Jan 21st, 2004, 11:26 PM
Things are looking good for the Russina's today. :D But I am worried about Lina letting it slip away against the tenacious Strycova.

goldenlox
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:29 PM
Dinara up 3-0. Elena serving for the match again, now at 5-2.

I'm really really surprised that Tati beat Smashnova, and easily too. That's a great win for her.

Good day for Russinas... let's hope Lina pulls it out.

ys
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:31 PM
But the first Russian girl to create a big upset today is a future French star Tanya Golovina, who kicked out Smashnova/Pistolesi/whatever_her_real_name_is..

goldenlox
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:34 PM
Is she more Russian than Anna SP?

the cat
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:34 PM
That's an amazing win by Tatiana! :bounce: She proved that her dominant win over Mikaelian wasn't a fluke. Somewhere Nick Bollettieri is smiling. :D

GL, Tatiana moved to France when she was a baby. But she said that she speaks Russian to her parents when they are at home. So there is some Russian left in her. She has an older sister and her father played for the Russian national hockey team.

I am surprised by Tatiana's 2 great wins at Oz. Beating a hit or miss player like Mikaelian is one thing. But thrashing a fine player and human backboard like Pistolesi is another. Well done Tati! :)

Jan 21st, 2004, 11:35 PM
Lina up 2-0, Elena had a match point, now 40-40.

ys
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:37 PM
So Lena is also through. After dropping the first set to Randriantefi, she was in smashing form conceding only 6 games in last 4 sets. Dinara and Lina are struggling mightily.

Keith17
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:38 PM
Lina breaks for 3-0.

GREAT day for Russia today.

The top half and bottom half are like two different worlds.

ys
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:39 PM
Is she more Russian than Anna SP?
I think so. Anna's Israeli citizenship suggests some Jewish origin. Tanya is Russian.

goldenlox
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:43 PM
Dinara returning 7-5, 5-2.

Keith17
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:46 PM
Anna can also be Italian because of her husband. I think she lives there now.

Come on Dinara, finish off Amanda. Just hit it hard and she'll fall.

Jan 21st, 2004, 11:46 PM
How is Dinara struggling, ys? She's up 7-5 5-2. I hope she isn't hurt.

And Keith, the scoreboard I just checked says Lina is up 2-1 in the third set. I wish it was 3-0.

ys
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:47 PM
In Dinara's match there are now all prerequisits for a major choke job.. Lets pray for it not to happen..

the cat
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:49 PM
I hope Dinara doesn't give it away. This could be a breakthrough win for her.

ys
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:50 PM
And Dinara serves it out from 0:30 :woohoo: . That's something unthinkable in Russian women's tennis..

the cat
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:53 PM
ys, maybe the Russina teens will change the image of female Russian tennis players to the image of winners and not chokers unable to serve out matches. But struggling to serve out matches is a problem for most female tennis players. Not just the experienced Russina's.

Jan 21st, 2004, 11:54 PM
Lina's in a real battle.

the cat
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:56 PM
Lina and Strycova are tied 3 all in the third set. If Lina holds serve here she'll be in good shape the rest of this match.

ys
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:56 PM
Fight , Lina, Fight!

ys
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:58 PM
Lina breaks for 4:3. Now hold!

Keith17
Jan 21st, 2004, 11:59 PM
Dinara beating Amanda isn't as impressive as you think. Amanda's game has fallen so far the past few months. 3rd round is good, now Kim crushes Dinara.

goldenlox
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:00 AM
For Dinara, each win at a major is important. She turns 18 in April.

Keith17
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:02 AM
Maria is only 16, thus she is better.

ys
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:04 AM
Very well done, Lina! :woohoo:

the cat
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:10 AM
Congrats to Lina on her win and for keeping her nerve when the going got tough! :) :D

Don't be a spoil sport, Keith. ;) That's a good win for Dinara over Coetzer. She needed that. And I don't care if she gets steamrolled by Clijsters. Dinara needs to play a big match on a big stage and playing Clijsters on a show court will be a very big match for her.

