BTW, did anyone hear what Bepa said a few games ago?

It was something like " I can feel the..." :scared:
She said "I feel the shot, but I can't hit it!"

The reaction is comprehensible for me:sad: . There was a chance to win. But maybe next time.
I agree. You could see tears at the ready 2 or 3 times during the match, But Vera did a great job of controlling her emotions on the court.

Vera played a tremendous match, and it's clear that if she'd taken the 2nd set, she could have won that match. If she had been able to play New Haven, I think she would have sailed into the QF at the Open.

Be proud, Bepa!! :smooch:

Vera had a back injury and withdrew from doubles. She needs to rest and get healthy.
At least her wrist held up. Vera has a lot of game. If she could stay healthy for 12 months, she would be back in the top 10

Ok, here are some reports from the US Open ;)

Vera d. Jidkova 60 67(5) 60
You probably can imagine how nervous I was before the match, I didnt know what to expect. Then the players came out and I saw that Vera was hitting the backhand just like she always did... and without any tapes. She was hitting so well, it was amazing. There was nothing Alina could do until 60 20 for Vera with Vera serving. That was a very long game and Alina had several chances to break which she didnt convert (after which she always would insult her coach) und Vera played smart to go uo 60 30. I dont know why, but in the next service game Vera started going for too much and tried to hit winners when she was in no position to do so. And then she started to became tight. It was 55 and Vera was in her mood that makes us all scared at times. In the TB many errors from Vera so we had a third set and I didnt know what to expect again. However, after a toilet break, Vera came back calm and focused and finished the job just like she has done in the first set. I was relieved... although you couldnt definitely see the lack of match play in the second set.

Vera d. Likhovtseva 64 62
It was already dawning when they both came onto the court and I sat near Vera's coach Sam. In the first couple of games Vera was not playing well, her serve didnt work and she was frustrated and already fed up with everything. Then Vera could finally break after a couple of really tight games she felt a bit better and started playing more aggressive, going for her shots and won the first set 64 after a little choke in the end (had 4 SPs on Elenas serve at 5-3*). The second set was easier, she played well. Not as well as she played at the beginning of the year, but it was decent. Good match by Vera and Sam was also pleased. I was looking forward to her match against Serena.
http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m117/rrfnpump/2007%20US%20Open/Day%2003%20Wednesday/th_IMG_918.jpg (http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m117/rrfnpump/2007%20US%20Open/Day%2003%20Wednesday/IMG_918.jpg) http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m117/rrfnpump/2007%20US%20Open/Day%2003%20Wednesday/th_IMG_919.jpg (http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m117/rrfnpump/2007%20US%20Open/Day%2003%20Wednesday/IMG_919.jpg) http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m117/rrfnpump/2007%20US%20Open/Day%2003%20Wednesday/th_IMG_920.jpg (http://s102.photobucket.com/albums/m117/rrfnpump/2007%20US%20Open/Day%2003%20Wednesday/IMG_920.jpg)

Vera l. to Serena 46 67(4)
Didnt saw the match live, but on TV and I thought this match showed the lack of match play Vera has. She didnt play as well as in the previous rounds, couldnt take her chances and didnt make the points that mattered. Serena was not at her best, Vera could have won this match, but it was ok as it is. This tournament was far better than I would have expected and I was happy with her performance. Hopefully, she can be injury-free for some time now and fulfill her potential again. I think she is a much better player than Chakvetadze and Anna is #5 now...

Practice
I saw Vera practicing a couple of times. She and Sam especially tried to improve the serve. In her session with Wozniacki Vera was mostly serving, but she wasnt pleased with it and was arguing with Sam. She didnt practice a lot of backhand shots, I hope this doesnt mean it is not at 100% now. After the practice she was in a heated discussion with Sam, but I still decided to ask her for a picture and she said yes and was smiling. She is such a nice girl when she is not on a tennis court.

