treufreund Jun 11th, 2002, 06:54 PM This was on ESPN.com. I am glad that Vivi and Paola won. I am NOT a Renee Stubbs fan and Lisa Raymond whom I like has gotten on my nerves with her nationalistic, ethnocentric American bias. I am glad Martina and Anna gave them a good spanking in Australia and that they lost to the classy Argentine and Spaniard. :D
Double defense: Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez won their second consecutive French Open doubles title Sunday, beating the top-ranked team of Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs, 6-4, 6-2.
"We've played together for 10 years,'' Spain's Ruano Pascual said. "We know every move on the court. I know what Paola is going to do, and it's the same for her.''
Ruano Pascual and Suarez seized control in the sixth game of the second set when Stubbs took a dive into the stands, but missed a return, making the score 4-2.
"That was the truly crucial moment in the match,'' Suarez said.
When an Stubbs angrily questioned a call in the next game, the crowd booed and hissed.
Spurred on by the crowd, Suarez and Ruano Pascual dominated the last two games of the set.
Ruano Pascual and Suarez improved to 5-4 against Raymond and Stubbs.
Raymond and Stubbs have won three Grand Slam doubles titles, including last year's U.S. Open.
The women's doubles championship was Spain's first victory of the day.
Ruano Pascual was kissing her trophy for photographers just as countrymen Albert Costa and Juan Carlos Ferrero were preparing to play the first all-Spanish final since 1998. Costa won 6-1, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3.
Monica_Rules Jun 11th, 2002, 07:01 PM
Well she can get a little angry during matches!
but Paris crowda again silly people!
treufreund Jun 11th, 2002, 07:04 PM You are right. I don't wish that on anyone. The French crowds are of course notorious. Renee does seem nice sometimes and I like Lisa but Lisa says some very dumb things sometimes. Renee just seems like a sour puss sometimes. But she did not deserve the booing.
Bright Red Jun 11th, 2002, 07:12 PM I was there, and I don't really remember the booing and hissing as being that bad. I think the crowd (which was very small, btw) contained many Spanish-speaking folks. I heard little french being spoken around me and at the entrances I was at.
I don't know which of the American players are which. But I will say that the slimmer of the Americans seemed to have a rough attitude. She seemed very bossy to her team mate. She never smiled, and she cussed a lot. Also, they never high-fived or celebrated points. That was very different from the dynamic between Virginia and Paolo's. They really seemed to be enjoying themselves, and they gave each other high fives whether they won or lost. I was actually rooting for them to win, myself.
Iconoclast Jun 11th, 2002, 07:23 PM The slimmer American is the Australian Rennae Stubbs.
Sonja Jun 11th, 2002, 07:27 PM Bright Red, Rennae (the slim one) is an Aussie; Lisa's the American.
I know Raymond & Stubbs really wanted this one so it doesn't surprise me that things were tense.
Rennae plays with a lot of fire and I think that is her personality on and off the court (which I find amusing). She does perhaps go a bit too far sometimes.
As for the French Crowd, I don't care much for their behavior. If they boo and hiss one of their own, I don't put much stock in any of their actions/reactions.
Obviously Paola and Virginia were the better team that day and took home the trophy. I congratulate them.
Bright Red Jun 11th, 2002, 07:35 PM Thanks Iconoclast and Sonja. I thought they were both Americans. Oh well, I didn't mean to come down hard on Rennae.
It must be a cultural things--maybe that's how Stubbs focuses.
VSFan1 aka Joshua L. Jun 11th, 2002, 10:41 PM I don't necessarily agree with the nationalistic, ethnocentric American bias. But I do agree that she is not very nice.
While at Fed Cup, I was on the same elevator with her and said hi, and she barely said anything (this was after they lost the tie). And I said, "Sorry about the results." and she said in a condescending voice, "Well, you have days like these."
ttaM Jun 11th, 2002, 11:12 PM and Lisa Raymond whom I like has gotten on my nerves with her nationalistic, ethnocentric American bias.
LISA!!!! MY GOD I LOVE YOU EVEN MORE!!! PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
CoryAnnAvants#1 Jun 11th, 2002, 11:16 PM I actually think Raymond is one of the nicer players on tour. I saw her at a WTT event and she was incredibly friendly to me after the match. She signed my autograph, and when I told her she was screwed out of the Olympics, she started laughing and thanked me. She even gave me advice about how to approach playing tournaments! She also waited patiently while I fished for my camera and took a few shots w/her. I'm sure after you lose a Fed Cup tie, particularly after what just happened, you don't feel like being social. Everyone has their bitch/bastard days. That was probably one of hers.
treufreund Jun 12th, 2002, 12:40 AM I think Lisa is nice too actually I just don't agree with some of her utterances. But I still root for her. GO LISA!
Celeste Jun 12th, 2002, 01:23 AM From what I actually saw during a match from FCC, the crowd does not like them. But the match I saw, they were playing ASV and Daniela. ASV seemed well-liked by the FCC crowd and everyone was still in awe of Daniela's performance at Indian Wells. Raymond and Stubbs are not good singles players (nobody seems to care Lisa Raymond is in the Top 30 or sometimes 20 in singles), I feel most "doubles crowds" root for the best singles player there. Neither Lisa nor Stubbs really qualifies as "good" singles players. Lisa seems to think of herself as a good singles player, but I think she overestimates herself a little. And some women sitting in front of me at Amelia stated the whole crowd was against them in their first-round doubles loss to Amanda Coetzer and Steck (?), though Sonya or Linnie said that wasn't accurate.
