Lindsay won the Pan Pacific title last Sunday with losing just 13 games in the whole tournament. The German Eurosport commentator said it is a new record. Kim Clijsters had that record before winning in Luxemberg.

Well done, Lindsay! Im proud of you! :bounce: :hearts:

It may be a record for that tournament, but I don't believe it's a record for all tier 1 titles.

so 13 games is the fewest lost en route to a title?? that's awesome, especially at a tier 1, GO LINDSAY :)

Yay for Lindsay...when there are no top 10 players at a tier I, this is what happens.

The Hingis 1997 thing was when she received a w/o in the final, so I guess they didn't count it.

Andrew.
Feb 11th, 2004, 09:42 PM
There is no reason not to count it... Dokic was injured against Davenport so it was almost a w/o.

And they forgot to count Martinez wins at Hamburg too...

Well she didn't get a walkover OR retire. I believe this is the least amount of games lost by a player who played all of their scheduled matches - i.e. din't receive a walkover or a retirement.

 Conchita Martinez - Hamburg 95... 7 games losts.

I'm talking about this tournament......

I was going to post this too! And I think it may well have been a tier 1 actually. Also Chris Evert won the 1976 US Open and only lost 12 games en-route to the title: amazing!

This is not a record or anything, but I found this to be very surprising.

Venus at Hamburg 99

R16 Magui Serna (ESP) W 6-3 6-1
QF Amanda Coetzer (RSA) W 6-4 6-3
SF Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (ESP) W 6-1 6-3
F Mary Pierce (FRA) W 6-0 6-3

Venus has also lost only one set at New Haven in four years, ironically to Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Venus is tough to take a set from at New Haven, Justine was the only one ever to do it. Justine is now #1 in the world.........

In the first place these "records" we are talking about can hardly be worth anything since some Tier1 events you have to win five matches and in others just four.

Moreover, in the old days top players did not have first-round byes they had to outright win the tournament from round 1 to the final.

So these records don't really mean anything.
And by the way, is the German Open considered a Tier1 event? Even though it is a prestigious tournament I thought it was only a Tier2 event like Eastbourne is.

German Open is tier I, maybe you are thinking of Hamburg which was a tier II.

Ai, Elena and Chanda were ranked in the top ten. I don't see how anyone could've missed that (bandabou).

Perhaps because they don't seem to be top ten players..

Ai ranked #8?

Reminds me of a quote about the tour when Monica was away from the game.

"Steffi and the seven dwarfs" only now it would be

"justine and the mental midgets"

Why won't they seem to be? They worked their way there, got the results and rightly won their place in the elite 10. Sure, players like Venus, Serena, Lindsay and Jenn were mostly injured, but Ai, Elena and Chanda couldn't help that. They won tournaments and posted consistent results...so yeah, I don't understand your point.