The dinner was great but I have to say the most interesting part of the night was the cocktail competition. They brought in the Slovenian bartending champion, and he demonstrated a mojito, and he was throwing the bottles up in the air, just like in the movie... then it was our turn! They picked four of us: me, Golovin, Bammer and Zvonareva - and we had to go up, learn a little bit about how to mix drinks, and then make our own! They gave us five minutes and then would pick the winner based on whose drink was the best. Golovin and Bammer went first and Golovin won that one. And then Zvonareva and me had to go - they gave us both 5/5 and because it was a tie we had to answer a question. I don't remember for sure but I think they asked what the national drink of Cuba was. I had no idea and Zvonareva got it right so she won [...] In the end Golovin ended up winning

Hopefully, Vera can beat Tati then on the court. :D

Is she having problems with asthma again? What kind of weather in Portoroz?
Looking at the stats, it seemed she went to sleep, but you can't do much if you're having a hard time breathing.

Dechy definitely raised her play. I had the impression Vera was just concentrating more on getting her 1st serves in in that last set, because the rest of her stats didn't improve along with it.

Whatever was going on, she made it through. :p

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the long pause in my diary, i could to enter to the internet only for 10 minutes, and I had time only for look my e-mail. Many things has occurred for last 4-5 weeks! But the most important, I could return on the court after my injury... In the morning when I should return on court in New York to play the the first match against Alina Zhidkova I doubted, that I will play... But we together with my coach and physio have made a decision to play... It was not easy, the first match for 4 months and at once on US Open… I didn\\\\`t know that wait of myself… But I tried to wrestle, not looking at the score… The match was very unequal but I could win it. After that I have felt again that I again on the tournament and again I could take part on the competitions. Next it was slowly, usual tennis days and the matches… Certainly, I need to watch over my hand, I till now cannot train every day, but to hurry up while is not necessary...
Now I am in Portozh, has won the first 2 matches, I will play soon against Verochka Dushevina. I think, it will be a good match, but here is very windy, and I don’t know that to expect. The day before yesterday here were 2 storm, I know, that 4 persons died and 2 gone... Can be tomorrow there will be a day of mourning in Slovenia and all sports events can be cancelled... While i dont know... But I hope, will find the gone children... In general, I here in Slovenia was several years ago when we here played Fed Cup. It’s very beautiful place and tennis club is on the seaside.
I forgotten I CONGRATULATE ALL WITH THE VICTORY THE FEDCUP!!! GIRLS IS GOOD FELLOWS !!! ! I am very glad for our country and girls. On weekend I also fan for our teams on the European Champinships…. Very glad for a basketball team, I CONGRATULATE THEM TOO! It is a pity, that volleyball players have lost (beautiful game was), but they too can be congratulated on 2-nd place, not each country to reach to the final.
So I haven’t more news,
See you,
Vera

BEPA def. Goerges 6(4)-7, 6-4, 6-2! :smooch: :bounce:

But she made it as difficult as possible. 1 hr 56 min. breakfest, overall 1st serve % 44%. In the 3rd set, at the end of each service game, Vera's 1st serve % was 13%, 22%, 18%, 27%. But the final game was served out with just 5 points. It really should have been a straight sets win, as Vera was up 3-0 & 5-3 in the 1st set.

Vera can take her. And I'd give her a fighting chance against Peer. Wow, that'd be a really great match! I hope it's on TV.Not unless she cleans up that serve. Did anyone see that match? I'd like to know what was going on there, hopefully just a bad day.

Azarenka just thrashed Nadia which means she must be in a pretty good shape. Vera needs to play smart tennis, playing some moonballs, some dropshots, get her out of rythmn.

I think its 50/50 on who will win.

I think its 50/50 on who will win.2 & 1 over Petrova. Azarenka could be quite a handful for Bepa. She's a tough little fighter, so it could be a battle of the wills. She has a temper too, so Bepa needs to keep total control over her own. Vera should win this, but Vika's stats against Nadia are pretty good. 5 aces & 1 DF, 95% of 1st serve pts won (54% in). 5/11 BPs won, and no BPs against her. Did Nadia take the day off?

Bepa will need to step it up like she did in the 2nd set today.

Stefi62 was posting live from the match:

Live from Zvonie-Peer. The match started with good things from both players, but now, it seems that Shahar could raise her level, while Zvonie makes small mistakes and is mad at herself and poor Marianna Alves! It's 5*-4 for Shahar in first et now.

