I really think Elke should give away her singles for now and concentrate on doubles cause if she does that she can play higher level events and I believe she has top 150 doubles ability perhaps even better if she really gives it a shot and I think she certaintly has the ability to play doubles at the grand slams. She can always go back to singles later if she wants, but it is holding back her doubles game. To play singles she has to play lower events but her doubles is good enough for better events. Hopefully she can continue her partnership with Kirsten and when Kirsten gets her singles ranking up to play higher eents (which I think she will) Elke will go to those events as well and play doubles. They ahve the ability together to be a great team and I think Elke is the better player of the two on the doubles court, Kirsten is ofcourse great as well:) I think there is no shame in being a doubles specialist, heck if I was good enough I would do it tomorrow, I really believe she has the ability to play at the slams in doubles and am getting annoyed with her singles game holding her doubles back by continuing to play 10K events. er doubles rank is 259 and is the thrid best Belgian, only Els and Kim are better if she focuses hard on doubles she can become a permanent part of the Belgian Fed Cup team and doubles combination, Kim isn't going to play much doubles any more and as much as we all want Els to play forever unfortuantely that won't happen so I think on the doubles court in the future Elke can be th enumber 1 Belgian. 259 is very high but I think it is being held back by her singles if she plays higher level events there are more points on offer and her rank will impove accordingly. What do you guys think about that?

Yeah Naomi, I think you're right about Elke's doubles skills, but I don't know if one can make a living as a 150th ranked doubles player? I'm not sure whether she's talented anough to become a top-30 doubles player.. And even then, one doesn't become a millionaire by reaching a 3nd round at a slam or a QF at a Tier III...

In my opinion, there are 3 young Belgian players who will retire at the end of the year if their ranking doesn't really improve : Elke Clijsters, Caroline Maes (I think I already said this) and Leslie Butkiewicz. They've been hanging around on the circuit for 3 or 4 years now and I don't see the point of continuing if they can't really break through this year.
Of course, Leslie and Elke could concentrate on doubles but as you said they have to be top 30 to make their living.

It also seems to me the belgian players are more team-players, if they have encouragement (fed-cup) or in doubles, they play much better. But in singles you are alone on the field, and suddenly the play of some belgian babes starts to go down :sad: It's great to be a teamplayer, but it should not stand in the way of singled.:sad:
