Melanie lost an exciting three setter, so close. After losing the first set 3-6, she took the second 6-3 and then fought hard in the third but lost 3-6 to the experienced clay courter. Melanie hit 7 aces in the match which lasted nearly two hours.

7 aces, three sets on clay and match stats are good so take this game to the grass Melanie

Training Week before the French Open
Well just a little update on what my week has been like leading up to the French Open which i am so excited about going to. It will be my first year there and will hopefully be the first of many. I arrived back from Japan and stayed at my parents place to meet the new puppy they had got whilst i had been away. She is a chocolate lab and i helped in naming her Ki Ki, she is so cute and really tiny at the moment but gets on great with my other dog Bella. I spent the next day recovering and playing with Ki Ki getting my mind and body rested before the tough week ahead.

We all know that the weather this week has been not so great. If you are thinking it has not been that bad then you have not been playing tennis on artificial clay courts out in the rain!!! the balls and courts were so heavy that it was a real effort to hit the ball over the service line but Katie and i managed some good sessions at Roehampton and i had lots of help from Luce to get me through. Most mornings i was getting up early to go and do a gym session including speed, footwork and med ball, before Lucie and i did some specifics on my game. To try to get on some clay courts and to get some sets in i was training at Roehampton with Katie, Sutton with Anna Smith and Casey Dell'Aqua(an ozzy girl) and i went to Wimbledon once to hit with Amanda Keen.

I got to see my trainer twice during the week for some specific sessions on movement to get sharpened up and more springy. Both sessions were good and hard work so if i keep on with this work i should soon see a difference on court. I am already feeling a lot better on court. I have been working really hard in the last few months and am in a lot better shape. I still have lots of hard work to do but everything is going in the right direction and it wont be long before it all pays off.

I have also gone along to Bikram yoga 3 times this week. Bikram is where you do a series of 26 postures to stretch and strengthen your muscles. It is hard work and great for your body and mental strength. The bit that makes it extra special is that you do it in a 40 degree heated room!!! HOT. It means the the muscles are well warmed up before so helps prevent injury and enables you to stretch the muscles to there full range.

I also went swimming a few evenings as this is great for cardio, recovery and is a non impact exercise. I enjoy swimming a lot and when i was younger had a decision to either be a swimmer or tennis player. Thank god i am a tennis player as i think i would find purely doing lengths for hours on end at 5 am a real grind.

I have had a great week this week and am really looking forward to going out to the French Open tomorrow as i feel i am ready. I have been playing really well and have been training hard. I would just like to say a huge thank you to my support team of trainers and to everyone out there who has supported me. I have had a tough time at the beginning of this year on court but things are ready to change.

She's doing alot of hard work

5/06/2007 MELANIE SHOCKS TOP SEED AT SURBITON
From LTA website

British No.3 Mel South enjoyed her best result of the year when she beat world No.87 Alberta Brianti from Italy in the first round on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old from Surrey, ranked more than 100 places below Brianti, soon found her game to win 6-2, 6-4 on the grass of Surrey’s Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club.

The victory sets her up with a second round contest against Aussie Alison Bai, who put out Britain’s Anna Smith 6-7(3), 6-1, 7-6(4).

"After my win over Francesca Schiavone at Wimbledon I obviously love playing Italian girls on grass," joked South, who is coached by Lucie Ahl at the Win Tennis Academy at Bisham Abbey.

"I felt really good out there today and I was moving much better about the court and I was never really worried even when I was behind in the second set.

"I just became more aggressive and got back into it very quickly."

Melanie then paired up with partner Karen Paterson for their doubles match where they defeated Amanda Keen and Sarah Borwell 6-4 6-4 to move into the second round.

Melanie will be back on court tomorrow, second match after 11am.

From someone who wrote today on GB Tennis Girls after watching the match

'Mel played aggressive stuff, and was on top pretty much throughout. Brianti tried her best to disrupt her, holding up play and talking to herself but she held strong. There was no evidence of a difference in rankings - which is a great sign.'

What a day down at Surbiton! First up and Melanie lost such a tight match with Kops-Jones 5-7 5-7.

Last match on court to play the doubles semi final and Melanie and Karen took a long, hard fought three set match on a tie break to go through to the All Brit Final tomorrow.

Losing the first set 3-6, the pair went on to take the second set 6-1. Taking to the court for the third and final set and all the girls stepped up the game taking the match to a tie break where Mel and Karen won (4). They play Elena Baltacha and Naomi Cavaday who had a walk over into the final due to Rolle being injured and having conceded in her singles match.

Doubles Final is scheduled 4th match on court so fingers crossed their is no rain tomorrow as Melanie has to travel to Birmingham to play on Saturday!

Gosh, no rest then, good luck Mel/Karen and Mel in Birmingham :)

South thrilled by cup call-up
By Simon Fitzjohn

Federation Cup call: Melane South

Kingston tennis star Melanie South has vowed to impress after being named in Great Britain's squad for the Federation Cup ties in Hungary later this month.

It is the first time South has received such an honour, and the perfect tonic as she sets about getting her career back on track in 2008.

The south Londoner has watched enviously from the sidelines during Federation Cup campaigns in the past, and is eager to grab her chance.

South said: "I am very excited. When I got the call to say I was in the squad, I was extremely happy.

"The Federation Cup has always been a big deal for me and I was disappointed every time I wasn't selected.

"It is totally different to be in a team atmosphere and I'm really looking forward to helping British team spirit."

Britain will face a series of round-robin matches when the competition gets under way on January 28.

Britain face a difficult task in Budapest, as they will take on, among others, Serbia, which could see South meet world number six Ana Ivanovic.

But the 21-year-old Briton is convinced this is just the challenge she needs as she tries to muscle her way back into the world's top 200.

She added: "Last year, I had a really bad time and, to be honest, I was not in a good place mentally.

"I have taken some time over the winter to work on my fitness and I feel a lot better."

South also revealed she will continue to focus on her blossoming doubles career, which saw her achieve her most notable results in 2007, appearing in a number of ranking finals.

South added: "I really enjoy playing doubles and I have to admit I think I play it well.

"I didn't have a settled doubles partner all last season and it takes a while for a partnership to gel. I have been training with Anne Keothavong and it looks as though we'll team up, which will be great."

I think that another week in Japan is a bad idea. I think she should have gone to at least one clay court tournie because she's going to have a hard time adjusting to the french open clay. But well done for two 50k semis in a row. Just a year or two ago it was unheared for a bit to get to a 50k semi. Already this year Anne has won a clay 50k, Elena a 75k and now Mel 2 50k semis in a row.