They don't seem really popular from what I've seen, but that doesn't make them boo-worthy! :(
PamShriverRockz Jun 12th, 2002, 01:27 AM Lisa and Ren are cool, I think Ren is very passionate and hates losing and often she is a little mis-understood. ;) I think they make a great partnership as they complement eachother very well.
I congratulate Vivi and Paola on their doubles win. And I think Lisa & Ren will be the ones to beat at Wimbledon.
Sonja Jun 12th, 2002, 02:33 AM Celeste, I said "Wow I'm shocked about the Lisa & Rennae thing. I was there all week and people crowded around them watching them practice and tons of kids got their autograph. I was impressed with Lisa, as she stopped many different times to pose for a picture with fans and sign autographs."
I didn't get to see the Coetzer/Steck, Raymond/Stubbs match because it was played at night. My comment wasn't made to dispute anything you said. I was truly surprised that they weren't well received by the crowd, that's all.
Celeste Jun 12th, 2002, 02:44 AM No, I didn't mean anything bad, it's just this woman told me the whole crowd was against them, and that didn't jive with your recollections of the tournament from when they practiced. I trust your recollections more than the woman there, I mean, lol, we shared the finals performance memories pretty well. Your posts are the best.
Hey, do you want to share a box next year? I'm trying to con Ronnie into next year, they have boxes for 2-4. Are you into a 4-person box, that might defray the cost. I'll pm you...I mean, I'm not a Girl Scout, but I'm not a terrible person either. Think about it, we could pool our money and get kick-ass seats!
Irish Jun 12th, 2002, 02:45 AM I was at the match at AI. I thought both teams had their share of the crowd cheering for them. I just remember in the third set when Steck/Coetzer, were down 5-6 and there was a horrible call by the ump after Ren alerted him. Even most of the crowd saw it was a horrible call against Amanda and Jessica. That is when I noticed a lot more cheering for Amanda and Jessica. Lisa and Ren were stunned at the change of the *atmosphere* of the crowd. And of course, Coetzer/Steck won....guess justice paid off for them.
tennischick Jun 12th, 2002, 03:41 AM Congrats to Paola Suarez and her partner. i had no idea they've been playing together for 10 years. that is awesome. and to be 5-4 against the top team is...well...superb!!! :) :)
Sam L Jun 12th, 2002, 04:28 AM Congrats to Paola and Virginia. I'm glad they won again! :D
But how do the Frence hiss? is it really loud? like a snake? or like a cat?
stubbsy71 Jun 12th, 2002, 10:30 AM Rennae is really nice. I contacted her in Paris and asked her if she could get me and Mel tickets for the final. Without any hesitation she said yes and left us invitation/guest passes.
The crowd booed at one point of the match and at one point only. Rennae was serving and it was called out. The umpire got down and checked the mark and called it good. Rennae indicated to the lines person to take his/her sun glasses off, perhaps a little sarcastically I admit, but I think she had a right to do so. The crowd didn't like it and so booed her. Rennae replayed the serve and lost it.
At the end of the match Rennae actually apologised to us for losing. She was obviously very upset, tears in her eyes, but yet at the same time was concerned we had travelled all that way and she was unable to give us the victory we wanted.
Benny Jun 12th, 2002, 10:31 AM The french like nobody, LOL they are sooooooooo picky!
Jakeev Jun 12th, 2002, 11:10 AM Well I was kind of wondering how popular Stubbs/Raymond were. I am not sure they will go down as the most popular top-ranked doubles teams to play the game but I do feel sorry for them that they lost the title.
They struggled from round one when they beat doubles legends you-know-who and well, it's got to be heartbreaking to make it all the way to the final and then get beat so handily.
Good luck to them in England
Sonja Jun 12th, 2002, 01:39 PM "I mean, I'm not a Girl Scout, but I'm not a terrible person either."
Good, cause I couldn't share seats with a Girl Scout. They just don't fit into my master plan ;)
I'm checking on the situation; sent you a pm. :D
Aloysius Jun 12th, 2002, 04:14 PM What has Lisa said in the past that was so bad?
mboyle Jun 12th, 2002, 04:28 PM Lisa Raymond and Renee Stubbs are my second favorite doubles team after Anna k and Martina Hingis. Who cares about any other team?
The Legend Jun 12th, 2002, 09:45 PM Lisa and Rennae are two of the most personable people on the tour - they're incredibly generous of themselves to their fans and give their all on the court - what more can you ask of a tennis player? As for Rennae's behaviour...what did she do wrong? She was right! The ball was good! If Martina - either Martina come to that; Navratilova or Hingis, were to indicate that a line judge should perhaps remove their sunglasses in poor light conditions no-one would say a word! I think Rennae carries a reputation she doesn't deserve; people look for 'tantrums' and end up making a mountain out of a mole-hill.
And as for not 'high-fiving' as much as Vivi and Paola - that's untrue. They're not as demonstrative as a lot of teams, but there's always a pat on the back, a 'low-five' or a simple "good shot" or "well done". And there's a difference between 'bossiness' and clear, assertive communication and instruction. If Rennae was 'bossy or 'mean' as has been suggested, do you really think Lisa would still stick with her? It's a dynamic that works, and works well.
They're a great team, they play a great game and they're great girls.
