" Ho scrub my feet!"
The new diva on tour :o Vera Dushevina is getting to be in a really bad mood after waiting 3 hours to play!
" I got my butt and all my stuff here 3 hours ago and the tour director won't let us go and play! I'm so ready to kick some arse after my sour defeat at Wimbledon and just standing around here isn't helping my situation. My legs got so tired I had to call the personal trainer to massage my legs due to fatigue :o This better not affect my match or else I'll be very angry!"
Dushevina plays Ani in her first round match and then will play Silvia Farina-Elia which should be an intriguing encounter!

Highlandman Jul 24th, 2006, 02:30 PM Gallovits beats Top-30 Mirza
http://photo910.tripod.com/gkopihtm/gkopi/g1153g3.jpg
7-6,4-6,7-5 won Edina Gallovits from Romania in the first round Miami against Indian's Sania Mirza.
Q: Edina, you won today over a player who is ranked in the Top-30, what do you feel after this?
EG: Yeah, well, it was a great match today. Sania is a fighter, I saw she was very determined in the whole match against me, so I know: I must give all, besides I couldn't win. She played very well, but I was a little bit better and so I won.
Q: In Wimbledon you lost to Farina-Elia in a close match, did you learned from this match?
EG: Sure. It was a great match in Wimbledon against Farina-Elia, but there I noticed I must improve my game more and more. Now I have the prize for my hard work.
Q: What did you improved and where?
EG: After my out in doubles and the mixed, where I lost in the second round, I voyaged to Indianapolis and there I worked very hardly with my coach. I feel me now better in my backhand and my volleys are better, too! On friday I came on to Miami.
Q: What do you reach in Miami?
EG: Difficult to say, I played very well now against Mirza and now I will play against Na Li, who won over Schnyder, there she played very well said somebody to me. Sure, it will be very difficult, but I think I can beat her. It's pity when the tournament is over very early for me, because I feel me so good. Before the tournament I said to me: Minimum 3 wins.
Q: Do you have any problems?
EG: Not really, in the match against Mirza I had on the beginning of the second set a bit problems with my left foot, but this is not seriously.
Q: In doubles you play with Meghann Shaughnessy, what do you think about it?
EG: I like her very much and we are good team, in Wimbledon we played very well together and now again - I think and hope.
Q: What do you say about Miami?
EG: I love it. It's so beautiful. On saturday I visited all the sights etc. - it was great, it's the third time to be here, but the last time was 3 years ago and there just 4 days.
Q: It's very hot here, is it a problem for you?
EG: No, why? I live in Atlanta and there it is very hot, too. And on my birthplace Timişoara is it in summer the same. So I like hot temperaturs for playing, but a lot of the other girls hate it.
Q: Are you often in Timişoara?
EG: Not really, it's a pity. There are a lot of friends of me, the last time was before Wimbledon 3 days. But I love my birthplace, all the people there are so nice and the Timisoara Cathedral and the park there is a place where I love it to be.
http://www.gemission.org/Romania/Romania/photos/Timisoara%20Orthodox%20Cathedral.jpg
Q: Are you very popular there?
EG: Everybody knows me and knows who I am. But it's a city with 330.000 people. After my carrer I'm going to Timisoara back, but I don't know. There are so many great places on the earth and at the moment for tennis in Atlana much better than Timisoara. When I'm in Timisoara and people see my, they say often sth like: "Hey Edina, how are you and good luck in your next tournaments" and other things like that. Nobody is brash to me.
Q: Do you like it to talk with fans?
EG: Yeah. It's nice to speak with them. At the tournaments the people search always the big stars and I'm for the most people very unknown, but sometimes somebody comes to me and says: "Can you give me an autograph, can you please make a photo with me" etc. - that's great and often I talk a bit longer with this people when I have more time. After my match against Mirza today it was very nice, a lot of people wanted an autograph from me and with this win today I think I have more fans than before - that makes me very happy.
Q: How would you you characterize?
EG: You ask questions to me *smiles...I'm a very blithely human who like reading, listening to music, meeting friends. I love it to laugh. A big hobby of me is fashion, I love it to go into fashionshops and looking for new styles or outifts. Every tournament or every second I have a new outfit, so I think I'm a bit crazy, too ;) . However somebody is not aboveboard to me and I notice it, I can be very angry, but normally I'm a person who enjoys the life.
Q: Thanks Edina for your time.
EG: No problem, I hope we will see us again after my match against Li, I try my best ;)
Q: Good luck to you!

