:hearts: amazing! just a bit over a year ago, she was floating around in the 270s and next week she will be in the top40!! :woohoo:

I smell a French Open seeding... (which would be ironic cause she didn't play last year because she was in the finals of strausbourg and therefore ineligible for rg qualies :D )

From WTATour.com:

Karolina Sprem's leap in the rankings could get another boost after reaching her first Tier II quarterfinal. The young Croatian defeated Cara Black, 64 63 to mark her spot in the final eight. Sprem, who was ranked No.270 just 13 months ago, said she is feeling more confident with her game.

"I was very surprised to go up in the rankings so quickly, but my coach always tells me to believe in myself, and now I'm beginning to do that," Sprem said.

I figured her ranking out and then figured out what 35-42 were losing and plugged her #s in where she belonged.

She already impressed me in Strasbourg last year but what I saw this week stunned me. This girl could go as far as top 5. Smashnova and Black were completely blown away. Black was defending all the time and Sprem scoring winning strikes at a remarkable speed all the time.

I really think that she has some of the most promising groundstrokes of any of the up and coming players. She hits hard and heavy shots and although she is not a very tall girl I think she will be a force to be reckoned with!!

Agressive, hard hiting, and she's super fast on the court. She covers very well. Her movement on clay is nearly flawless as she slides into every shot and seems on balance nearly all the time. No lunging or anything like that.

At this rate she's going, she *should* have a Top 32 seeding at RG. She's only defending 37.50 points before the seeds are announced. (Granted, she's 170 coming off the week before RG - but that doesn't impact seedings. :D ).

esqui:Yes, I think that her confidence level is a key to her. Once she gets on a roll, she really rolls! Coming thru quallies so many times to win Challengers, and reach Tier III finals has to help you learn how to win matches.

Wow... if she does well in the next 3 months she can get into top-20!!

Actually it's 50.5 (38.5 + 4 + 7 + 1) before/until Strasbourg. Then she has 2 "big" ones coming off. (173.25 for Strasbourg and 160.25 for Vienna before Wimbledon).

So, she should be cloes to nabbing an RG seed, but Wimbledon seed depends if she can win a few (3/4) rounds on the dirty dirt.

But she'll add again this summer/fall where she doesn't have too much defending:

Redbridge 25K W 02.17.2003 37.50
Castellon 25K W 03.17.2003 38.50
Casablanca V QF3 03.31.2003 7.00
Budapest V QF2 04.14.2003 4.00
Bol III R1 04.28.2003 1.00
Strasbourg III F 05.24.2003 173.25
Vienna V F 06.08.2003 160.25
Wimbledon Grand Slam R2 06.23.2003 40.00
Sopot III R1 07.28.2003 1.00
Helsinki IV SF 08.04.2003 51.00
New Haven II QF1 08.15.2003 1.00

Go Karolina Go!!!! I've also been watching her since she broke through the Challengers. She is an amazing talent, but I've only caught a glimpse of her on TV. She should beat Denisa, then who knows against Patty or Silvia- certainly she could either one of these ladies a run for their money. Probably overmatched if Kim gets to the final, but she's well on her way to the Top 25 at least before RG. I'd love to know where she'd end up if she reached the semis or finals in this tourni!

Her rise in the ranking should get her into the MD at Qatar (hopefully), then her next tournament is Indian Wells!!! She can build up a lot of points at both of these events with a decent draw.

AjdeNate!
Feb 20th, 2004, 12:34 AM
A semifinal puts her around 34, runner up about 27-29ish, and a win (over Kim) puts her at 24.

K-Lina reminded me of Granville in that she is a late bloomer coming out of nowhere with zero junior record and no history, at least Laura was unbeatable at NCAA, K-Lina just came out winning challengers playing 10K qualifying to now playing high tiers, just goes to show you if you get talents, one year is all you need to make a name out of yourself (PS: comparison with Kim Clijsters who made top 50 from outside 409 when she rose past Justine) but surviving high tiers is a whole other matter

Feb 20th, 2004, 03:21 AM
Actually, K-Lina sucked for most of 2001, before winning a bunch in 2002, and the big streak in 2003.
