View Full Version : No Amelie in Paris Open

Feb 7th, 2004, 01:57 PM
Paris, France - Amelie Mauresmo has pulled out of the WTA Paris Open which starts on Monday after failing to recover from the shoulder injury that forced her premature retirement from the Australian Open.
Mauresmo looked to have finally laid her injury problems to rest after romping through the early rounds in Sydney last month.

But she tearfully announced that she had failed a fitness test and was withdrawing less than an hour before her quarter-final showdown with Colombia's Fabiola Zuluaga.

The French player, beaten by American Serena Williams (http://serena.wtnworld.com/serena/Home) in the final of the Paris Open last year, suffered the injury when stretching for a volley during her fourth round match against Australian Alicia Molik.

She will be replaced by Switzerland's world number 15 Patty Schnyder (http://schnyder.wtnworld.com/schnyder/Home), organisers announced.

I'm relieved - don't rush back until that nasty injury is fully healed. We've learned to become a patient bunch us Momosapians!

A bit of planning! ;) Luckily the autograph session was announced in advance, so we got there early, to be near the front of the queue. It was fairly well organised, with railings everywhere, so after 'meeting' Amélie, you went off to the left, which is where most people stayed to take photos, (like the first few of mine). But we went around the back of the queue and to the right of the railings, you could get much closer and it seems (as things turned out) the lighting was much better for taking pics too! :D The autograph session was 30 minutes, so I reckon we had about 20 minutes to take pics!! :woohoo: ;) I took about 40, these are the best of those!! :p

Hi Lapin :wavey:

I think they are some of the best pics I've ever seen of Amélie - she looks beautiful in every one. I hope you had a great time at the event as well and am so glad Amélie showed up there. It can't have been easy for her and shows that she is such a great character!

Thanks! :o

Yes, it was such a nice surprise to walk through the door at the Stade Coubertin on the first day I was there (Wednesday) and see a notice saying Amélie was going to do an autograph signing session later that day!! :D It really meant a lot to all her fans that she was there and we could take photos etc., even if she couldn't play. :D

(Thanks to vallee from Amélie's official site for the following info/'quotes'): On Wednesday, Amélie was asked if it wasn't difficult for her to be there when she couldn't play, but she said it was more difficult when she'd had to forfeit from the tournament on Friday, and now it was passed. Apparently that evening there was going to be a dinner with everyone from the Fed Cup team (Guy & Löic were also there), to talk about the tie against Germany in April.

Amélie was at Coubertin also on Sunday, and went on court to present Mary with her runners-up trophy and even made a little speech! She said that she hesitated before agreeing to go onto the court and would have preferred to return with a racquet in her hands, that Kim played really well and Mary was probably tired today. She was very nice/friendly, smiling and cool; nevertheless very moved to find herself on the court in 'casual' (clothes).

Thanks to Linnie for posting the two pics! :D