Magdalena Maleeva wins her opening match against Maria Sharapova at Miami. She needed more than 2 hours to overcome the young promising Russian in 3 sets 5-7 6-4 7-6(5). Her next opponent is Nicole Vaidisova, who defeated Klara Koukalova in straight sets. Maggie leads the head-to-head 2-1, but Nicole won their last encounter at Birmingham in 2 sets.
Last year, Maggie reached the 3rd round, losing to her nemesis Alicia Molik. Let's hope she'll save all the points this year. Good luck Maggie!

*Jool* Jul 24th, 2006, 05:52 PM Jeyaseelan : "I'm in love"
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/joolov/JeyaseelanSonya2.jpg
Bad mood day for Jeyaseelan .Like in season 1 , Jeyaseelan was upset first round of Miami .
Sonya Jeyaseelan, the world number 7 , could not imagine a worst result in Miami . She fell badly to Australian Alicia Molik in straight sets, showing little motivation on court, once again . Jeyaseelan had pretty harsh words about herself after the match , but is willing to regroup with the help of her new lover , Austrian ATP player Oliver Marach. " I am not disappointed of the loss because I played one of my worst match of this season. You can't expect to win when you're not competitive , and today Alicia was and deserved the win. After the first set , I could not find any solution to challenge her power, especially her serve . I totally tanked the second set , I didn't want to be here anymore, I had absolutely no fun on court today . This happened already on clay , but when the grass season arrived, I was feeling much more motivated and better on court. Today was definitely a day i should have stayed in bed. But what is important is being happy , and I found happiness with Oliver . He can't be here this week because he plays on the men's tour, and maybe the reason is I miss him , you know , I had a week off last week and I went to Forrest Hills with him for the Fed Cup semifinals to spend time with the other girls. It's hard to get back to work . Hopefully I'll be ready for the US Open where I will start to defend lots of points. Right now, I don't deserve to be so close to top 5. I'm an average top 20 player , and that is painful because I thought I would go on playing good tennis after Australia , and I had several goals that seem now pretty unreachable . maybe I should stick to have 3rd rounds of tournaments as a goal , but that won't make me a top player anymore , I know I am worth better , don't know what stopped me from progressing and made me go the wrong way . Hopefully I can sort it all out and have better results soon ."
new-york Jul 24th, 2006, 08:23 PM Solid Gibson showed up today...
(12)A.Gibson (USA) def. J.Henin-Hardenne (BEL) 6-3 6-2
http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/2192/altheasitvl9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Looking at the rankings, this win of Gibson is not much of a surprise, yet with the tour getting tougher & tougher with some strong newscomers & her game on stand by, Gibson has to enjoy."I would love to have those scorelines more often. It was a good match, i think she played well, her forehand was a lil wild sometimes. But she got a tremendous backhand and with mine being my best shots lately, it was a backand battle, i loved that."
& it is true that it is not Henin-Hardenne lack of competition which gave Gibson the win, but really good stats."I've been serving well, really hard. My serve down the middle has been working well today, good precision and few unforced, that's the thing."
Next Opponent is A-L.Groenefeld (GER)."She does hit hard and can be impressive. I'm always curious to play new people, kinda anxious cause you have to adjust during the match to a game you're discovering but that sounds good. I hope i'll keep the balls in like today."

