View Full Version : Wednesday @ IW

Mar 11th, 2004, 07:21 AM
I flew low at about 90 mph to get to IW just in time for the All Access Hour at noon. They had it over in this restaurant on site called the Garden Club. We got there and waited a few minutes (of course!) and then a bunch of players came in. Myskina, Zvonareva, Dokic, Kuznetsova, Suarez (she's a top 8 seed here...how weird is that?) and Petrova. I was like, um, where are the top players?? Turns out they were doing TV interviews outside, so pretty soon Kim C., Justine and Lindsay all come in as well. Can't really say as to what they were talking about....I just floated around taking pics. My man, Ed, from OTL interviewed most of them.

Paolo Suarez was delightful....really came across nice.

Kuznetsova looks much prettier off court in casual clothes.

Dokic varied between bored and annoyed the first few minutes, but when the TV camera turned on for a Tennis Channel spot, she perked right up!

Poor Vera Z. had no one at her table at the beginning, but they started crowding around her table after a while.

Nadia Petrova seemed to give a lot of one-on-one interviews. Very polite.

Justine came in and was swamped. Ed and I agreed she has been coached well on handling the press better than she did say a year ago. She handled herself well.

Kim held court at another table. She was very animated in her responses and quite cheerful (I know, what a surprise!)

Lindsay is just Lindsay. Comfortable, joking a bit, giving well thought out answers. At one point she had Matt Cronin on one side and Jon Wertheim on the other. The poor dear ;) She handled it just fine though. She looks great.

After the AA hour, I made the rounds on the practice courts. Dani was out hitting with Myskina. She looks much healthier, IMO. Nigel was there with her.

Also out on the courts were Conchita Martinez and Maria Vento-Kabchi
Anne Kremer (Welcome back!),
Els Callens, Jennifer Hopkins, K-Lina
and Talaja, Tarabini and Dragomir, Vera Z and Meghann Shaughnessy,
Tim Henman and Todd Martin, Taylor Dent, Sebastian Grosjean and Arazi, Roger Federer, James Blake and Dominic Hrbaty.

A particular wonderful court featured Nicolas Lapentti, Robbie Ginepri, Gaston Gaudio and Thomas Enqvist (all but Thomas shirtless). Oh my. Did I mention they were sweaty?

Around the dining room I saw Carlos Moya, Gaston Gaudio, Canas, Tarabini, Dragomir and her ADORABLE son, Wayne Ferreira, Anne Kremer, Chladkova (STILL with the ugly hair), Petrova, Shiavone, Obata, Maggie Maleeva, Tommy Haas (Rowr!), Karlovic (TALL dude) and Paradorn.

Dragomir's son seems to be the new mascot of the WTA. Practically every player who passed by had to stop and play with him.

I'll post more tomorrow if I can remember more. I only saw a bit of the Golovin-Asagoe match, so I can't help much on match reports. I'll be more into the swing of things when I go back on Friday.

Nice pics and report do you have a pic of Todd Reid or Alicia Molik

Mar 11th, 2004, 03:48 PM
Today three of Charlie’s kiddies came through with upset wins. 14-year-old Bulgarian and Bollettieri student Sesil Karatancheva took out slip-sliding-away Alexandra Stevenson, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1; American-based Russian Alisa Kleibanova, an unranked 14-year-old-year-old, shocked Jelena Kostanic, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5; and 15-year-old Tatiana Golovin disposed of Japanese veteran Shinobu Asagoe in our featured match.

Alisa is ranked :o and Asagoe isnt a vetran ;)

Mar 11th, 2004, 03:49 PM
And what about Sesil’s next opponent, Spanish veteran Magui Serna? “I don’t know who this is,” was the surprising reply. “I don’t really care.”

Also Magui aint a Vetran either ;)

Mar 11th, 2004, 04:01 PM

vet-er-an n. One of long experience in a given activity or capacity.

Serna turned pro in 1996 (eight years)
Asagoe turned pro in 1997 (seven years)

Sounds like veterans to me.

Sorry, haven't seen Todd Reid or Alicia Molik yet. I'll look for them this weekend.

Doris, I couldn't get close enough to the court to get a shot of Roger yesterday. Big crowds for your boy! I'll get him later :)

"Poor Vera Z. had no one at her table at the beginning, but they started crowding around her table after a while"
I'd have sat at the base of Her table gazing up lovingly and wagging My tail now and then :worship:

Mar 12th, 2004, 03:30 PM
Wait, Tim Henman with Lotto not Adidas?!
That's Hrbaty, no?

Great Pics Traci :)

Mar 12th, 2004, 03:45 PM
Yeah, that is Hrbaty with James Blake. Henman is still in Adidas.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. My first gallery at OTL ( www.tennis-ontheline.com (http://www.tennis-ontheline.com/) )should be up sometime today. There are more photos from the All Access and a few more around the grounds. I'm off to IW again for the weekend and will have more stuff for you guys tonight or tomorrow.

p.s. Experimentee - Hrbaty looked pretty healthy to me. He practiced for a long time with James, so I think he is well.
