I saw Vera win the Memphis title. After a long week of singles and doubles, Vera came back from down 2-5 in the third set. And won the last 5 games.
Vera is, and was, in great shape. She just didn't make a breakthrough yet this year.
That will come. Vera has to stay focused, keep working, and be patient.

Vera's last 4 losses were to Lindsay, Sveta, Maria, and Amelie. So Vera's been playing well. But not great.
As long as Vera beats the players ranked below her, she should reach the top 10.

If Vera is offered a doubles spot on the Olympic team, she should think hard before she turns it down.
You don't know if she will make a future Olympic team. These Tier III's come and go. The Olympics are special.

Vera Zvonareva spoke of the travel demands that are part and parcel of life on the tour,

"We get used to it. But we're going to be in the United States for a month now, and sometimes after a couple, three weeks you start missing home," said Zvonareva, of Russia. "But we have to do that. It's our job."

goldenlox
Jul 21st, 2004, 02:01 PM
Vera won a close match against Pisnik at Amelia Island, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5. Vera is 2-0 in this matchup.
But Vera has to play well.

cool_olga

Pisnik is not really that dangerous opponent now. Vera should win this one with np.
I wish she won this tournament.
Vera could skip this Cincinnati tournament, even if she has no chanc for Olympics, longer rest before US Open would be better I suppose.

I see that Vera has an agent. That's good, she's top 15. Vera deserves the big buck$ -

Tobias is the point man in dealings involving the Bryan brothers, the top-ranked doubles team in the world, Fish and Vince Spadea, and he plays a key assisting role in the all-encompassing Roddick account. SFX represents six of the top seven American males on tour, including the entire Davis Cup team.

Tobias also represents a player whom he calls his "hidden gem" - 13th-ranked Vera Zvonareva, another of THE up-and-coming Russian stars on the Women's Tennis Association tour. "I think she could be a top-five player really quick," said Tobias. "She is not quite the marketing potential of (Wimbledon champion Maria) Sharapova, but Vera has never lost to her, and has already beaten her this year. I am hoping when Vera matures she will make it."

cool_olga
Jul 21st, 2004, 05:49 PM
She lost to Maria at french open...

It's definitely good for her to have an agent, he will promote her and do many things for her. But she's been with SFX for some time it's not that new thing.

I haven't really been following Vera's career lately, but I do think she's tremendously talented. I did manage to see her play last year in Toronto --- against Babsi I believe --- and her "infamous" tantrums were on full display, even though she dominated.

I haven't seen any of her matches since, and I was wondering if Vera has managed to reign in and control her emotions on court a little better? I guess a lot of people feel that's probably her greatest weakness right now, that she "wears her emotions on her sleeve", and seems too easily distracted.

ys

Vera gets a walkover. It is .. bad for Vera. She is in the 3rd round already and she still didn't play a match and didn't confirm her points at this tournament. She loses tomorrow, she gets just 1 point from this tourney.

goldenlox
Jul 22nd, 2004, 03:08 AM
I've seen Vera be calm, and still not win, still not play her best.
I think her emotions are a part of her personality. People are just looking for easy reasons when Vera doesn't win. It's not one reason.

Vera plays Bartoli in the third round.

I love Vera dearly. I love every side of her. Her game, her shots , her emotions. Every year of her career so far she managed to make a step forward. Not this year yet. This year is stagnation. Her best game is hardcourts. Whatever her clay results say. She doesen't play Olympics. She can focus on the Open. She is one of my Top 5 favourites to win it.

This hasn't been a breakthrough year for Vera. Nastya didn't break through until 22. I don't mind Vera spending another year or two outside the top 10.
As long as she has a coach and keeps working, Vera will eventually move forward.

Not really...But she is not trying to change that. i don't think it's something bad if she get's frustrated sometimes, it's her way to play matches. She said she is 'not nice' sometimes on court because she want to win so much. It's good as long as she wants winning and is hungry.
I think this hardcourt season will be very good for her. Time to play this first match!

A driver's license, and a car, are important things to have. You need to be able to get away from people. When you want to.
It's real freedom. There's nothing like it. A car gives you that.

They all need their own car. That's one of the big differences from 15 to 18. The 18 year old can drive.

"Tennis is deeper than it was 10 years ago," Vera said. "There are no easy matches and you never know who’s going to win, so you have to fight till the end. One day you can beat somebody and the next lose. If I go on court and do my best, I can win any match. If my game isn’t working, it’s really tough to win the match."

But in her last 2 service games, she gave away big points. So there's still a lot of work to do.

Tennis is partly a mental battle, and you have to continue to play well after winning the first set.

I think for Vera to get into the top 10 and stay there, she has to hang in there mentally. And keep her level of play at a consistent high level.
And I think she will learn to do that.

I was very impressed with the way Vera played against Serena. :) She outplayed Williams off the ground. I was surprised by Vera's power and precision off the ground. She definately has the ground game to win a grand slam singles title in her career! :D But does she have the mental toughness to go all the way in a grand slam? Only Williams great serve and phenomenol defense pulled her through in that match. Vera deserved the win but she lost. I only hope suffering such a tough loss isn't a setback for Vera.

Hope you guys now agree with me that Vera has a very good hardcourt game. Honestly, I think that her hardcourt game is better than even her claycourt game. It's just that field on hardcourts is deeper than on clay.

Vera's position in YEC Race is better than her rankings. Meaning, that contrary to popular belief, her 2004 year is better than her 2003. Even if not by much. Though making Top 10 will be tough. The Top 10 players in YEC Race is a rock solid bunch -

1 Davenport 2773
2 Mauresmo 2444
3 HИnin-Hardenne 2321
4 Myskina 2163
5 VWilliams 1952
6 SWilliams 1887
7 Sharapova 1856
8 Kuznetsova 1765
9 Dementieva 1610
10 Capriati 1534

11 Zvonareva 1341

If there is one player whom Vera can push out of Top 10, It must be Capriati.

And Amelie doesn't play well in Paris. And no Justine and Kim this year.
That's why the French Open should be Vera's best major. But Maria was too good for Vera.

If there is one player whom Vera can push out of Top 10, It must be Capriati.I agree, on the HC's she played 3 setters vs. Davenport/Wiliams so far this year. Though her best surface would give the edge on indoor carpet.

The 19-year-old Zvonareva came back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set to down Dechy, who had difficulty dealing with her opponent's searing pace.

``It was a really tough match,'' Zvonareva told reporters. ``The first round in a tournament is always tough to play.

The 19-year-old Zvonareva gave six-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams all she could handle before losing in three sets in a quarterfinal at the JPMorgan Chase Open in Carson last week.

"We motivate each other to do better in the tournaments, but we're still good friends off court," Zvonareva said. "I think it's really important for us to be all together as top players, and we get a chance to practice with each other.

"We speak the same language, and we say, 'What can we do to help each other?' But still, it's a big competition."

The bigger problem is the people fighting with Vera for Top 10.

Venus & Serena have 0 to defend for the rest of the year.
Kuznetsova has basically nothing after her 3rd round US Open comes off.

Sveta is the only Top 12 player that Vera has a realistic shot of catching this year.

The race standings are not the best way to judge true rankings.

Vera already has 15 tournaments towards her record, and can only add 2 more.

Vera has no 1 point tournaments to her record in 2004... so, she'll have to go deep into tournaments to be gaining any points.

That's good. I knew Vera would be ready to play. I'll watch Vera's next match.
And I can't wait.

That's good.
But I think Vera didn't watch Sveta play - she went to practice for a very long time.

I meant it as humor. Vera knows Sveta's game very well. Watching a few points won't matter.

Let's wait and see. If Serena Wiliams produces the same kind of tennis as in her previous match, she'll struggle against Bovina. Vera will probably play Serena Wiliams. But it would be great if Bovina can manage the upset, Vera and Lena B know each other the longest as top 20 players. Both started to play at the same club called Chaika.

nice win from vera. can't say i'm really happy, becoz she ousted another fave of mine...yeah, but you're never particulary content, when two players you like very much play against each other...
best wishes in the next rounds:D

Vera/Lena L. beat Nastya/Lena D. 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Vera probably plays Serena tomorrow. A very tough match, but one of these times, Vera will break through.
Maybe tomorrow.

Vera has won 9 of 11, only Lindsay and Serena have beaten her. Vera gets better and better.
A great way to head toward the US Open. But Vera belongs in Athens.

Vera plays Serena. The way Vera is playing, she's going to reach the best players in the draw.
At the Tier I, the best players are there. Vera should play the way she's been playing.
Improving is a part of becoming the best you can be. And Vera is improving right now.

"I played really well today," said Zvonareva, who lost in three sets to Williams in Carson.

"I was pretty offensive. I'm looking forward to another good match against Serena," she told reporters

I have a gut feeling that Vera will win tomorrow! She's serving well, hitting lots of winners, few UE's, and is closing out matches with ease! Even her match against Kuznetsova she closed out easily!

I know Serena is tough, but Vera is getting closer and closer to the top.
Vera will make a break through. Maybe tomorrow. I know it's coming.

Vera has to believe in herself. She'll be playing against serena not on the court only, but also in her head. As long as she believes in her play, she might win this. Besides every1 knows that serena hasn't been playing her best lately, which is a great chance for vera. but again, even if williams ain't playing her best, she's still a very dangerous opponent.
she really need this win. hope it's gonna happen :D

Vera, you should buy your own computer. And a car. It's good to have both. And a buy a big flat screen tv.
They are great too.

I really hope Vera can get her ranking inside the top 10 soon because there aren't 10 better players than her right now and I don't think it's fair!

Sharap0va

Sprem is better than Vera. She's not ranked ahead of Vera. It's not fair.

OMG, I'm travelling around Europe and Russia :worship: for a few weeks, meaning limited access to the internet, and Bepa suddenly explodes into some great form :yippee:.

It's such a shame that I can't be here all the time to celebrate Bepa's success , but I'm happy to see that lots of people are behind her.

The win against Sveta must be a huge relief for Bepa, as it's her first win against a higher-ranked opponent since Toronto last year. She now needs to go on the offensive against Serena because Bepa is mos def one of the biggest hitters on tour, and when she is switched on, she can paint the lines almost effortlessly.

I want Bepa to silence all of the haters who think that she will never fulfil her potential because of her head. Bepa is the real deal, and although her progress has slowed, she has been playing consistent tennis. Bepa will cause some big upsets this hardcourt season, and I share ys' optimism about her chances at the US Open.

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Udachi Bepa!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
