if nigel picked mel 4 doubles im pretty sure we would be through to world group II play offs.

Yes I agree, if Anne, Mel and Elena played doubles more often, then they would probably be better than Sarah, I think this shows with Mel especially considering she only entered a few doubles tournaments last year, which she either won or got the final.
I thinnk Mel should have been picked for sure

serenus_2k8
Feb 8th, 2009, 10:24 AM
A lot of Mels worst results came while she worked with Anne, But Anne and Sarah apparantly did a lot of doubles work together. Its possible that their opponents were just on fire.

Tbh, does anyone care about Fed Cup except when its actually on? During the year I never think I wish they did better in Fed Cup, I am more likely to regret a tight loss in an actual event though!

FINALLY! Mel hasn't drawn Bartoli in a Tour event (as she isn't in Memphis), but lady luck has followed her here anyway:
M.South (GB) vs (3)L.Safarova (Cz)
:smash:

serenus_2k8
Feb 14th, 2009, 12:19 PM
Oh my :o Very tough! Didnt Safarova come quite close to beating Bartoli in AO? I cant remember, perhaps Im just confused as youve mentioned them both in ur post

If she could win though, her R2 match is winnable. Stranger things have happened.

Dawson.
Feb 14th, 2009, 12:26 PM
^ yeah she took a set from bartoli and is in good form - 12 months ago this would have seemed a lot better, but Safarova seems to be re-gaining form. They have met before, in Seoul last year. Safarova wo 6-1, 3-0 ret.

The last 4 first round WTA MD matches have been; Bartoli - Safarova - Bartoli - Bartoli - now Safarova again :o very unlucky

Oh well, sucky draws cant last forever. I have faith in Mel, I think she will take this one actually ;)

Hmm, I beg to differ...
2009: Sydney, R1 vs Bartoli
Australian Open, R1 vs [17]Bartoli
Memphis, R1 vs [3]Safarova
2008: Birmingham, R1 vs [W]Fitzpatrick
Eastbourne, R1 vs [Q]Kleybanova
Wimbledon, R1 vs [28]A.Bondarenko
Los Angeles, R2 vs Kvitova
Montreal, R1 vs [10]Bartoli
Seoul, R1 vs Safarova
2007: Eastbourne, R1 vs [W]Molik
Wimbledon, R1 vs [26]Sugiyama
2006: Birmingham, R1 vs [W]Borwell
Wimbledon, R1 vs [11]Schiavone

Out of Mel's 13 MD appearances, I think she's only had a 'decent' first round draw twice - against Sarah and Anna in Birmingham. She's always come up against a seed in the Slams, Kleybanova went on to make the fourth round of Wimbledon last year, Safarova is always dangerous and Molik was ex-top 10. Hopefully Mel will have a change in fortunes soon

Melanie had three break points in the second set. Even so, it seems that she simply won too few points altogether, and being unable to win big points in this match simply made the scoreline worse. Tamira Paszek may be better than her 74 ranking. She has been much higher and has just changed her coach. I expect this match will motivate Melanie to continue improving her game.

Good post. Melanie had a good first match defeating the Canadian No 2 Dubois. I think 2009 will be a learning curve year for Melanie and playing consistently at this new level will gain her much new experience. As you say, Tamira Paszek is a good player who has even been higher than her 74 ranking, in fact I have just checked the scoreboard and she just took the first set off Monica Niculescu who is ranked 52!! and 3-2 up in the second.

Not to bad thats she's only 4 out from MD. I think there will be a few withdrawals like Sharapova, Srebotnik and so on.
But on the other side, she will be seeded high in qualifying and can easily qualify and rack up the points.

I wouldnt count on it. RG is the worse slam for the Brits to qualify in, though the US would probs be my 2nd least fave

I would be happier if she could play for the big points off just one win, hopefully vs someone who sucks on clay.

