Reserrection of the thread requested.

We are entering grass season, and the best place for Elena to rocket up the ranks! We all remember the great run of 2002 at Wimbledon, and we all hope for something similar this year (maybe better :bolt: ). Its certainly when she really has a chance.

She is playing the $25K Surbiton event, and is playing the qualifier (former Top 200 player) Seda Noorlander of Netherlands, and might meet Akiko Morigami in the second round .

Her quarter:

(7) Elena Tatarkova UKR vs Q Leanne Baker NZL
Carly Gullickson USA vs Lilia Osterloh USA
SR Elena Baltacha GBR vs Q Seda Noorlander NED
Kelly Liggan IRL vs (2) Akiko Morigami JPN

Baltacha is having a good start to week so far as she qualified for the $75K Poitiers maindraw beating:

Maria Geznenge 46 64 60
Michelle Gerards 62 62
Mervana Jugic-Sulkic 46 62 75 (I think that was the score)

She plays a wildcard Andrieux in the first round and could play Santangelo or Cohen Aloro in the 2nd round! An overall good draw! Even with a loss tomorrow, which won't happen ;), Bally is back in the top 200! :bounce: :woohoo: Keep up the good form Bally!

Flying Baltacha storms into 3rd round
Wed 19 Jan, 9:07 AM

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Elena Baltacha will have to change her travel plans for the fifth time in little more than a week after the qualifier became the first British woman in 14 years to reach the third round of the Australian Open.

On Wednesday she recovered from a slow start to beat Stephanie Cohen-Aloro of France 2-6 6-3 6-1 and emulate Clare Wood's achievement in reaching round three in 1991.

But despite being assured of at least A$46,250 (18,820 pounds), she insists she will not be looking for an upgrade on the flight home.

"No, no, I'll just stick to the economy, stick to the toilet in the back," she told reporters at Melbourne Park. "That will be fine."

The 21-year-old Baltacha, who reached the third round at Wimbledon in 2002, has suffered from health problems in recent years, including a liver disorder which threatened to end her career.

Her efforts in Melbourne will boost her ranking from its current position of 185 and Baltacha said she will have nothing to lose in round three, where she meets Italian 15th seed Silvia Farina Elia.

"Now I can kind of really relax and just have fun," she said.

MORE DEDICATED

"Because the draws that I've had, I knew I had a chance, I've had a sniff. I know that it's going to be much tougher now, so I can really just relax and just go for it and see what happens."

Baltacha moved to Britain at the age of five having been born in Ukraine to sporting parents.

Her mother, Olga was a world-ranked pentathlete while her father, Sergei, played football for Dynamo Kiev and Ipswich Town.

A back injury set back her progression in 2003, but against Cohen-Aloro, she showed the form and resilience of a player well above her present ranking.

"I've been working very hard for the last year," she said.

"I'm probably much more dedicated than I ever have been. I'm enjoying the atmosphere here, I'm enjoying the way the courts are playing, the way the balls are going, and I'm digging deep. And I'm just managing to win the matches."

Baltacha run ends in heavy defeat

Elena Baltacha bowed out of the Australian Open in the third round after a heavy defeat by 15th seed Silvia Farina Elia.
The British qualifier was outclassed 6-1 6-0 by her Italian opponent.

Baltacha beat higher-ranked players in rounds one and two but world number 19 Farina Elia, playing in her 50th Grand Slam event, proved a step too far.

The 21-year-old Briton committed 32 errors and dropped serve six times in a match lasting less than an hour.

She later admitted she had been taught a lesson by Farina Elia.

"I got my arse kicked and that's the only way I am going to improve," she said.

Whatever I threw at her she got

"I knew it was going to be really tough but I didn't know how well she was going to play.

"Whatever I threw at her she got. The games were tight but she was just too good - but that is the level I want to get to."

Farina Elia goes on to play the winner of a later match between Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova and China's Li Na.

Meanwhile, Baltacha has the consolation of picking up £18,800 in prize money - almost as much as she won in the whole of 2004.

The British number one will also move inside the world's top 130 for the first time in her career.

Baltacha plays Magui Serna in the first round of quallies for Miami. Interesting draw could be tough but Serna is in a slump. IF Baltacha wins that, she could play Stephanie Cohen Aloro in the final round of qualifying! Winnable section for Bally but it could also be really hard as all the players in this section are good when on form!

The original quallie draw appears to be wrong. They changed it and Bally has a more difficult opener against Stephanie Foretz followed by a showdown with either Katerina Bohmova or Selima Sfar. Baltacha can still definitely qualify as there are no particularly good players in this section!

Bally has a golden opportunity :)

She drew one of the weaker qualifiers (no offence), and if she faces Dementieva in round 2 I think she has every chance of beating her. I say this not to be biased, but simply because Dementieva is not 100% right now, and grass is her weakest surface. Bally performs the best tennis of the year at Wimbledon - motivation is what drives Bally to do well. I think she can possibly reach the last 16 :) :wavey:

This is a shame, it would be nice for her to get some confidence before the US Open qualies...

Yes I think, she didn´t play the last tournaments, because she were 1oo numbers higher than the 2 seeded player and in Lexington not

 With Elena you can never predict a result. I think shes gonna be the sort of player who has fairly unremarkable spells, followed by a huge leap. I have a feeling she'll have a good spell soon.

Nooo this is terrible :sobbing:

When was the last time she won a match???

According to the WTA site, it was at Birmingham where she beat a top 100 player...(Bondarenko)

Then she lost to a qualifier ranked 2 spots below her...

She won a total of 2 matches on grass (including a win at the Surbiton Challenger), but before that she hadn't won a match since Miami qualifying...
