Very good chance to get a WC at St. Petersburgh. A Main Draw-WC sounds fair, she needs to gain some experience and having a 50K. under her belt.

Regina into semis. If she continues her recent progress, we'll have an all Russian final. In her hometown tournament St. Petersburg , can't see why she would be left out to get a WC as a local player.

not sure a WC would be a good idea for Regina there.
switching from clay to indoor hard, plus a long long journey with only NO rest at all.

Regina hopefully can make the final :)
best luck in semis tomorrow :)

I watched a bit of this match and, boy, was I impressed with Regina. Given her opponenet was the one who was happy taking a game here or there, but Regina made her look even more junior. Regina hits so flat and so powerful off both sides!. OMG! Now I'm not surprised that she went 3 sets with Michaela.

Good luck Regina for the rest of the tournament!

TheBoiledEgg
Sep 6th, 2004, 05:18 PM
Thanx for the details ;)
not seen Regina play yet, but she looks very promising
flat both sides :yeah:
how was her serve is the important Q ?

vaiva
Sep 6th, 2004, 05:25 PM
Is she a typical hard-hitting baseliner like most of the young girls? Similar to Vaisidova or Karatancheva?

tenn_ace
Sep 6th, 2004, 05:41 PM
I haven't watched a lot of her match (was at Misha's match trying to support him), but her srving is good. It's not great, but she is a tall girl and definitely could develop it further.

It's a topspin serve, so not very fast but with a nice kick (sorta like Mauresmo). Second serve is visibly slower, but Regina mixes it a lot better than Alisa Kleybanova.

vaiva, she is one of those hard hitting girls. I think I know why you are asking. I do hope too that Regina works on her variey. But in her first round match, she completely overpowered her opponent.

btw, another thing I was impressed with is her returns. She goes on offensive right away. In that second set that I saw, her opponent could barely win a point (even on her own serve).

Regina would already be much higher if she didnt have alot of probs with injuries
this yr has been pretty bad for her in that way, missed quite a bit of it

Yes, you are completely right, this year was so difficult for her because she changed coach (Floriano Salvoni), came in Italy in January (do you know she practiced 8 months with Shamayko?) but because of injuries (and her coach strange decision to don't let her play untill august) she couldn't play at her best.
It must be considered that in Italy, where she played all her tournaments (10Ks) this year, the competition is higher than for example in Japan where her "friend" Kleybanova won 25k easily, even because clay is not the surface where Regina's game is best.
On fast surfaces she is yet a top 100 player, no doubt about it!!!
Probably very few people know that this summer in practice with russian team under 16 (european summer cup) Regina won easily against Kleybanova and Rodina, but she played maybe 2 matches because the team coach was Rodina's mother so.... russia lost the final against poland where Kleybanova and Rodina were preferred to Regina! Nice choice!!!

Yesterday evening Regina arrived in Ortisei with her coach Floriano Salvoni and part of his team, the young and promising Polona Hercog (SLO) and Cristina Celani (ITA).
The QUEEN (Regina in italian means queen) had a little practice as soon as she arrived but unfortunately she doesn't like so much the court...too slow, she prefers Play-it! :wavey:

she's very good, also very young.

Yes Polona turned 15 just 8 days ago and she is yet very tall, probably in a few years she will become taller than Regina (1.83 m)!

This morning Regina had practice with Ani Maret, she felt the ball good...she is getting soon used to this sufrace!

At 6 this afternoon back on court!

Regina is going to change her racquet!
She will "hang at the wall" the old Head Liquidmetal Radical MP and she will probably use the new Head Flexpoint Instinct:

Beam: 23/25/21 mm
Head size: 645 cm²
Weight: 295 g
Balance: 320 mm
Length: Standard, 685 mm
Gripsize: 1-5
String Pattern: 18/19
Swingstyle: L3

Yesterday she used it for the first time in practice, won 6-2 against her sparring!!! She is delighted with this new model!!!

I was looking again at the photo i attached in the previous post and i forgot to specify that the racquet Regina was playng with is not her racquet but Polona Hercog's one, actually they have the same head coach and practice together.

As for Polona she played in Cairo qualifying draw, she won the first match 6-0 6-0 over Fatma El Kashef but lost the second to Vanesa Furlanetto (9) 4-6 6-4 6-3. Anyway it was a good performance because in the last round Furlanetto defeated Biljana Pavlova (number 1 seeded) 6-4 6-1 and we have to remark that it's the first 10,000$ of the season for her at just 15 years old!
She will continue to play in Egypt for the next two tournaments and i hope she will reach the main draw in both of them. :wavey:

Regina lost today 2-6 3-6 in more than 2 hours! It was a match in wich almost every game went to deuce but at the end Cornet was able to get the most important points!
Anyway i spoke with Regi and she described the match, she was so angry with her opponent because at the beginning of the match Regi went ahead 2-0 with possibility to go 3-0 but then Cornet after breaking her racquet, called the injury time (nearly 15 minutes) and she was near to retire so that even the refree told to Regi that the match was essentially over. She was screaming loud because she said that her knee was broken but...it was all ok as you can see by the result! It was special to make Regina loose her great initial concentration and break her rythm! What can i say, it's not a sporting behaviour but at least it brought a win for her!
Regina don't worry, just a little bit of experience is needed because everyone said that you play much more better than Cornet.

It was anyway a good tournament for Regi with 4 matches won and 8.5 points gained that means she will be around 400!
Davai keep going and look forward for the next week tournament in Campobasso!

Good and bad news for Regina. As Qual first seed won first set 6-4 and then something we are familiar with retired but is in Main Draw as LL. Hopefully she retired cause of not aggravating her injury. Hope she's fine.