Q. Congratulations Lina, how do you feel?
A. Yeah, it’s really nice to get a win, considering I haven’t won a singles match since Holland. It really helps boost your confidence.
Q. This is also your first win on a hard court. Any words about that?
A. Finally! When I first started I didn’t really know what I was doing, but by the clay court season I had found my style and my coach and I were working well together.
Q. Has your success in the mixed doubles helped you in singles?
A. Mixed is a lot different because you can feel more relaxed on court and have a good time, whereas with singles you have to be more serious. It does help though, when you have some situations, because I used to get really angry and down on myself, but I am trying to just think ‘what would I do if I was playing mixed?’ and it sometimes helps.
Q. Now, about the match. You were struggling with your serve at the start, why was that?
A. I think I was just a little anxious. When you haven’t won for a long time you become really self critical and question your talent. However, as soon as I won a couple of games on serve I just told myself to start to attack more.
Q. You saved a couple of set points as well, does that help?
A. Definitely. Whenever you save a set point in a tight situation it boosts you and it also puts more doubt into your opponents mind as to whether they can close it out.
Q. You upped your game in the second set, how did you do that?
A. When you already have a set you need to keep applying the pressure, but your opponent is thinking ‘I need to go on for another couple of sets,’ and they have to up their game. As a result they may start making more errors and that is what Nadia did. I kept getting the ball back, waiting for her to make an error or give me a chance to attack, especially with my backhand.
Q. Did you know that Nadia was going to retire at the end of the match?
A. I had no idea. It really shocked me when I heard her say it. I hope she comes back as she is a good player, but if she doesn’t I hope she is successful in whatever she does.
Q. You now play the number 9 seed. Ana Ivanovic. Any thoughts?
A. No pressure on me, I might as well just go out there and play my game as well as I can. She is a good player.
Buitenzorg Jul 24th, 2006, 11:02 PM Molik, finally wins :)

Nadia Petrova from Russia has announced during a press conference that her career on LTT is officially coming to an end effective immediately.
"I'm no longer enjoying myself. The long hours of training and traveling have taken a toll on my mental and physical state of mind. I am going to go ahead and continue with my studies."

On a more serious note:
I would like to thank the organizers of LTT, especially Drew. I had a really fun time playing every week. I'm going through a rather difficult time in my life at the moment. I don't rule out a comeback, but at the moment I have lost interest in pretty much everything. Thanks to everyone for your nice comments.

When Maria Sharapova stepped out on court to play her opening match against World #4 Magdalena Maleeva no one knew it would turn out to be the epic it became. The match which lasted over 2 1/2 Hours was won by Maleeva 5-7 6-4 7-6 both players had more winners than errors Sharapova 69 winners to 48 errors Maleeva 41 winners to only 21 errors
" I played great but just finished at the wrong time i feel really dissapointed to have lost such a tight match especially when i led 5-3 in the final set i keep making oppurtunities for myself but choking in the end making to many unforced errors. I am always losing tiebreaks and its upsetting me" Sharapova said right after the match clearly upset with herself
"I feel like i need to keep pushing and i will finally get there i know ive got the game but its producing it at the right time when i need to thats the problem for me"
Maria plays with good friend Jennifer Capriati in the doubles today and face the team of Meghann Shaughnessy and Edina Gallovits in the first round.

Magdalena Maleeva defeats Nicole Vaidisova in 3 sets 6-3 6-7(8) 6-3 to reach the 3rd round at Miami. She is now to meet Martina Hingis. She reached that stage last season too, and then lost to Alicia Molik. But things have changed since last year: at that time Maggie was #47 and now, she is #4. Her opponent, Martina, is a player she usually defeats in long tough matches. The two girls will probably offer us a great match once again.
In doubles Sonya and Maggie won their first round match against Sania Mirza and Ai Sugiyama in 2 sets 6-4 7-5. The Roland Garros finalists will meet Jelena Dokic and Mary Pierce in the second round. Good luck girls!

Europe rocks Jul 25th, 2006, 08:32 PM Serb seed shocked by Russian
http://www.tennis-ontheline.com/pics/05ao/05ozlina%20krasnoroutskaya02.jpg
Serbian ninth seed Ana Ivanovic was stunned in the second round of the American Express Challenge in Miami by little known Russian Lina Krasnoroutskaya.
Krasnoroutskaya, better known as Dushevina’s doubles partner, came into the match as a heavy underdog, having not won a match on a hard court prior to the tournament, but she did not look out of place. Heavy serving from the Serb saw her hold serve comfortably in the first set and a late break gave her the first set 6-4.
Despite losing the first set, Krasnoroutskaya remained persistent through the second set, continuing to try and hit hard and move in when given the chance. At 4-4, Krasnoroutskaya had to move to try and keep in the match and even though she wasted 5 break points in the game the Russian took advantage and managed to hold to level the match.
By the third set both women were trying to find a way to win. Ivanovic started to hit harder and blast a way past her Russian opponent, whereas Krasnoroutskaya tried to exploit the poor movement of the number 9 seed. Once again they were locked at 4-4 with Ivanovic serving, but history repeated itself as the Serb conceded her service game with a double fault to allow Krasnoroutskaya to serve for a place in the third round and a meeting with fifth seed Elena Bovina.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40744000/jpg/_40744085_ivanovic.jpg
“Oh my, I’m shaking after that!” Krasnoroutskaya beamed. “Ana is such a good, strong player and to record a victory like this gives me so much confidence. I wish her all the success in the future.” On her meeting with Bovina she commented “she is also very good, very tough. Some people dislike her attitude, but that is just how she is. Hopefully it will be a good match.”
After securing victory Krasnoroutskaya was back out on court again in the doubles. Along with her best friend Vera Dushevina they recorded a nervy 6-4 3-6 6-3 victory over Maret Ani and Jelena Jankovic. Earlier on, Dushevina was a surprise loser, as she fell in three sets to Indonesian Angelique Widjaja.

