Unless Vera plays better, I'm not sure she can get any of them as partners.
That whole group - Sveta, Nadia, Maria K., and Dinara -
are all ranked way above Vera.Masha is ranked 7 places above Bepa, so I'd hardly call that "way above". What's more, she beat the stuffing out of her when they met in Auckland. Bepa has had one great tournament and two poor tournaments this year. If she can remain focused like she was in Auckland, she'll get her season back on track.

Secondly, I don't buy the argument that they won't partner her because she isn't playing well. She is the #2 ranked Russian doubles player, and I don't see a real link between her form in singles and doubles. If anything, she performs slightly better in doubles when she has flamed out of the tournament in singles

But all these #'s don't mean anything when Vera is getting no results.

I don't call reaching the Auckland singles-final, winning the doubles-title there, or her two quarter-finals at the Australian Open 2006, "getting no results".

A lot of top-20 players would be honoured to partner Bepa in doubles.

Of the partners suggested above, Maria Kirilenko would be the most attractive choice, although they haven't played well together in the past, and Little Maria seems to be quite happy in Team Dulkirilenko at the moment. :)

My ultimate all-Russian doubles-match would be the Super Maria Sisters against Bepa and Anna Chakvetadze, although the court might tend to get rather damp at one end! ;)

SO to speak abt possiable partnership in 2006

I think notearly then middle of 2007

And look at Sveta/Lena - they have played together with very good results special for Olimpics
They were 1 st seeded team - and we all knew what's happend in Greece

For this moment i think Lena/Vera is a good team

I already see Vera vs Li Na in first round :o

seriously, Vera needs some luck in the draws
if she had had Ruano Pascuals draw at the Ao she would have made it into 4th round for sure. she was just unlucky.

Bepa beat Suárez 6-2 6-3 in her first match of the year, at Auckland, but I'm a bit worried about Bammer in the second round. Philadelphia 2004 was perhaps the best tournament of Bepa's career so far - but only after saving match-point against Bammer in the first round! :scared:

I think Bepa will bounce back this week :bounce:

She shouldn't take her draw for granted, but she has the game to dismantle the field

Also, given the way that Martina has been playing, maybe it will help to lessen the effects of her AO loss (although I still think that Bepa really underperformed  )

PATTAYA, Thailand (AP) -- Former world number one doubles player Paola Suarez of Argentina dismissed top-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva 6-1 6-3 in just 68 minutes in the first round of the Pattaya Women's Open at the Dusit Resort Hotel in Thailand.

The Argentine veteran, who topped the doubles ranking in 2002 and reached her highest singles ranking of nine in 2004, avenged a loss to the world No 33 Russian in the first round of the ASB Women's Classic in Auckland last month.

Suarez, who was hampered by injuries throughout much of last year, performed consistently from the baseline.

Zvonareva was error-prone and became so rattled as to throw down her racket in frustration.

"I served well in the first set but the second set was a bit tough because I couldn't get my serves in and she broke me twice.

" But she didn't play well today.":( said Suarez, now ranked 319th in the world.

She said the match was her second since a hip operation, and she was working at getting her playing rhythm back.

Suarez admitted she was distracted by the antics of Rodionova on an adjacent court, as the Russian became almost hysterical:banghead: at times, constantly disputing calls, walking to her chair and twice refusing to play on until the referee was called to the court.

"It was a little bit difficult to play like this, with so much screaming and shouting," said Suarez.

"I tried to be focused but it was difficult, you know."

Shes going through such a rough patch, im sure the last thing she needs to hear is how pathetic she is!!

Sure, im annoyed with how shes playing, shes playing awful tennis, but as i posted earlier, she needs her fans now!! Not abuse!!

Its obvious to anyone that Vera is seriously struggling but as fans, we gotta stand firm by her and we gotta be their to support her, this is a tough time, if your a real fan, then stand up and give her support, not tell her how pathetic she is!!