Back on Vera-Shahar match. Now it's Peer-Zonareva 6-4 / 1-6 / 4-3* 00-15*

era played really well in the second set. I left at 4-1*, but from what I hae seen, she really deserved it. she could vary from short to long balls, dropshots to passings... Now it seems closer. That game is important, because if she looses it, Vera may start doubting again and showing it, as she always does.... attitude is important, and Vera cannot keep her nerves. Now 40*-30. She should win it, and then equality again! Done, game!

I've switched before to the doubles match. Tati and Dechy were leading 4-1 and then lost the set 4-6. I think that if they had play more seriously, they would have won it, but Chan and Shaughnessy could do what was necessary to win it in the end. I don't know what the score is now, maybe another Super Tie Break? I've seen four here so far, and that's funny cos people don't know when it ends!!! I want to yell "it's to ten, dudes!" but finally i don't and leave them in their doubt!

Peer-Zvonareva 4-4, 15*-15
Second serve for Shahar. Double fault! so 15*-30
Maybe Zvonie's chance? Can she take it?
Long point, driven by zvonie, who can conclude it, thanks to a forced error of Shahar. 15*-40
Length of the ball gets shorter from Shahar, and she is punished immediatly by great backhands by Zvonie. Break for Zvonie, who'll serve for the match.
Lots of people are arriving from the doubles match, so I figure the Frenchies lost in two sets?

The umpire announces "time". Zvonie will serve;

First serve too long. Second serve on the line, Shahar could not return, 15*-00 for Zvonie
Let. First serve. After two or three exchanges, Shahar makes an unforced error and the ball goes out 30*-00
Second serve. Zvonie's ball goes out. 30*-15
Second serve. DF 30*-30
Can she hold her nerves? We'll see....
Another serve out, second serve now. Shahar leads the points, but her ball gets shorter, and Zonie takes her chance on the long line. Match point #1 40*-30
Second serve, ball is out by Shahar. GSM Zvonie! Astonishing, but from what I've seen, that is deserved. No offense to Shahar's fans, I am neutral here, but Zvonie could come back and prove strong, well done!

On the bottom half of the draw, Vera Zvonareva continued her strong comeback to the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, having sat out over four months with a left wrist injury. She won two matches at the US Open, two more last week in Portoroz and has now claimed three matches in a row here in Luxembourg, her latest victim coming earlier on Friday in the form of Victoria Azarenka. After blitzing through the first set in 22 minutes and going ahead 4-2 in the second, Zvonareva allowed an aggressive Azarenka back into the match, even double-faulting to bring up a set point serving at 5-6. But she got out of that and rallied back from 4-2 down in the tie-break to pull off a 61 76(5) victory.

"I played a very good first set but in the second set she really raised her level," Zvonareva said. "She is a very good player and we had a tough battle. I think I played the tie-break better than her. I am happy with how I played, but maybe I should have come up to the net a bit more."

Zvonareva's last semifinal came in early April at Charleston, where she cruised into the semis without the loss of a set before retirning against Dinara Safina due to the injury. She subsequently pulled out of every event until the US Open.

"It's only my third tournament back and I am really pleased to be in the semis," the Russian added. "I have nothing to lose, just go out there and play my best."

BEPA!! :sobbing:  :smooch: :bigcry: What happened to you?

About 4-4 in the 1st set, I noticed tears starting. She was playing excellently at the time, had sth like 97% 1st serve pts. Only 1 df in 1st set. But she sort of collapsed with that last game.

Neither player had tremendous 1st serve % advantage: 66% VZ to 60% AI in 1st set, 34% to 36% in 2nd set. But Vera's 2nd serve pts in 1st set cost her dearly. Maybe that was the source of her emotional distress? Her serve seemed to just fall apart in the 2nd set. My live feed kept dying, so I couldn't see all of it. Was she having any physical problems?

After yesterday's match, it looked like she was ready to roll. Altho Vika is not quite up to Ana's level.

Vera lost to a good player, like in NY. She's not a top 5 player. If Vera stays healthy, I can think she has a chance to get back into the top 10.
To be top 5, she has to improve her serve and make fewer errors.

I thought the key point was at 46 23 40-30. Vera missed an easy volley. Then lost the next 2 points on bad UE's. And that was the match.