Gibson prevailed in her match against young German Groenefeld in two tiebreaks showing experience matters. "One of those matches you're really exhausted after, i'm glad i stayed calm in the crucial moments and prevailed in the tiebreaks. I usually don't, my records in tiebreaks is pretty poor."
Gibson enjoyed a win in doubles too, with french top yougnster Tatiana Golovin."Good match, we were having fun. That's the key for us, if we don't laugh together on court, that's bad. Doubles is really relaxing. I think our behaviour might distract the opponents, we are always talking. :laughter:"
next is Molik from Australia, who defeated one of Althea's best friend on tour, Indian Sonya Jeyaseelan in the first round."Of course id like to win for her too, but Alicia has been really good and dominating her two previous matched, i don't know, i never played her. I know Maggie has troubles with Alicia's game. Not a good sign for me."

TomTennis Jul 25th, 2006, 11:30 PM Davenport swings back into action in Miami
http://www.sportinglife.com/pictures/general/allsportdavenportla.jpg
After losing her Wimbledon crown to polish Marta Domachowska in the quater-finals, Davenport headed home and prepared for the US hardcourt season. She is in a strong position, after having to take down two of her fellow compatriots, first storming past Chanda Rubin 6-4 6-4, then surviving a tough test against Serena Williams, winning 6-4 5-7 7-5.
Davenport next faces french woman Mary Pierce for a place in the quater-finals of the Tier 1 A event in Miami.
aisha Jul 25th, 2006, 11:41 PM http://www.mary-pierce.org/Pacific_Life_Open_2005/l1369746.jpg
Fresh off Fed Cup disappointment, France's Mary Pierce has taken it out on the competition. In the first round, atoned for her third set tiebreak nightmare of Fed Cup, winning in straight set tiebreaks over doubles partner Jelena Dokic. One day later, Pierce claimed a bigger scalp in 14th seeded Anastassia Rodionova 6-4, 6-3. Pierce and Dokic later teamed up with Dokic for a 6-3, 6-3 win over V. Williams/Azarenka team.
With teething and colicky babies at home, and a devastating loss, Pierce has the right to be in an ornery mood. However, she insists that's no the case. "You know, I am not happy I lost to Patty Schnyder, but you know. I tried. That's all I can do. It's only my first year, and I can see where I need to improve. I have no doubts my talent will break out soon. I have a finals appearance under my belt, so I have the future to look forward to."
The future could be now if she can get past no. 2 seed Lindsay Davenport, who defeated Pierce in three tough sets on grass several weeks ago.
AlexSydney Jul 26th, 2006, 02:38 AM IS THERE ANYONE ELSE LIKE BOVINA?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v288/cata3003/Elena%20Bovina/ElenaBovina2.jpg
Look at the stand; it’s empty except one guy in mid 40’s who is coaching Angela Haynes. Was it all about Elena Bovina’s behaviour attitude or the match is one of most predictable since Bovina owned Haynes in the series of meeting and so far it’s 4 to 0 as of today. Today, we are going to have asked her some questions.
Q. First of all, I want to say congratulations on your domination match today against Angela Haynes.
A. Thanks. I also want to say thanks for interviewing me because I haven’t done that since French Open. I know I’m not exactly popular out of all people.
Q. Er, okay. No worries, Elena. So, I want to ask you a questi…
A. Yeah, I want to say something bit more as well. I want to say apology to my sister for hit her face last week. I really feel bad afterward. I want to make it up to her if she gives me the chance. I just want to let her know I’ll always love her no matter what.
Q. Er, that’s all right. I don’t mean to rude but I rather you don’t want to share your persona…
A. Oh, I forget something else to add as well!
Q. Stop it, for god’s sake!
A. What? What did I said something wrong?
Q. No, it’s just that… Look, we’re here for interview, okay?
A. Yeah, and?
Q. This is no personal matter, understood?
A. Oh, right. Then, fuck you; get me out of here now!
Q. Huh? Oh, man! She’s a difficult person ever I’ve met!

An Interview with Elena Dementieva
Miami R32: (6) Dementieva d. Dubois 6-2 7-5
MODERATOR: Questions for Miss Dementieva, please.
QUESTION: Elena, you're doing a nice job of keeping the matches pretty short this week. Can you tell us how you're doing it?
ELENA DEMENTIEVA: Oh wow, you know, I guess my matches are some kind of running joke now, no? (smiling) I think it was a pretty good match for me today, you know, yesterday, I mean, I was very unimpressed by Tzvetana's [Pironkova] game. She just like to hit the ball right at me and I just feeling like 'well, are you gunna try and hit a winner or wait for me to do it?', you know? I felt like she didn't really play her best. Well, if that was, you know, the best she can do, that's not so good for her.
Stephanie didn't do as well, you know, as I was expecting she would do. The girls in the locker room are all telling me she's a tough player and she's gunna play a lot of balls back but, you know, this is not true for our match. She played poorly and I'm just feeling very fresh and confident, you know. I guess she didn't play her best tday, for sure.
Q: Are you saying your opponents have lacked the quality you would normally expect?
ED: You know, I didn't know how Tzvetana was playing before yesterday so I can't say really, you know, how she is hitting the ball usually, but she didn't impress me so much. Stephanie wasn't as good as I expected. She needs to work on her game, maybe, to get to that next level, yeah.
Q: You're scheduled to meet Kristen Flipkens, who's ranked eleventh right now. Discuss this match with us.
ED: I don't have much to discuss. You know, I'm always gunna be playing my tennis no matter what. I hit the ball hard, run fast, and I just try as much as I can to, I mean, just to try to win. I don't know how this girl is ranked so high. I haven't heard of her too much. She's ranked so low, you know, and then she's almost top ten. I don't know what she did, you know, to get so high. Probably a few good runs, I think she had a nice Wimbledon or something. She can play, I mean, I have to give her the credit. I just don't really know much about her. I hope she's some good competition for me, you know.
Q: You sound quite bitter today, if I may say so. Is there any reason for this?
ED: It's kind of, you know, I don't know. This really isn't exactly my favorite thing to do. I mean, I could be taking a shower right now, you know. I'm bored by this whole concept, I guess.
Q: That's harsh. Who are your friends on the tour?
ED: I'm pretty popular, I'd say. The girls I get along best with, you know, usually are Anna-Lena [Groenefeld] and Patty [Schnyder]. I have lots of friends, really. I'm not so bitter because, you know, they don't constantly ask me questions.
Q: Are there any girls you don't get along with?
ED: Uhm, not so much, no. Sometimes I get into arguments with Althea [Gibson] because she has some, I mean, she makes fun of my name. I am not Demented, you know. I like her, though, you know. She's like three hundred and forty, so, you know, she's kind of like a mother figure, I suppose. She's got a great sense of humor and I really admire her. I won my first title over her so, I mean, I will always feel like that is a special moment which I can share with her.
Q: Tell us about doubles. You and your partner Ksenia Palkina are both pretty successful singles players. What's going on in doubles? You had a nice run at Wimbledon, where I believe you reached the semifinals, but other than that, not too much going on there. What's the problem? Do you get along okay?
ED: Oh, yeah, we're great friends, you know. She's a great girl and we usually have a lot of fun. She's been struggling in singles a little this year and, I mean, that's no secret, so I think sometimes it can, you know, carry over into the doubles and she's not in the best of moods. But, I mean, once we get going, we can really be a strong team.
Q: I fear we are out of time, Elena. Thank you for chatting with us.
ED: Yeah, bye.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v460/yeljai/flipper05.jpg
Are you dissapointed Kirsten?
I am yes, also very tired. I wanted to have a week or two off after Wimbledon and Fed Cup. But I decided to play this week, even coachless for a while.
You had never played Elena before, what are your impressions now?
I saw her against Stephanie the round before. And she moves very well, hits the ball hard. I knew it was not gonna be easy.
Once again you had to play a tie break!
Yes, I want to have shorter sets now you know. I have trouble with my serves at the end of sets. I will work on it in the next few days.
Are you staying around?
Yes Maggie, Althea (she needs me for her hair), and Sonya/Maggie are still in the draw so I will just cheer loud for them.
You have made a high jump in the rankings recently, how do you feel about it?
Well, it's more pressure you know. People expect more from me now and although I'm happy to do well, I don't like pressure. But I try. Next week I am not sure but I might play the higher tier tournament for the first time, that is exciting!
Thank you Kirsten!
Thanks.

