From Melanie's site today

Melanie will leave the US today and looks forward to spending some time at home after being away for so long. She will get her ankle looked at as it has been troubling her this week and also meet her new puppy, Kodi. She thanks everyone for their messages of support whilst she has been away and sends this message

"I am working hard and I think that reaching the 3rd qualifying round of the US Open shows how close I am to reaching the top 100. Having not played my best tennis I fought really hard to make the final round and then had problems with my ankle in the last match but still fought and came close in the first set.

We players all try our best, no matter what, and we all appreciate those who support us Brits, following our results and sending messages of support. We are having the best year by far."

Quarter Final:

Melanie SOUTH (GBR) (1) defeated Shiho HISAMATSU (JPN) (8) 6-3 7-5

And a story from the Mount Gambier paper;

Australian Open the target for Melanie

Posted on October 17, 2008, 3:03pm

Top speed Melanie South won through to the semi-finals of the Mount Gambier Blue Lake Women’s International Tennis tournament today with a 6-3, 7-5 victory against Shiho Hisamatsu.
http://ezphda.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pxHoM7XpQ-5TNGjwVMFr5alEbvAb-NieMS0wdzaiN8J2bs8-zA-op8vkgpPTa2OZLdsTYEpBGDNI/melaniesouth.jpgThe powerful Englishwoman (pictured left in an earlier game) was too strong for her Japanese opponent in warm conditions.
South was given a scare in the second set though, when Hisamatsu broke serve to level the games at five apiece.
Down 15-40 in the next game South dug deep and clawed back to hold serve, then won the match with a decisive break.
Ranked 128 in the world, South told The Border Watch her objective is to win the tournament and keep winning on the satellite circuit to crack the main qualifying draw at the Australian Open.
“There’s a lot at stake for me,” she said.
“I’m aiming to get my ranking down to 110.”
South said conditions were warmer than she had experienced on previous visits to Mount Gambier, and she always felt confident against Hisamatsu.
“I knew if I stayed aggressive I’d take control,” she said.
South had a much stronger serve than Hisamatsu and aced her opponent several times. She also dominated rallies from the back of the court with her explosive forehand.
Hisamatsu worried the Englishwoman when she chipped it around and forced South to stretch for the ball with clever drop shots and lobs.
South was equal to the challenge and covered plenty of ground at speed to maintain control.
South will meet I-Husan Hwang from Taiwan in the semi-final, who she has never played before. Hwang defeated Nicole Reiner (Switzerland) 6-1, 6-3 in their quarter final.
Australian qualifier Sally Peers continued her excellent form and defeated Michaela Johansson (Sweden) 6-4, 6-1.
South African Natalie Grandin triumphed over Yurika Sema 7-5, 6-2.
Quarter final and preliminary draw results below.
Semi-final draw for Saturday: South v Hwang, Grandin v Peers.

Her ranking is going to be around 122 next week (after Traralgon points are added on), then after Mount Gambier points are added on, she will remain around 122 if she loses the final and 120 if she wins. Then if she goes on to win Port Pirie she will be ranked around 111. However, Mel will still need to play some events after the Australian series as she will have a few more points to come off.
V confusing

I think 12 of these come off after the cut off for the Oz Open cut off don't they?

When Port Pirie points come on, Mel will have 298 points, with 12 points to lose from Nuriootpa and 7 from Mount Gambier. That will take Mel down to 279 (15 tourns) and last time I looked, the #108 had 318 ranking points. Mel therefore needs to gain 39 points before 3rd December (which I think is the cut-off date), so she needs to win the $25K in India and reach the SF of the Indian $50K. Not set in stone, but that is what I can make from the rankings :)

Just had a look at the rankings and if Mel wins here and in Kolkata, then there is the possibility that she could be around the #100 mark, but of course, it all depends on what happens and the results of other players. A win in the $75K, along with winning Pune and Kolkata would take her to around the #90 mark :) All very possible, let's just hope it's not a jinx :tape:
