I also thought it is her, but..

It is very funny. Look at this picture:

http://www.daviscup.org/images//gallery/22-09-2002-safin2-gr.jpg

It seems to be taken from the same point approximately at te same time. But cannot find even two similar people in the crowd..

Anyone?

article from Sportsweb NewZealand

VERA HAS THE WHITE STUFF

Vera Zvonareva might be missing the snow, but it was her opponent, Tatiana Panova, who was left out in the cold yesterday. In the all-Russian clash, pupil turned master as Zvonareva, eight years Panova's junior at 18, won in a canter on centrecourt, 6-4 6-1. The two practised together leading in to the tournament, but this was the first time they had clashed.

For Zvonareva, this holiday period has been a strange, but fruitful experience.

"I have been practising in Florida because it is very cold in Russia," she said. "It's about minus 20 and it's really strange because it is New Year's in two days and there's no snow."

No white stuff, but plenty of right stuff.

Friends, today I recieved this email but I could not reply it as I don't know the answer.
It is important because Vera is right now in Australia and they are interested in knowing how to correctly pronounce "zvonareva".

This is the email:

"I want to make sure we pronounce zvonareva's name correctly on our programs.
As a Russian speaker myself, I assume that there are two dots on the 'e' in Russian, so the pronunciation would be something like [zvon-uh-RYO-vuh] (closest English) rather than [zvon-uh-REV-uh]. Would you kindly confirm whether this is
correct.

Regards
Aliona Poinkin
Language Research Specialist
Australian Broadcasting Corporation"

Your comments and any kind of help would be vastly appreciated
Rod

Jordan.
Jan 8th, 2003, 12:25 AM
I've always heard it as "zuh-vah-nuh-ray-vuh" :) I'm sure this is the correct way of kinetics or whatever, but its close enough ;)

Vera was so close to getting that seed, just 3 away. Oh well, she has a decent draw at IW. Facing Tatiana Poutchek first round, then her dreaded enemy Iva Majoli!! How many times have Vera lost to Majoli?? Well, i believe Vera has improved from last year and will BEAT Iva this time!! :D.

Vera with a Z
'Sometimes they are killing me and sometimes I'm killing them'

By Matthew Cronin
********************

FROM THE PACIFIC LIFE OPEN IN INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. – One of the most enticing intramural matches you'll ever see was played on Stadium 2 today, with 18-year-old Russian Vera Zvonareva overcoming 17-year-old compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

It was a rematch of their Orange Bowl final, with super-determined Vera and her more straight-ahead ground attack against the bullish "Kuzy" and her whiplash forehand. It was neither player serving particularly hard but with fine placement, Kuzy using her superior conditioning in long rallies and Vera occasionally trying to outfox her with high loopers, short slices and deft angles. There were tossed and cracked rackets, screams in both Russian and Spanish (Kuzy has received her training in Spain) and hard stares at the linespersons.

Vera won by a hair, mostly because she finally figured out late in the match that playing consistently rather than going for outright winners early on in points would propel her to victory.

"I was like, 'Okay, what should I do,'" the 5' 8" blonde said. "Try to hit [winners] again or play defense? When I tried to attack, I made mistakes. It was like I didn't know what to do. Then I said, 'OK, I'm going to count five balls in.' It was going well and then I just started to play my game in the third set."

Vera was better than Kuzy this sweltering Saturday. But make no mistake about it, these two are near equal in ability and will surely play a dozen or so more barnburners before they retire.

"Sometimes its really good when you play the Russians because you don't understand what level you are and what level they are," Vera said. "It was important to beat her."

GOT ONE SET OF OFF SERENA IN PARIS
Vera is not a complete unknown to the tennis universe, being the only woman at '02 Roland Garros to take a set off Serena. On that sunny day in the Bull Ring, she screamed winners for a set before she realized where she was and then Serena simply wore her down.

She ended the 2002 ranked No. 45, an excellent rookie season. But whether she is just more than a Top 20 player remains to be seen. She has excellent fundamentals and is a good mover, but she doesn't knock your hat off like the members of the Top 5 do. The jury is still out on whether she'll ever crack the Top 10 but she definitely has the potential to reach the second weeks of the Slams time and time again. In the fourth round here, she'll have a stern test against Meghann Shaughnessy.

"Each day is different," she said, Sometimes the [high-ranked players] just kill me and sometimes I'm killing them."

Vera Zvonareva

V. ZVONAREVA/S. Kuznetsova
36, 76, 64

MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. You appear to be very flushed. Are you having problems with the sun? Your face is pretty red is what I'm saying.
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, I just came from the court. I was playing like two hours and a half. Maybe that's why.

Q. Two hours and a half?
VERA ZVONAREVA: I guess.

Q. Do you have any goals for where you would like to go this year in the rankings after having made that advance a year ago from 371 to 45? Where are you trying to get this year?
VERA ZVONAREVA: In the beginning of the year, I just thought to be in the Top 30.

Q. Top 20?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Top 30. I'm playing ?? I just try to reach Top 30. Then if it goes well, maybe something else. But first I want to be in Top 30.

Q. How tough of a match was that? That was a real back?and?forth struggle.
VERA ZVONAREVA: I don't know, I just kept playing because I played Juniors, Orange Bowl final, against Svetlana. It was tough, it was really tough. And then when I was losing like 6?5 second set, I was like lucky couple times. I decided just I should keep playing.

Q. But you played a good tiebreaker.
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, second set.

Q. But mentally I saw in the second set you were getting frustrated a lot.
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, because I had some big mistakes. Like I should have win those points and I did mistakes. I was like, "Okay, what should I do? Try to hit again or I should play defense?"
When I tried to attack, I had the mistakes. It was like I didn't know what to do.

Q. So how did you manage to win the third set?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Then I said, "Okay, I try to count five balls in." It was going well, then I just started to play my game in the third set.

Q. So your conditioning was good enough to say, "I will play long points"?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, yeah, I was okay.

Q. You're a young player. There are a lot of young Russians. I wonder what you think of the limits on the number of tournaments that the young players can play. Do you think that's a good rule or do you think they should change the amount of tournaments the players can play when they're coming on tour?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Actually I think it's a good real because you get enough tournaments to play. If you are doing really well, they don't count the Grand Slams as a tournament. So I think it's pretty good, because if you start to play like 25 tournaments a year and then each year you have to defend points, you automatically start to play more tournaments, more and more, then you getting tired.
So if, for example, I started to play 15 tournaments a year, then I play 17, now it's maybe a little bit more. It's good.

Q. So you think the number is good that they have?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, I think it's good.

Q. Is it harder for you to play another Russian girl right around your age?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, I think. I think it's hard to play against everyone. I don't know. Sometimes it's really good when you play Russians because you won't understand what level am I now and what level they are because we are growing up together. I don't know, actually. It's just like another ?? I mean, like to play against other players, the same.

Q. So mentally winning that match, that must have been very important for you today, to be able to beat her?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, it was important to beat her and to make my best on the court, because in the beginning I just missed a lot and I didn't play my tennis, my game. It was very important to play my game today. Actually, I did it in the third set.

Q. Over the past year, do you feel like your results have been very up and down a lot or are you finding a consistent level with your tennis?
VERA ZVONAREVA: You know, it's tough to say because last year, I played against players who were ranked like 80 and maybe lower, and some matches I played against high?ranked players. This year I started to play like main ?? like in the main draw of the tournament. So I play like high?ranked players.
It's tough to understand because I didn't play all those matches against them.

Q. When you're playing against the high?ranked players, do you feel your game is there to stay with them or are you still learning about how you need to play against the better players?
VERA ZVONAREVA: You know, each day is different. Sometimes I feel they just kill me. Sometimes I feel I'm just killing them. It depends.

Q. Has anybody ever told you that you look a little like Kim Clijsters?
VERA ZVONAREVA: No.

Q. When you played Clijsters at the US Open, you were very close to winning. Did you feel you had many chances in that match?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah.

Q. You lost 6?4 in the third.
VERA ZVONAREVA: Actually, I had chances in the second set against her. I was just really nervous. I didn't make it that time maybe.

Q. You won the first set, I gather?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Right. Maybe I will make it next time.

Q. What do you expect out of yourself other than rankings this year? What do you want to do with your tennis this year?
VERA ZVONAREVA: I just want to keep playing and try to play my best tennis each match.

Q. And what about here now that you're into the third round? I think you have Shaughnessy.
VERA ZVONAREVA: I'm not sure. I don't know.

