Vera probably just stepped her game up a level too high. Its really unfortunate for Mel, but we can only hope now for a good draw! Is anyone going to follow the draw live on Radio Wimbledon? Its exciting following the draw live i think :P

When is the draw done?

Tough loss, but it's better to peak at Wimbledon and not here in Eastbourne ;) Hopefully Mel will have a bit more luck next week

Jun 15th, 2009, 08:27 PM
Well done in Eastbourne Mel: Great first match coming back and winning in 3, second match was just awesome tennis defeating such a highly ranked player fitness really paying off and the third match was going well v another good top player in the first set but Vera stepped it up. Great experience gained again on the grass and Wimbledon to look forward to. Hoping you get a good draw this year. :)

Melanie plays Mathilde Johansson

Jun 19th, 2009, 10:14 AM
I like that draw tbh - it has to better than some of her others! 5 match lose streak for Mathilde :)

Jun 19th, 2009, 10:16 AM
Yeah, Mel should win this. Johannson is a GCM.

Love Mels draw! I think as we were all saying, its about time Mel wins a match at Wimb and then she gets this chance, it looks good!

Jun 19th, 2009, 05:33 PM
^^ She's already won at Wimbledon  She beat Schiavonne on her debut ! I like this draw hope she plays some blistering tennis to make round 3 !

Jun 19th, 2009, 08:39 PM
Mel did not draw a seed :bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

Good luck Mel :)

Jun 20th, 2009, 07:35 AM
mel should win this:) and if she plays vera in round 2 (although i would love her to play georgie) she should play on center or court 1

Tough doubles draw, good luck Mel, wherever you end up playing tomorrow!

Jun 22nd, 2009, 04:41 PM
When is she playing + on what court?

Jun 22nd, 2009, 08:27 PM
What a shame. I really thought mel was gonna take that second set tie break:sad:. She was sending down some absolute thunderbolt serves.

Jun 22nd, 2009, 08:33 PM
i didnt think her serve was as good as it was last year. and her groundstrokes were very poor. its very disapointing because she shouldve won this match:(

Jun 22nd, 2009, 08:43 PM
 :( Should've done better! She had the best possible draw and blew it lots of points to defend now :tape:!

Jun 22nd, 2009, 10:25 PM
Mel played a better second set, sending down second serves over 100 was quite impressive, thought she was going to take the tie break. Anyway, good luck in doubles Mel/Jos.

Jun 22nd, 2009, 11:18 PM
Unlucky Melanie, played so much better in 2008.

I really want to see Melanie smile more on court, show more positive emotion. Ofcourse you have to be the right state of mind, but Georgie Stoop was smiling so nicely and played great today.

Good Luck for the doubles!

Jun 23rd, 2009, 12:02 AM
Stats are impressive, 5 aces and serving up to 111. Mathilde is ranked 87 but has been as high as 59, a better player than appears on paper. Had Melanie taken the tie break and the match stopped for light, who knows. More experience of playing on the big stage gained and now doubles and hopefully mixed doubles to look forward to. Good luck Mel. :)

Still too slow around the court, if Mel could have gotten to some more balls from Johansson, even if she was just moonballing them in it would have helped her. Really have no idea why she was struggling so much on her own serve. Missed chance here

Jun 24th, 2009, 08:31 PM
She's into round 2 of the doubles :D :woohoo: :bounce: South / Rae d Bondarenko's 6-1 7-6 (4)

Jun 25th, 2009, 09:14 AM
Good doubles win, Ive always believed that she would be a far more better doubles player than singles player. They have a good chance of getting quite far into the tournament, so lets hope they do.

Im realy glad Mel is back on the tour after Wimb, joining Katie and Georgie as the only Brits entered in events bigger than 25k! Its been a realy good choice of events, as she is seeded 3rd and can really do some damage! Sounds like she is enjoying herself - I have a good feeling about the US hardcourt events, I think Mel is going to do quite nicely :)

Seems like she put up quite a fight. Hard luck Mel :awww:

Last years L.A points came off a few weeks ago, so at least she won't fall down the ranking any further.

Aug 3rd, 2009, 12:54 PM
Yeah true, its strange why the american tournaments change around, any way she doent have any points to defend from now to us, so hopefully she can do well in the next couple of tournaments.

Toughie from Mel, but an encouraging performance that things might be getting back on track. A win would have been nicer, of course, but it's still a decent showing

Aug 4th, 2009, 11:49 AM

Morita d Baltacha 7-5 6-2. Sucks, but not as bad as her other losses. Doesnt look like Bally has the mental strength to make the push into the top 100.

Aug 8th, 2009, 04:16 PM
well bally doesnt have any big points to defend all year so she has good chance of doing so:)

65% first serve points
41% second serve points
7 aces
9 double faults

According to slam tracker neither player hit a winner :spit: but this isn't included on the official stats, so I'm thinking/hoping it was wrong

At Nottingham in the first round, Mona Barthel beat Melanie South 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-3. Melanie was leading 6-4 in the tie break.Sad Mel lost, but I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Barthel. She seems to me like a bit of an anglophile as she always says she likes playing in Britain (and there's a nice picture on her website of her camping in the Yorkshire Dales!)

Lost singles, soooo close

regrouped

and won an awesome doubles with Anne defeating the 4th seeds well done Mel :bounce::bounce:

Jun 2nd, 2010, 10:38 AM
Here is a translation from the German of Mona Barthel's report of the match:

Wow!! Won!!! Yes!! Melanie played soooo well. She put so much pressure on and hit absolutely everything. I could tell that grass is her favourite surface. Consequently, she led 6-3 and 5-3 30-0. However, from then on I found the right tactics and changed my game somewhat. She then had two match points in the tie break, but I was able to win it 8-6. She also played well and put pressure on in the third set. I had a match point at 5-2 and actually won it (Melanie‘s shot was 20 cm out, which is not even near), but the umpire ruled it in and Melanie was able to win the game. At 5-3 the same thing happened. The umpire ruled another of Melanie’s shots in although it was out, but on the next match point she hit the net, so that the situation was clear cut and it was a complete relief. And I was mega happy.

Tough match Mel v Anna but well fought and good luck with Anne in doubles :devil:

Jun 7th, 2010, 12:26 PM
Mel had Chak on the tip of her racket!!! She was up a break in the second set. She should have won this! I think Mel needs to work on her consistency. She may want to get some tips from Bally.

Jun 7th, 2010, 06:04 PM
Bally has jumped ahead this year but is 3 years older. Melanie will be gutted to lose that match but in tennis the experience is gained on the court so she will take this to her next match. Roll on Wimbledon

Report from someone who watched today

Just got back from the tennis today (going again tomorrow) so thought I'd summarize for you...

Mel "Don't let me go a break up" South vs Chekvetadze

Oh Mel. Mel Mel Mel. Trying to find an adjective that sums it up is near impossible. I would be quite keen to defend her by saying it wasn't a choke...but from the scores it's difficult not to. To be fair though this match was all about the Russian. For the first 1 and 3/4 sets she didn't look like she wanted to be there, and Mel played a very solid match, doing all that she needed to to get ahead. Then at 6-3 4-1 40-15 (2 BPs to Mel) Anna was ready to throw in the towel and tried to most un-called for drop shot from the base line which somehow she pulled off and that kind of gave her a new lease of life. From then on Mel never really looked like she thought she could win (but I guess when you've had the last few months that she has had it's understandable). Even at 4-1 in the third you could sense that if Mel didn't break or hold her next service game it was going to be hard for her to get the win. Overall there are some positives that Mel can get from it but there's no point in saying she should be pleased with how she played because she should have won in straight sets and getting ready for her next match tonight. But que sera sera...

Review of the day.

Best and worst performance: Mel

Clearly playing well to get herself into winning positions in each set but got tight when the winning post approached. With any sort of confidence Mel would have taken a big scalp quite comfortably today.

Jun 8th, 2010, 10:57 PM
Although Anne/Mel are on the order of play for their doubles tomorrow, weather forecast makes this doubtful :rain:

Jun 10th, 2010, 10:04 PM

From LTA site
Another Briton in action on day one was Mel South who was playing Regina Kulikova of Russia on Court five, and it was the Russian who took the match in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-2.

South had her work cut out against the world No.69 who returned to Wimbledon this year after reaching the third round in 2009.
Despite serving five aces and hitting as many winners as her Russian opponent (18), the British No.6 was unable to find her usual consistency.

From BBC site

Wildcard entry Melanie South went down 6-1 6-2 to world number 69 Kulikova, who is ranked 168 places higher than the British number five.

Kingston-born South struggled from the opening game, and was broken for the first of five times during her match.
"It wasn't my best match," she said. "On paper I wasn't expected to win but I definitely wanted a better performance. I gave it a go but it didn't pay off.

Usually my serve is my strength and, when it's not working, it's pretty hard. She just broke me too many times
Mel South
"Usually my serve is my strength and, when it's not working, it's pretty hard. She just broke me too many times."
South revealed she is battling injuries to both knees but insists she will stay on at Wimbledon to play in the doubles, where she will partner Anne Keothavong in the women's competition.
"It's an ongoing problem," she said. "The tape makes it look a lot worse than it is. It just helps to take the pressure off.
"I'm playing the doubles but when that's finished I'll speak to the doctor and check that everything is OK. It's uncomfortable but it's not career-threatening."

Jul 5th, 2010, 12:19 PM
South withdrew from $25K Woking and Wrexham. Looks like the injury is kinda serious :(