Vera's defending 75 pts. She's got to win one more round for a net gain. Alona Bondarenko was close on her heels, but she lost in 1R and dropped back not quite 5 points. Kirilenko was also close, but she lost her 1R match, no pts to defend. Azarenka is probably the only threat to Vera in terms of rank, and she would have to make the Finals to pass her, but I don't see that happening. :tape:

Vera played very good from the baseline, had some nice angles and a great shot selection. However, her serve seems to be still a mess, 50% first serves only, no aces. Its supposed to be her best shot (at least Vera said so :o).

She has to serve better in the next match, hopefully against Chakvetadze, her H2H against Safina doesnt seem to promising.

Kuznetsova breezes past Zvonareva in straight sets

AP, MOSCOW
Saturday, Oct 13, 2007, Page 20

Top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 6-2 yesterday to advance to the semi-finals of the Kremlin Cup.
Also, Elena Dementieva of Russia beat Belarusian teenager Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (4), 6-2 to reach her fifth straight semi-final at the Moscow tournament. She will next play Dinara Safina, who eliminated Vera Zvonareva 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
In the men's tournament, Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia beat Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and fourth-seeded Paul-Henri Mathieu eliminated Florent Serra 6-3, 6-3 in an all-French quarter-final.
Kuznetsova, the 2004 US Open champion, won the first set in 31 minutes and sealed the victory with an overhead smash.
In her 10th semi-final of the year, the No. 2-ranked Kuznetsova will play Serena Williams or Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic, who played in a later quarter-final. Williams, an eight-time Grand Slam champion, is playing in Moscow for the first time in a decade. In 1997, the 16-year-old Williams qualified and lost in the first round when

New diary entry from Vera.

Hi everyone, hope all is well with u!
Well, I had a busy schedule last few weeks and didnt really get the chance to spend some time at home...During the Kremlin Cup I had to stay at the hotel, because of the Moscow traffic...But I enjoyed that tournament anyways! Its always nice to play at home, even though I didnt like the surface there at all :) It was really weird, but it is the same for everybody, so we all had to try our best no matter what :)
I just wanted to comment on my match against Dinara and why I didnt shake her hand. First of all I wasnt mad or anything like that and I think Dinara is very nice person. But I think its very unprofessional the way she acts toward her opponent during the matches. There is an etiquette between us, players, which may not be that noticible to the public. And I think Dinara didnt act right (and it wasnt a first time). You have to support yourself during the match (everyone does), but the question is how you do it....U can get mad, upset or happy, but you dont do it towards your opponents face. I think beauty of the game is not about who is going to scream c\\`mon louder - is about playing your best on the court. I think Dinara didnt respect me as an opponent yesterday, so I didnt see the reason to shake her hand.
But Im in Zurich now, getting ready for the next tournament,
Talk to you soon,
Vera

There are two things that are bothering me at the moment. The first is Vera's serve, it doesnt seem to work any more, she consistantly has only about 50% first serves in play and she hardly hits any ACE. She is struggling with it, and without a good serve she wont have a chance tomorrow. The second thing is her poor break point conversion rate, she wastes them too often. She has to use her chances tomorrow, otherwise :help:

0-4 against Henin so far, no sets won. I don't think this will change at all. But I hope Vera can perform well and play without pressure.

Good luck, Vera :) ;)

Janette made the USO final with Lena D.

Which reminds me, both Vera and Dinara won the USO with Dechy. Maybe that's why Vera's mad at Dinara.

Well done Vera :yeah: :D :rocker2: Mission accomplished :D Now do your best against Justine  Like Basti,I don't expect Vera to win or even take a set to Justine but I hope I'm wrong :) Justine said some years ago that she believed Vera was the most talented Russian,so I don't think she will underestimate Vera. Davai Bepa!! :rocker2:
Oh btw,I don't think Bepa is jealous or mad at Dinara because she stole her double partner.:p

Vera/Janette lost 62 62. :o

Did Vera forget how to play doubles? Some of her losses are shocking, at least the scoreline. She can play such a good doubles, see Wimbledon mixed.

Vera has done awful in doubles this year. I think she's concentrating on singles.
At the majors, she should focus more on doubles.

Bepa's serve is :help:. Why didn't she work on it while she was injured?

The scoreline in doubles = :o

Nevertheless, I expect Bepa to down Justine in straight sets

A good comeback, Bepa! :smooch:

It would be great if Vera could take out Justine. I think she could do it if she jumped on her immediately. Important thing here is she made it to 2R, which is worth 60 points, and adds a 17th tournament to her collection. If she can add one more 2R (minimum) tournament, she can eliminate one of those 1-point tourneys holding down her ranking.

What were they doing in that 1st set? 83 pts?

Janette made the USO final with Lena D.

Which reminds me, both Vera and Dinara won the USO with Dechy. Maybe that's why Vera's mad at Dinara.I wouldn't think Vera would be mad about that, because she probably wasn't able to assure Dechy that she would be playing USO. I'll take Vera's statement about why she didn't shake Safina's hand at face value, tho' I really have no idea what she's referring to.

GOOD LUCK AGAINST HENIN, BEPA!! Take her down quickly and in straights! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

It was a tough order against #1. But she made it a good fight. A 12-minute game at 3-4. In the 1st set, Justine only won 3 more points on serve than Vera, but she dominated on the returns. Vera's game fell down in the 2nd set. I hope her wrist isn't bothering her. Only 2 DFs in the match, but we have no UE/Winner stats, so hard to say what went on, just that Justine took over.

Yes, she is a tough little shit to take on that Juju, Bepa put up a good scrap in the first, but hoped she would improve in the second, still I suppose she was trying her best! Did the Bepa offer up a handshake? she might have got mad because Juju yelled out "Allez" when she made a cock up :)

Not a good scoreline, but she did what she had to do here in Zürich. Winning one match was good. This was her last tournament of 2007 as she withdrew from Linz today.

Have a nice rest in the break, Vera  :)
give the wrist some rest again and practice on your serve

2008 will be good. :D

EDIT : Just saw she comitted to Quebec.
Is it because she will stay at Florida during the break?

:( She has 49 pts to defend at Linz. She really needs both tournaments to move up, unless she just decides to win Quebec.

I'm guessing her wrist is the culprit, considering the way the 2nd set against Henin came apart. She must have decided it needs a rest. I hope I'm wrong.

Rehab that wrist, and tear 'em apart in Quebec, Bepa! :bounce:

withdrew from Linz ? if only for rest

but wy was needed to enter Quebec? only to defend points form Linz and Hasselt ( SF? ) last year? Or she wants to have a title this year?

Vera indeed plays Quebec. Has a nice draw, first round Castano. :)

She should easily make the semis and will play Davenport then. If Vera's serve finally starts working again she has a chance to win the title. Its between her, Davenport and Vaidisova.

Good luck, Vera :)

Vera plays doubles with Tu this week and they are the first seeds :p I would have prefered her to play doubles with Harkleroad like at the US Open or with another Russian but oh,well :p

Here is the draw:

1) Melien Tu (USA)/Vera Zvonareva (RUS) Vs Sofia Arvidsson (SWE)/Angela Haynes (USA)
Jorgelina Cravero (ARG)/Yuliana Fedak (UKR) Vs Maria-Fernanda Alves (BRA) /Betina Jozami (ARG)
(4) Ashley Harkleroad (USA)/Julie Ditty (USA) Vs Christina Fusano (USA)/Raquel Kops-Jones (USA)
Ekaterina Shuleava (CAN)/Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN) Vs Eva Hrdinova (CZE)/Maria-Eve Pelletier (CAN)

Alina Jidkova (RUS)/Yaroslava Shvedova (RUS) Vs Stephanie Foretz (FRA)/Anne Kremer (LUX)
(3) Stephanie Dubios (CAN)/Reneta Voracova (CZE) Vs Catalina Castano (COL)/Abigail Spears (USA)
Sunitha Rao (IND)/Christina Wheeler (AUS) Vs Maret Ani (EST)/Andrea Klepac (SLO)
(2) Jill Craybas (USA)/Severine Bremond (FRA) Vs Angelika Bachmann (GER)/Liga Dekmejerie (LAT)

The draw isn't that strong so let's hope Vera/Tu manage to take the title :bounce: :bounce:
