Melanie ... Now in Bendigo for her last tournament before travelling home for Xmas :)

Melanie is playing Emily Fanning in the first round. Melanie beat Emily Fanning 7-5 6-2 in the first round in Wellington, but Emily was a wild card there, and she is a qualifier in Bendigo. The weather is much better in Bendigo than it is in London. So Melanie will presumably be particularly motivated to stay in this tournament as long as possible.

Thank you, WIMBY, for the livestream link! I managed to see quite a lot of the match!

Shocked she is here over Japan given the points she needs to try and defend.

I can understand it when young people decide to go to other countries rather than Japan at the moment. Health considerations are also important for tennis players, and not just which tournaments might bring them the most points.

Hope she can find a way to win a couple of matches over the next 3 events.

I also hope that Melanie can soon get back to her winning ways.

Misaki Doi, who beat Mel in the singles qualies went on to qualify, and made 3rd Round Main Draw, beating Beth Mattek-Sands on the way, so was presumably on good form. That always seems better somehow than losing to someone who then tamely loses in the next round.

why has she dropped so far down the rankings, she was in the top 100 briefly in 2009...

Interesting post from Sarah Borwell on GB Tennis Girls explains what happens

What usually happens and has been the trend for years. the elite juniors get a lot of funding and a coach doing everything for them. As they try and transition from juniors to seniors they of course start to stall as the transition is tough and usually takes 4 years to really get to grips with. these players who have stalled then lose funding and the coach. As they haven't hard to deal with traveling alone, understanding how to cope when you don't have that support system around you, they stall even more and usually go backwards. vicious cycle again which will continue to happen unfortunately. I think Tennis Australia have it right. you don't get a coach all the time and when you do get a coach you have to pay partly towards it. Allows you to understand the cost of tennis and you never take it for granted, so you work harder and realize the need to WIN!

It's getting waaaay ahead of ourselves, but yeah, a tournament win would put her within sight of the magic 250.

With her ranking going in the right direction, with few other obvious candidates, and a maximum of three British ladies above here in the queue, you gotta imagine she'd get it.

It looks like Heather Watson will climb inside the top 108 in time for Wimbledon which means a good result by South in Japan could line her up alongside Robson and Broady as wc.
I have not followed Mel South's career in recent times, I think her best period was Summer 08 and early 09, that defeat to Larcher De Brito at Roland Garros after taking the first set 6-0 must have really hurt.

Melanie South is obviously a much better player than her ranking suggests.

Looking back to the Summer of 2008 she played in the main draw of two events on the main tour on the US hard court season and reach the final round of qualifying for the US Open that year.

South notably played three out of the four majors in 2009 losing a titanic match to Larcher De Brito at Roland Garros 0-6 7-6 7-5 so she obviously can play the game.