TheBoiledEgg
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:11 AM
a great day so far :woohoo: :D

Lina  good battle
Dinara well done :yeah:
Nastya :D cruise control :)
Lena L :D WOW :D

Tanya G :) impressive :)

Masha should win too
Vera has an uphill task, but who knows when two take to court
good luck Vera :)

ys
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:14 AM
For one, I think Dinara learnt something from her crushing losses to eventual winners at two last US Opens. She will give Kim a good fight.

goldenlox
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:17 AM
With Lina and Maria moving up, I wonder how many Russians will pass Lena B. in the rankings?

TheBoiledEgg
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:23 AM
Sveta is past Lena as well.

goldenlox
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:25 AM
The way things are going, Anna T. will pass her soon.

Keith17
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:28 AM
Thanks for letting me know.

I'm really enjoying Lena dropping out of the Top 30, and the best years of her career are over.

goldenlox
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:31 AM
It makes the comeback this summer that much more dramatic.

TheBoiledEgg
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:31 AM
dinara is into Top 40 as well but its still early as alot of pts can still be added

Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:31 AM
Not so fast, Keith. Lena has her best tennis in front of her. :) She's only 20 and she has a big game that needs years to develope.

Keith17
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:32 AM
She can't have a big game when she doesn't even want to have one...

goldenlox
Jan 22nd, 2004, 12:37 AM
In the last two majors, Lena has left a lot of points on the table.
She needs good advice. Better than what she's getting now.

Keith17
Jan 22nd, 2004, 01:02 AM
Lena needs some time off from tennis. She desperately needs to put some weight back on, and get back that mindset she had at the end of 2002. She was so cocky and confident then. Now it's like she just hopes she'll win.

goldenlox
Jan 22nd, 2004, 01:06 AM
She played well late in 2003. She gets two weeks off now.

Keith17
Jan 22nd, 2004, 01:08 AM
She did play well, but it didn't change her mindset. Lena is scheduled to play Paris and Antwerp. I'd rather see her skip that stretch.

goldenlox
Jan 22nd, 2004, 01:10 AM
I wish I could have seen her play this week. Just to see if Lena was trying to change tactics. Her power game is her best weapon, why throw it away?

Keith17
Jan 22nd, 2004, 01:14 AM
Maybe she got so skinny so she can't be powerful anymore. She's the next Amanda Coetzer, only 2 feet taller.

goldenlox
Jan 22nd, 2004, 01:18 AM
Coetzer played Lena last year. Maybe the next Justine.

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Teenager Dinara Safina led a raft of Russian women into the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday.
The little sister of former world number one Marat Safin, Safina upset South Africa's Amanda Coetzer 7-5, 6-3, to post her best Melbourne Park result.

The 17-year-old was beaten in the first round last year but proved too much of a handful for 27th seed Coetzer.

Elena Likhovtseva emulated Safina by eliminating another seed in Francesca Schiavone.

Likhovtseva thumped the 18th-seeded Italian 6-2, 6-2, in double-quick time.

Anastasia Myskina continued to cut through the draw with a straightforward 6-2, 6-4, win over Emmanuelle Gagliardi and Lina Krasnoroutskaya completed the Russian quartet, beating Czech Barbora Strycova 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

I think Vera D. acquitted herself quite well against Venus for the first time they played. :) Being beaten 6-4 6-2 by Venus is a respectable scoreline for Vera. Well done Vera! :D

Keith17
Jan 22nd, 2004, 05:14 PM
Vera D. played much much better than she did vs. Ashley.

Vera impressed me, in that she wasn't intimidated at all by Venus. Vera never got aggravated, and never stopped trying to play her game. She wasn't afraid to step up, and take advantage when Venus hit a weak reply.

Vera D. reminds me of Vera Z., but lacks the quickness. Her forehand has some sting on it, and can hit some winners with it. Serve could use some work.