Q. Talk about that a little bit, playing a player of that caliber.
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, I mean, I never played against Shaughnessy before. I mean, I just want to try my best and then we'll see what's going to happen.

Q. Earlier you said in the match you played today you asked yourself, "What should I do? Try to hit again?" What did you decide?
VERA ZVONAREVA: You know, I remember, she played me a short ball and I hit it and I won it. I said, " Okay, next time the same." And it's happen next time. So I just found what I wanted to do.

V. ZVONERAVA/M. Shaughnessy
6?3, 4?6, 6?2

An interview with:

VERA ZVONAREVA

MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Big win.
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah.

Q. Just talk a little about the match and how you felt you came through and won the third set.
VERA ZVONAREVA: Actually, since the first game I understood that she has a really good serve. So I just tried to keep my serve during the whole match. Then if I have a chance to take her.

Q. She returned serve very well. Did you feel you got enough of your first serves in to keep her off of you?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Actually, yeah, my first serve was pretty good today. I just tried to keep it. Then it was fine. I served I think maybe, four aces. Sometimes I served really good first serve, like twice a game, and then it was good.

Q. It was okay?
VERA ZVONAREVA: It was okay to win the game.

Q. Weren't you up a break in the second set? You were ahead in the second set, weren't you?
VERA ZVONAREVA: I think no, I lost my serve.

Q. You lost your serve.
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah.

Q. Just talk about after losing the second set, how you managed to regroup and play better in the third set.
VERA ZVONAREVA: Actually, I just lost my serve in the second set, so I told to myself, "Okay, I should keep my serve or it's going to be really tough." And I was doing this. And then I was really lucky to win her serve at 3?2.

Q. Will you consider that one of the biggest wins of your pro career?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Maybe, yeah. I think so.

Q. Did you feel you played at a high level, that your own level was high?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, I mean my level should be high to win this match. She's a really good player and she doesn't give up.

Q. Do you think you played better today than you did against Clijsters at the US Open?
VERA ZVONAREVA: It's tough to say because they play different game, so I supposed to play different game, as well.
I don't really know.

Q. I watched the first set of your match. I got the feeling you were trying to hit the ball down the middle mostly. Am I right or wrong?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Sometimes I tried because then she can't hit angles when I play to the middle. And then when she played shorter, I just tried to win it.

Q. I also got the feeling that she wasn't playing as good as she might have. Is that right or wrong, do you suppose?
VERA ZVONAREVA: I don't know. I never played against her. I didn't even see a lot of matches, so I don't know.

Q. Did you have anything we might describe as a game plan, a plan that you wanted to use against her? What did you want to do in the match?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Actually, when I go to play against players I never played before, I just try to play my game, try not make a lot of mistakes, and when I have a short ball, to hit it.

Q. This year, up until this tournament, hasn't been so great for you. Why have you played so well during this week?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Because I was practicing a lot before. When I came to play Memphis, then Scottsdale, I wasn't really ready for the matches because I was practicing for one month. I didn't play a lot of matches.
Now I won against Poutchek. It was a pretty good win for me. Against Majoli, I lost three times against her before. Then I just said to myself, "Okay, you can do better if you can win." I don't know, maybe just because I played a lot of matches.

Q. So your confidence is very high? Do you think it's possible you could win your next match, maybe even go further than that?
VERA ZVONAREVA: I just think about my next match. I want to try to do the best I can, then we'll see what's going to happen.

Q. This has been a great tournament for you. You reached the finals of a smaller tournament last year.
VERA ZVONAREVA: I was final in Palermo.

Q. Could you compare this tournament with what it's like for you to reach the quarterfinal of this tournament compared to the final of a smaller tournament? Is this more important?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Maybe. I don't really know. It's just depends what players did I play over there and I play here. It was really important for me, for example, to win against Majoli because I was always losing to her. So maybe this one is more important.

Q. Did that give you confidence maybe for this tournament, beating Majoli for the first time, you feel you could beat anybody?
VERA ZVONAREVA: Yeah, actually it gave me a lot of confidence.

I am impressed with Vera's game. I'd like to see her use a higher ball toss. And I hope she gets into better shape. That will only help her in the touhg matches. But the good news is Vera plays with alot of determination. I only wish all of the Russian girls played with Vera's determination, heart and guts.