I have to admit, I am shocked she isnt taking advantage of some of the insanely weak draws coming up. There are lots of 25k and 50k events in Asia which have shocking fields. Even the 100k in Johannesburg would be great :o

GOOD LUCK MELANIE. Hope you get a good draw after getting seeded players in your first four grand slams. Know the French is not a priority this year from looking at your training block, so anything got from it is a bonus, but know you will be looking to take a positive from it, into the grass court season and then onto the American hard court season. Tanasugarn and Morita are two names that spring to mind. The lower rungs of the rankings tend to be full of clay courters who rack up the points on the plentiful International events on clay and the large ITF events

jake270392
May 16th, 2009, 08:41 PM
Well the wildcards this year are extremely weak, so I would tend to go towards them, but then, they will have the crowd with them and they are probaly clay courters.

18/05/2009 TWO DAYS TO GO

Melanie has two days of training at NTC this week before leaving for Paris on Wednesday to prepare to play in the Main Draw next week.

from Surrey Comet today

South gunning for French Open success

A beefed-up Mel South hopes her punishing fitness schedule will pay dividends when she makes her bow in the French Open this week.

The New Malden star has maintained a low profile of late, electing to hit the gym, which has seen her world ranking slip from 99 to 124 in the past two months.

But South reckons it is simply all part of the plan.

She said: “I took the decision to take some time out as I felt I really needed to get into better shape.

“I want to go a lot further than just making the top 100, and for that my body needs to improve.

“I have taken the last seven weeks just to work on my fitness - doing a lot of track running and gym work, and I feel really good.

“Now I’m really geared up for the rest of this season and I can’t wait to get started.”

South’s French Open action will see her in the main draw thanks to her ranking.

And she admits qualifying on merit has given her a big boost.

South added: “To know I am in the draw because of my ranking is great and I will take a lot of confidence from that.

“To be honest, the only reason my ranking has dipped recently is because I haven’t been competing, but it is nothing to panic about.

“Now we are into the part of the season I love the most, with the grass courts coming up after the French Open, and that is where I am at my strongest.”

With Anne Keothavong still flying the flag for British women’s tennis, South makes no bones about her desire to improve on her status as the nation’s number three.

And the 23-year-old feels breaking back into the top 100 will be just the start.

She added: “The first thing is to break back in the top 100.

“But top 50 is my goal now.

“After the French Open and Wimbledon, I will be off to the States and then Asia to boost my ranking.

“It is a grind, but if you want to make it you have to put in the hours, and I certainly do.”

michelle has won 3 matches on clay this year(doesnt count RG) and lost 3. the three she won have been tight three setters apart from a 6-2 6-2 win against fujiwara who is pathetic on clay. her three losses have been 0-6 2-6 against bovina:o 6-4 0-6 0-6 against shahar peer and 1-6 0-6 against ALG :o

But a 6-0 set is like the most amazing start to her MD debut. Please fight for this Mel.

She is fighting, she has been all the way. Larcher de Brito loses sets 6-0 all the time and still wins anyway. Mel was apparently just playing extremely well, it's natural her level would drop, but I'm sure she's fighting, that was a good hold to avoid a double break.

if she qualifies. how many matches will she need to win at wimby to get top 100?

serenus_2k8
Jun 13th, 2009, 08:36 PM
She will have 491 points on monday because of her -70 from Bham :( Her 16th best is 10 points too. She would need to qualify here and win a match to be in with a realistic chance. If she could do that, she would have about 560ish going into Wimb, where a win would put her just on the border

Obviously she could win more here, more at Wimb or less at both, so its hard to predict, but she has about 340 points to defend for the rest of the year so she could do with winning more matches at bigger events to ease the pressure

serenus_2k8
Jun 13th, 2009, 08:48 PM
Yeh, it would be pretty awesome if she could qualify and land that spot. Mel feels happier and more confident on this surface than on any other and can see how much pressure her rank is under after not defending Bham points and will want to step it up here, so I feel shes gonna pull the upset personally. Nicole may be a bad mess, or an awesome player again as she used to be. Hard to call til we kno how she is feeling :p

Nice win for Mel! The fitness is paying off. Take out Dushevina and she is golden!

Very tough match against Dushevina, she beat Mauresmo in straight sets a couple of years ago :scared: Go for it Mel!

Mel lost 6-4 6-2. Mel had her chances in the first set trading breaks, but Dushevina broke her at the right time. First set was very close, but Mel seemed to fade in 2nd set.

... Mel seemed to fade in 2nd set.

Surely that does not mean that she is lacking fitness?
