Quatar, Emerites Feb. 17, 2002

Future Tennis Hall of Fame player, Monica Seles, shocked the tennis world today when she announced her engagement to a local billionaire sheik.

"I didn't like him at first because he was always asking me out", said the smiling Seles. When asked what made her change her mind, Seles revealed, "His wonderful smile, this soild gold trophy, 24kt. diamond ring, diamond necklace, chest of gold coins, 10 lbs. of precious stones and a 5 million dollar house ... for my dog".

Seles will continue to play tennis, but will soon be playing on the Seles Womens Association of Tennis (SWAT).
The shiek also sent several of his very large close employees to Germany to look for a special person in his fiance's life for undisclosed reasons.

Seles was then carried by four of her new servants to her personal 757 for her next match. Her dog followed in his new Jetstream.

LMAO. :)

Only a 757? Monica should have held out for a Concorde at least. :)

Concordes may only land in certain airports in the continental U.S.A. amd the 747 is bigger. :p

You've got a good point there TR. I was only thinking of speed, but the 757 will suffice. Monica should make sure she has a water tight pre nuptual agreement (everything he has is hers, and everything she has is her own):p

I'm probably the lone one out who doesn't know this question, but is Monica dating anyone right now? If not, I was thinking, wouldn't it be funny if she married her trainer, Mike Sell? Then her name would change from Monica Seles to Monica Sell.

Lol, just something I thought of when I seen him being interviewed during the Aussie Open.

And yes, a few Monica fans did come in here without noticing the undercurrent of the thread.

Pathetic would be injecting yourself into a rankings thread to diss numbers. Would have preferred I posted different numbers there, more in tune with your reality, but not actually based on the WTA's ranking system?

Here you have 2 posts of ranking intervals by yours truly. We also have 3 responses from a couple Williams fans who recognize the significance of the numbers and ponders their siginificance to their own favourites. Sandwiched in between we have a mindless invasion by a crap disturber who poses as a Williams fan.

Here are the points if you subtract everything through Roland Garros:

1. Lindsay Davenport 3350
2. Venus Williams 3160
3. Jennifer Capriati 2646
4. Kim Clijsters 2620
5. Monica Seles 2417
6. Martina Hingis 2160
7. Serena Williams 2016
8. Justine Henin 2011
9. Jelena Dokic 1991
10. Amelie Mauresmo 1189

Now we see a wide open field.

Wow, I see how much an injury at this time last year could affect the rankings this year. I mean, Monica will definitely do some damage on clay, and Lindsay missed the French and other clay tourneys last year so she doesn't have much to defend on the clay.

How about subtracting points through the US OPEN? Just kidding

Venus is still in good postition to rise and rise. Although I just want her to remain healthy and continue playing well in tourneys. Serena though is still my pick to really rise on up.

WOW, Venus would still be #3 after Wimbeldon? In my opinion if she plays some tourneys at the end of the season she will be in great shape. I really do think that the French Open is going to be the key for who will be in the top 5 at the end of the season.

I honestly don't find the whole thread funny but then, maybe my sense of humour isn't very good.

But whether it's funny or not, including that line was totally uncalled for, I guess most Seles fans didn't notice it, but making fun of someone's personal tragedy is truly pathetic.

Joking about tragedy has provided some of the best, sharpest cutting-edge comedy of our times. The juxtaposition of laughter and tears is one of the most effective artistic devices around. It takes skill to mix the two without it descending into tastelessness and, imo, TeeRexx did that.

I don't want to get caught in the crossfire but, as a Monica Seles fan, I must say I'm very sensitive to Monica's stabbing and didn't find the humor in that particular remark. I wasn't sure where Tee was going but I chose to ignore the comment and gave him the benefit of the doubt assuming no malice was meant. Comedians sometimes offend trying to make people laugh and that remark may have been a bit over the edge.

In retrospect it would have been more sensitive if Tee had left it out and I can understand why some have taken offense. Perhaps Tee might edit his original post out of respect for Monica and those that find it offensive? :wavey:

Keep the faith Fig... don't lose hope! There is still the chance that Venus or Serena, maybe even both will get stabbed. They'll probably be mobbed while they're playing a doubles match oneday!

There are many, many, many hostile, tennis fans out there who are thinking, "Oh no.. God No!! They're taking our sport... they're taking our sport!" So don't give up kid... these folks just may come through for you yet.

Sartrista7, I understand your interpretation of this thread and how you arrived there. I don't take issue with anyone who may have found this thread funny, save for the originator. It's a matter of interpretation, and I interpret a couple of things in this thread (not just what Fingon mentioned) to be veiled attacks on Monica. Such a thread could be funny to me, but for that the word "good natured" isn't particularly close to my mind when I read the original post.

I don't understand the problem?? He wasn't making fun of Monica being stabbed but the fact that the Man is still walking around. To me that is making fun of Germany for their poor criminal system?? Monica, herself is still angry with Germany over the situation, which is evident by her not playing there anymore, I think that was a play on that anger! Geeez. What is the problem is it the differences in cultures, ie american humor verses british humor?? What?? I don't see the problem.

It sort of portrays Monica as a money-loving gold-digger who would marry a man for gold, cash, and a jet. I do think *some* Venus fans would not think it was funny if Venus was portrayed as this, but that something else entirely. I thought the humor failed because Monica seems SOOO not that type! ;) Sure, she went out with that Microsoft guy, but I don't recall Monica accepting million dollar condos or 45-carat rings as gifts. It doesn't seem to have been done with bad intentions, but it wasn't all that funny, imo.

Anyway, it does raise something interesting, Monica has to rely on a boyfriend to mete out justice for her? I do wonder if someone close to Monica, who saw her the subject of an attempted murder and who saw her depression and despondence when the public didn't from 93-95 (her "dark" years), it might be natural to want to "take the guy out" for revenge. Some she's gone out with, her brother, and father certainly would have access to cash and means to make that happen, if they were so inclined (and I'm not saying they were). If someone did that to my child or husband or something, I might at least think about it. Monica doesn't seem criminally inclined or someone who would condone someone doing this for her (as much as the guy would deserve it), but I wonder if it has crossed someone's mind who is close to her, or some crazed fan for that matter.

I can totally see how the idea of her being money hungry could upset her fans, except that it is a play on the photo and how rich Shieks generally are. I couldn't understand thinking the other part was funny but being upset about the one line, I didn't get. The tone is definitely not negative. When Venus wins Dubai we will get a picture of her dressed to the nines in Middle Eastern Gear and if someone can come up with a catchy story for a photo so be it.

I don't think it's the stabbing "joke" that was that bad because it sadly was sort of ironic in the joke that a boyfriend is all she has left to give her justice (as the German legal system did not). It's just we'll see if Venus wins this week and someone makes a joke that she'd fuck some shiek she didn't like to get gold, jewelry and a jet, that *some* people freak out about Venus-bashing. The caption and the joke I think were not done in bad taste or with bad intentions, some of it was sort of funny, but if someone had made this joke with Venus, it would have potentially been an ugly scene. Should Venus win this week, and a similar picture is taken, we'll know for sure! Venus, you have to win this week!

Well, the point is, it was a harmless enough joke, but I'm sure there's a picture of Venus with the Antwerp diamonds where her mouth is open or something or her tongue is out or the trophy is in an awkward position against her body, and it would have been easy to write a caption about how Venus was willing to give sexual favors to the tournament director to keep the trophy or perform some lewd act with the trophy in order to keep it, as Venus herself said she loved the trophy. It could have been potentially funny given the proper picture, but there would have been a huge fall out that I was calling Venus a hooker or something or accusing her of being a hussy. In fact, I have no doubt I would have been (will be?) flamed. It's just *some* Venus fans can make somewhat decent jokes about others, but Venus is supposed to be off-limits for similar jokes. Venus has taken a lot of shit over the years that was not fair, but so has Monica. ;) And I'm not even a big fan of Monica.

As usual mr TR loves to play the victim and accuse every white man of being a racist, so, in his own little word he is justified to bash anyone because he is part of an oppressed minority.

1) I've never been to Indian Wells nor I plan to
2) I would never pay to watch a Venus or Serena match, unless they play one of my favourites.
3) I don't say obsenities to players, or anyone else, that's you my friend, don't judge me with your own low class standards.

I don't remember him calling Monica a slut, prostitute or a hussy?? I think that is reading a lot more into the joke than was intended.

Thanks for the suggestion, Fin, old buddy.
I will try and put up some Indian Wells stuff when their tourney takes off.
I thought that was you that Richard was going after last year in the stands at IW?

Oh well, such is life.

sartrista7 - Very Funny

She'd probably become Monica Sell-Seles, and people would forever assume she'd acquired a stammer from her marriage

Really... Tee Rex has made funny captions about Venus and Serena.
Some you might remember them from the Old SanexBoard.

Do we have to bring our old grudges over to this board.