I truly believe that Vera is a fantastically talented tennis player and i truly believe she can regain the form that got her to top 10 in the world but if she was to read this forum, she'd think you lot hated her!! Its quite clear that Vera has some serious issues, this isnt just a loss of form, shes clearly struggling with herself, and this is the time that we gotta be their for her, now give her a break from the abuse you lot seem to be dishing her and offer her some support!!

totally agreed.
she needs all the support she can get at the moment - more than ever - and the last thing she needs is to hear how pathetic she is. It´s for sure that She´s feeling worse about her game then everyone else and it´s essential to see that there are fans that still believe in her - cause I guess there are just very few people that would be able to get back without support.

I´m feeling terrible about such losses myself, of course, but nevertheless I still believe that "the other Vera" can and will come back and prove all wrong who already gave her up.

You are maybe right, but her performance yesterday WAS far beyond pathetic. Its not an opinion, but its a fact. Losing to a player she beat comfortable a month ago and only getting 4 games is :help:

We will all continue to support Vera - she is my No1 fave and she always will. But being a fan of somebody means also criticizing and sometimes bashing him/her. Vera also doesnt need fans who always say "next time", but she needs critical fans who give her suggestions and stuff.

And she needs to change sth. Waiting till something happenes is useless. Her last three losses were 26 26, 16 26, 16 36 ; thats a total of 11 games won in three matches.

Nothing wrong with constructive criticism but bashing is uncalled for. Save that for players u hate not for one of ur favs. We all want Vera to succeed. So far her year is following last years pattern with ups and downs. So criticize, critique but don't bash it's not necessary.

From the tournament website (http://www.pentanglepromotions.com/pattaya06/newstue.htm)
Top seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva joined second seed Shinobu Asagoe as a first round loser when she was humbled 6-1 6-3 by Paola Suarez. The Argentine, who is better known for the doubles skills that took her to number one in the world, has only recently returned to the tour after she missed the second half of last season because of a hip injury that required surgery.

But she was always in charge against her emotional opponent, who was almost in tears at times. Once ranked in the top 10 but now at 30, Zvonareva struggled to maintain the rallies, hit 12 doubles faults, and failed to hold serve until she was down 5-2 in the second set. Suarez took full advantage, striking the ball cleanly and hitting several fine winners down the line.

"I'm happy with the way I played," said Suarez, who lost her only other match this year to Zvonareva in Auckland. "I thought the best part of my game was my serve in the first set after I got used to the balls. They are so fast and flying a lot. But I had to be focused and just play my game.12 double faults?

Yes i did say that, but now it seems to have swung totally the other way!! Yes, Vera deserves critisism when shes played badly but is telling her she sux and shes pathetic, useful critisism?

Vera will know herself that she played awful against Suarez, shes not stupid!! But i think right now she just needs to know that their are people that believe in her and believe she can get back to where she was!!

Oh come on give her a break. She's been very nice to us by reaching the final this season. It was a bad loss, but who doesn't have a bad loss before? It's bound to happen. It's only the second month of the year. Give her more time, and she would be winning soon. And even if she doesnt *knocks wood*, she would still rock our world ;).

For those who haven´t seen this already, I just found pics from yesterdays match and you can really see how she must have felt. It´s really hard to see her that way while playing

(Row 3 / Pic 5 and Row 4 / Pic 2 are the ones I speak of)

Link to the pics (http://www.jirobkk.com/album/Pattaya_Women_Open_2006/07_Feb_Part_1/default.asp)Why I don't understand why the report said she "was almost in tears at times", when it seems pretty clear from those pics that she was crying :crying2:

I sure hope that she didn't get upset and collapse on the court again

These kinds of discussions, about what to write when a favorite player of yours is slumping, is part of message boards.

We know Vera can play top 10 tennis, maybe top 5.

After 2004, I thought she might be next to win a major.

But I'm sure she wants to do well.
I know she works hard.

This is not an easy game to be successful at.

As far as giving advice, what can you say besides -

Stay positive, and keep working hard

As far as coaching is concerned, Vera has to decide that, just like Nadia has to decide on hers.

You have to judge players on consistency. And Vera hasn't shown any since 2004.
Talentwise, Vera is right there. But the others work harder than Vera does.
It takes mental effort to focus, and Vera doesn't do the work needed to win matches.

This is not the Vera Zvonarëva I knew before 2005, when she contracted an energy-sapping virus. She would always fight to the bitter end.

If you compare Bepa and Nadia, you'll see a difference in philosophy. Nadia admitted that the mental part of her game was a weakness, and she seems to have started to work on it. Sure, her brain still freezes when she plays Maria, but she isn't losing in the 1st round like she did so many times in 2004.

On the other hand, Bepa seems to basically brush aside comments about her getting emotional on court. There seems to have been no improvement over the years. I don't know if the emotional outbursts are the cause or effect of her poor performances, but they have got to stop

goldenlox

I think if Vera really wanted to win a match, she knows how to focus and play smart.
To play under control.
2004 gave her some money, and now it's not vital that she wins these matches.
So she's goofing around too much.

I tried a few times to describe the match in sentances, but i guess i'm too tired. here's a list:

Sfar has a great serve.
Sfar has a great dropshot.
Sfar was a great scrambler today.
Sfar has a good volley.

Vera wasn't too goot at running down dropshots (there were LOTS of them).
On easy put aways Vera managed to lose the point, or give the ball back to Sfar to continue the rally.
Vera was not volleying enough. I have a feeling that if she did, she would have won, because many points were just BEGGING for her to come to the net, but she much too often stayed back.
Vera chose to lob a lot and everything went out.
Had much too many UEs...

Vera should have won. But she couldn't hold it together.
Sfar played exceptionally for her ranking (she always troubles opponents in Dubai), but Vera...

This puts me in mind of a commentators' exchange during the Australian Open 2006 match between Maria Sharapova (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/shara/) and Daniela Hantuchová (http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/hantu/):

Chris Bailey: "Hantuchová, after her victory over Serena Williams, talked about how she's been working on not technical aspects of her game, but mental - 'not beating herself' was the term that she used. And it's good to hear her talking like that, because that was the problem, wasn't it, that she always used to get down very heavily on top of herself when things looked like they might start to go wrong."

Sam Smith: "Yes, she found it very difficult to stay in the moment of what she was doing, so her mind would go forward. That's something that Sharapova has always been really disciplined on - staying in the match at that time."

Q. You looked in deep trouble in the third set, but you didn't give up. You came back after a bad start in the third set. Is that just your normal fighting out there?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah. But, I mean, she started to play pretty good like third set. She started to hit well. I don't know, I didn't know what to do.
But then I said, "I should play my game. Maybe I can do better."

Q. Do you think that you let frustrations get to you?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, I don't know. I wasn't so confident after the second set 'cause I hit like some easy mistakes over there. I don't know, maybe that's why I start really good.
Myself, it was really windy. I just tried to like hit the serve and it was always hell because it's not possible to.
Then I just -- when it was changeover, I just thought, "Okay, I have to play with more speed."

Q. At the changeovers you put your face in the towel. Is that something you always do or you were just doing because you were angry or frustrated?
VERA ZVONAREVA: No, always (smiling).

Q. What are the elements of your game that you want to make better between now and the end of the year?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Maybe like my serve. Because it's like when I started to play, it was good. Barely lose a game. But second set wasn't so good.
Then I should go to the net more.

Q. When you got to 4-4 in the second set, were you thinking, "I've got this, I can win this one"?
VERA ZVONAREVA: No. I just said, "Okay, this point. This one. Next." I didn't think this. You can't say like that, "Okay, I got this match." Even when you have like 6-0, 5-0 (inaudible).
