I thought Venus had points to defend in Antwerp
because she was the champion last year?

I'm not worried about the ranking.
If she's healthy then it really doesn't matter.

Because of the messed up stagger, everyone's Antwerp points come off this week, which is why Venus dropped in the rankings despite not having any points to defend in tourneys this week.

I think to the contrary. Double scroll bars make navigation much more difficult.

BTW... ranking was updated after QF...
Pierce and Safina are up to 30 and 31 respectively.
Win for Pierce in SF will lift her to 27 (28 if Safina also wins).
Win for Safina over Clijsters will lift her to 26.
Golovin entered the top-100 at aprox 90.

so Mary will come back and push some of the Russian teens down,
but 9 out the TOP 35 are Russians, that greater than 25% with 4 teenagers,
kudos to them, they are the only ones with good chance to win a high tier this yr,
least year there was only one high tier teenager winner, that being Kim,
hopefully the Russians can do it this year

ranking updated after SF.
Pierce up to #27.
If she wins the final, she'll be #23.
Kim close the gap from Justin a bit. It's now "just" 776 pts, and could be "only" 608 pts if Kim wins the final.
Nothing to worry about... Henin should hold on #1 until she defends her French title...

Well, if Venus drops out of the top 20, I hope that these tournaments will stop seeding her in the top four. I really, really want her to be seeded where her ranking says she should be seeded. That would make for more interesting matches early on.

nitsansh
Feb 16th, 2004, 03:39 AM
According to WTA decision, Venus status will be reviewed after she uses her special seeding in 4 tournaments. So far she played in one (Tokyo). Grand Slams are not WTA tournaments and don't count in this quota.

*sigh* Justine better win Indian Wells this year, or she could be in some trouble in the rankings! However is she does win Indian Wells (and defends her Antwerp, Dubai, Charleston, Berlin points) she should be ok until the French Open. That's a lot of IFs.

kerbear
Feb 16th, 2004, 04:17 AM
Well when Cap comes back in Dubai she'll just have to defend those semi points. Guess that's why she's coming back now, cuz she has some real points to defend.

Justine had better defend hers if she wants to remain #1. Kim keep creeping closer and closer. If Justine doesn't win Antwerp and Dubai and keep going she and Kim could be battling again.

Hope that Amelie also comes back in Dubai to defend her semi points. :)

The points coming off next week are from Scottsdale (RIP) and Acapulco.
Kim does not actually lose points because it's now her 18th score.
Sugiyama is likely to drop outside the top-10.
Coetzer, who doesn't play next week, could be out of the top-50.
Big drop in prospect also for Shaughnessy, Stevenson, Diaz Oliva.

No ranks again on Mar 29.

TBE, thanks for the correction.

Despite the "loss" of 30 pts, Myskina will still overtake Capriati if she wins the final.

There are very few moves this week.
Myskina 1 up to #6 (#5 if she wins final)
Kuznetsova 6 up to #14 (#13 if she wins final)
Shaughnessy 4 up to #26
Dechy 1 up to #28
Sanchez-Lorenzo 1 up to #35 (#33 if she gets to final, #31 if she wins tourney)
Likhovtseva 1 up to #40

Ranking for March 22 is up (IW 2003 points dropped)

Notes:
Myskina is ahead of Davenport on "safe points" in 4th place
If Capriati doesn't play she will drop to 7th
The biggest loser could be Coetzer, who might be off the top-60 if she lose early!

so I guess, Many does drop out of top60 after she withdraws from IW...

nitsansh
Mar 9th, 2004, 04:06 AM
Amanda will be in the mid-60s... she's now at #62, but if any of Czink, Schaul, Vakulenko or Jankovic win their 1st round match they overtake her...
Capriati's withdrawal means Serena will advance to #6 with just one point lead over Jenny... but I guess that won't be for long as Serena has big points coming off at Miami...
Myskina and Davenport will battle for 4th place... whoever gets further will probably get it...
Chanda Rubin can overtake Dementieva if she reaches QF... Petrova and/or Zvonareva are in position to get into the top-10 at Sugiyama's expense...
Kuznetsova need just one win to overtake Farina and Dokic may do that as well...
Smashnova is likely to stay in 19th: She needs to reach QF to overtake Schnyder while Schiavone or Maleeva probably need the same to move above her... if the latter 2 lose early, Sharapova or Zuluaga can get into the top-20...

Mar 9th, 2004, 04:34 PM
Thank you Judio... Keep correcting me if I make such mistakes....

That means Pierce, who doesn't play at IW but didn't last year either so don't have points to defend, is 3 places up at this moment... but Raymond and possibly Shaughnessy (if she beat a top-75 player) will overtake her if they get to 3rd round.
For those who want to calculate the ranking, the round points for IW are:
Qualifying 2nd round losers: 6.25
Qualifiers: 11
2nd round: 16
3rd round (last 32): 28
4th round (last-16): 45
QF: 81
SF: 146
Final loser: 228
winner: 325
Quality points should be added, of course...
For seeds, 2nd round QP are no higher than 10, but mostly 8 and 4... the top-8 seeds can't get more than 10 pts in the 3rd round as well (except for Sanchez-Lorenzo which is 15) and seeds 9-16 can't get more than 15 pts in the 3rd round except for Serna who is worth 23 pts... then it's as many as 35 pts for the 5-8 seed who is drawn to play Dokic in the 4th round, and a maximum 23 pts for the other top-8 seeds...

Iveta Benesova should have 61 tourn pts
you only get the QUALITY points if you are a LL and you WIN a match in maindraw.

only if you lose in your 1st rd then you retain your quali rd pts.

Iveta should therefore lose her 6.25 pts she "got" for qualifying match win.

Updated after 2nd semifinal.

Justin extended her lead to 1085 pts.
Davenport secures 4th place.

Win in final will lift Justin to 7626 pts = 1237 pts over Kim. With Kim out until late April I think that secures Justin will stay #1 after RG.
If Lindsay win she'll get to 3197 pts = 40 pts from Mauresmo in 3rd place.

i mean her ranks down to 45ish after Miami and Sarasota pts come off.

They both fall off at same time when new ranks come out on Apr 5.
And also Casablanca points...

In fact I guess that Davenport and Amelie really don't care to know if they are 3rd or 4th in the ranking.

Her name in bright red as the winner, on top of everybody else, with that number!
I love it!
I know stuff like this never lasts and I'm enjoying it.
It's all relative, I know, points don't say everything, but I like it!

1200 is a huge lead. I think Justine will , more or less, maintain that lead going into the French Open. She didn't play Rome last year and was a semifinalist at Amelia, so if she loses some points at Berlin and/or Charleston, she'll make up for that in Rome.

Fortunately, she has nearly no points to defend thereafter until Roland Garros : 10.25 points only.

These are the points added for win in the final only.
97 is the difference between winner's points (325) and runner-up points (228).
75 and 43 are the quality points each one should get for beating her opponent, according to their ranking (special seeding in case of Serena).
