Martina was #1 til some time in October or November.
Then Jenn, Then Lindsay, then Jenn again, now Venus.
Then when Venus's Miami and Indian Wells points drop off it'llprobably be Jenn again, til her next points drop off. And remember, Martina defens the big 2 points at WB. So Venus RG flame-out last year gives no advantage over Martina.
And what if Serena, Kim and Justine win the next three GS tournaments. Things would be a big mess then. :)

...and Monica defends the big -0- at Roland Garros and the bigger -0- at Wimbledon...

We could be in for a record number of swaps at the top. And if anyone other than those 4 grabs a slam, they could jump into it.
In the years of dominant #1's, the top player typically had over 6000 points. Late last year, we had 4 with 4000+, but none over 5000. That shows how bunched up it is.

I think its great to have such a dead heat race for #1.

..If Martina could pull FO out the magician's hat for example, then do something big (sf) at Wimbledon she could be in with a shot (all you computators out there)....
How's about Kim? Not really sure what she'd have to do (and when she'd have to do it). She has a few finals spread throughout the year (IW, FO etc.) so I don't know about that.
For the moment though it looks like the Venus & Jen Show.

This is a tough race!
It is impossible to predict the year and rankings right now.
It is apparent the tour has become so much more competitive :D

and wasn't kim like just 2 matches away from the number one ranking!
if she had beaten jen in the semis and then martina in the final then kim would have been number one!!!
i think venus will end the year number one but 2-5 and maybe even 2-7 is up in the air!

Wally, one way of looking at it is that Kim missed the #1 ranking by 2 points. She was two points from winning Roland Garros, which would have made her #1 after OZ, instead of Jen.
