federer is out here in Dubai too... he has a place here and also uses the conditions of Dubai to prepare himself for Australia.

Lucie Ahl

“I enjoyed playing with Sophie,” South said. “She has a good serve and is positive at the net which encouraged me to be the same.”

South’s coach, Lucie Ahl, who watched part of the match with Roche, said playing the Dubai event has turned out to be an excellent decision.

“I felt it was a good move for Mel play out here in Dubai not just because she was in the main draw but also for us to taste the same conditions that Mel will be playing in when she travels to Australia just after Christmas,” Ahl said.

“Since Mel lost her singles on Monday we’ve been out on the practice court working on some specific parts of her game as well as playing with a different combination of girls who are out here. We’ve also been spending a lot of time in the gym.

“It’s perfect being here – there are plenty of courts and girls ranked in the top 200 as well as a great gym and the kind of heat and breezy conditions expected in New Zealand and Australia.

“Roger Federer is out here in Dubai with Tony Roche, too, until just before Christmas. Roger has a place here and also uses the conditions of Dubai to prepare himself for Australia.”

Interesting article and encouraging view from Carl Maes. Keep working hard Melanie, it will all pay off in the long run. :)

New Malden's Melanie South will come back a better player from her current slump in form, according to Britain's head of women's tennis.

The 20-year-old has made a torrid start to 2007, winning just one of her last 11 matches.

The former Nonsuch School student reached the second round of Wimbledon last year, secured her first $25,000 title and peaked at 166 in the world rankings.

But the dip in form saw Britain's number two singles and doubles player this week omitted from Federation Cup captain Nigel Sears' team for this month's round-robin style competition in Bulgaria.

The LTA's Carl Maes, former coach to one-time world number one Kim Clijsters, believes South should not panic.

"If you have a really good year, the next year is always more difficult because you have to do as well - if not better - just to maintain your rankings," he said.

"She has had a difficult start and maybe part of that was because she lost some continuity with the coaching staff here and we have to hold our hands up to that.

"We cannot fault her for effort, but mentally she is lacking a bit of confidence in comparison to last year when she won a lot more matches.

"She needs to get through this rough ride, go into the uncomfortable zone and then surpass it to come out on top."

Maes, speaking at the LTA's £32million National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, was appointed to his post in November 2006 after leading Belgium to only their second Federation Cup final.

The Belgian is charged with unearthing Britain's most talented girls and believes tennis needs to be a more attractive option for the country's future champions.

"I want to make an impact on the number of girls playing tennis and make the game look a bit more sexy," he said.

"Because of the male dominance of the sport and poor results in the women's game, parents of young girls don't see tennis as an option for their children. I want to change that."