http://tennis.info/images/PalmBeach3/Gallovits0337.jpg
7-6,2-6,4-6 was the score in singles at the end for Tatiana Golovin against Edina Gallovits, who played her first R16-Match ever.
"It's a pity that all is over now in Miami, I had a good form and I felt me well. I was so optimistic before this match, but I know that she's a great player with great shots. In the second set I had no chance against her and she played her best tennis. The third was close, but she played a bit and is the winner, because she played a bit better than me.
I won two matches here, that's good and I'm very optimistic for the future. I saw here I can keep up with very good players. After my match I was so sad and I cried, but now I saw that my result here was very good and I can be content with me. I was happy to see that some people gave me their support, that was great for me.
I lost also in the doubles with Meghann, again in the 3 sets, but we played very well and we won our first round together, so I think we are a good time and we can reach a lot in the future.
I stay here till tomorrow evenig, so I can watch the Quaters and I think it will be very interesting", said Edina Gallovits after her match.

Q- Tremendous first set, the best you played?
A.G- One of the best, for sure. I never started that solid, i've been myself impressed by my own serve. I was definitely speed too. Add to that that she didn't served well at the beggining and you got a bag.
Tasteful.
Q- It seems that you came on court angry, you're usually smiling, sometimes waving..you looked like a cold statue today.
A.G- Yeah, something pissed me off, i received bad news. Personal issue.
Must stress me a lil. Good of i can play tennis like that, there will be something positive about that..
Q- In the second set you seemed shaky to serve for the match at 5-3.A.G- 30all, my serve was clearly out but nobody said anything, so she came to talk with the umpire. That broke something, i was not thinking about anything before that, really just ballbashing, i just had time to realize where i was, i saw the crowd for the first time. A quarterfinal is when the result begins to be good, i didn't do that since the AO, i was thinking too much.
Q- Six consecutive brokes to begin the third set.A.G- Tell me about it. It really was the first who manage to hold has the match in her pocket. 3-3, i don't wanted to go to a tiebreak, anything but that. i got my serve back at the right time. really intense match.
Q- Next is Mary Pierce from France who defeated Davenport.
A.G- Mary has been dangerous from the beggining, her Edina and some other new players, they came and upsetted fast, Mary was competing with the top with some close matches, i noticed. & she defeated Davenport, with is one of the hugest thing on tour. I have to be really fit and ready to run balls back, she is really offensive. Turbo shots.
Q- Would you be still please if you lose tommorow?
A.G- We're here to win matches, we're disappointed when we don't, obviously, but yeah, a quarter in a tier 1 is really cool & encouraging for the points i'll have to defend at Zurich & the USO.

http://www.mary-pierce.org/yec_2005/2005-11-12T225436Z_01_LUC07D-_RTRIDSP_2_SPORT-TENNIS.jpg
The way Frenchwoman Mary Pierce has played this week, you'd never know she'd suffered a crushing defeat the week before. Reeling from her Fed Cup collapse, Pierce has scored the biggest win of her career knocking out no. 2 ranked American Lindsay Davenport 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. She now plays American throwback, no. 12 Althea Gibson for a semifinal berth.
"Something has clicked for me this week. Something I didn't get to do in Fed Cup, it's much more pressure there and unfortunately, I didn't handle it well enough. I knew I had it in me this week. Maybe it's the laid-back environment here in Miami. I just decided to play a little...smarter. Lindsay and I had a tough first round match several weeks ago. I lost 7-5 in the third. I took something away from that and it helped this match. Lindsay's a tough customer. A little streaky at times, but she's still a top player, no doubt. Althea's playing good tennis right now. I don't really know her that well, but I did taste an upside-down pineapple cake she made. It was a little too sweet for my taste, but it was enjoyable."

Cat's Pajamas Jul 27th, 2006, 07:16 AM Lina and Vera Set Their Sights on First Title!
http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/629/12003-panpacific3.jpg
Vera Dushevina and Lina Krasnoroutskaya won their quarterfinal doubles match today knocking out world number 1's Kim Clijsters and Angela Haynes 7-6(6) 7-6(6) in a very close straight set affair. Lina seemed a bit down aboutr her earlier loss in singles but with some optimistic energy from Vera and some nice hitting of her own Lina made her day a bit better. In the first set Vera and Lina were playing very well really hitting some nice volleys and excellent communication after spoiling a few set points at 5-4 and 6-5 the girls finally grabbed the first set after saving a set point of their own. In the second Clijsters and Haynes experience began to prevail going up 4-1 and 5-2 but Vera and Lina maintained their serves and managed to break Haynes serving at 5-3. At 5-4 Dushevina saved 3 set points in a very long 6 deuce game. After that Krasnoroutskaya and Dushevina confidence and grew and despite some silly errors late in the set they pulled off the win and moved into the semifinals!
Here's what Vera had to say:
" Well I'm just really happy to managed to get that out in straights (laughs) I mean me and Lina were obviously playing very well but Kim and Angela are the world number 1 doubles team and they didn't get there by luck. They weren't letting us get walk away with it without a fight.
Before we went out I talked to Lina who was really down about that tough loss in singles to Palkina. I just said, look you still had a great week out there and you have nothing to be ashamed of. Palkina is a good player and your about to get that big breakthrough. I got it and I know you can too!.
I think Lina is underrated, she has had some solid results and reached the final of a tournament during the clay season. But luckily that singles loss wasn't still in her head while we were playing doubles. I was maybe the more solid player in the first set but she definetely carried me to the win in the second. After getting my serve broke I was just getting made, dumping volleys in the net, not anticipating the shots. But she calmed me down and saved a lot of break points for us. What I really like about her is that she's very mentally tough, she doesn't give up and that definetely show me I can count on her!
We really really really want to win the doubles title here! I think my singles career is good enough right now (laughs) but I don't want to be like known for only that. I love doubles and I want to win lots of tournaments and definetely with Lina. We have to play Golovin and Gibson next round for a spot in the finals and I really want to win so I'm going to give it my heart and soul out there and I know Lina will too because we both want this! I'm not quite sure how many semifinals we've made but I remember our run at Roland Garros so I think we are improving in long strides. We're very determined!"

aisha Jul 28th, 2006, 12:11 AM 'Scary Mary' slides by Gibson
http://www.mary-pierce.org/Acura_2005/2005-08-03T221236Z_01_SAD01D_RTRIDSP_2_SPORT-TENNIS.jpg
Mary Pierce knocked out another seed. She bested American Althea Gibson, seeded 12th, 6-4, 7-5 to advance to her second career semifinal. Pierce grabbed the crucial breaks to wrap up each set with her overpowering groundstrokes. Pierce, always a dangerous floater, finally followed up a big win with a victory.
The dangerous Frenchwoman is the only unseeded player left in the semifinals. She now takes on no. 15 Ksenia Palkina for a spot in the finals. Pierce, whose only lost one set en route to the final four feels confident she can overcome any jitters that may appear during the summer hardcourt swing.
"I know there were few who doubted me after I won against Lindsay, but you know, that doesn't matter. For me to be a tricky player like Althea is an even bigger deal for me. This is my second semifinal and I have been blessed to have been in a final. I feel about as good about my chances as the others in the field. I believe Ksenia beat me earlier this year in Australia. So, I know that I can't have too many lapses against her. I'm all about having fun and learning from my mistakes. On the other hand, I want to win a friggen trophy! (smiles) That's what we all play for, am I right?"
