As sad as it may seem I think I have developed a little crush on Louise Pleming :p
Besides that though (lol),I actully think she's a great commentator & am wondering why Channel 7 hasn't picked her up to announce for them (Surely she is better than Liz "Schmylie" & co?)
As for Steve Robilliard,I can see why he's stuck in ABC land. What an annoying little man he is

my analysis of ABC's Hopman Cup team

Karen Tinge - this lady is too predictable, she repeats phrases like a million times and lacks creativty. Her strong pt is her interviewing skills but she doesn't engage the audience enuf. She has more make-up on this year which in essence helps her look better, she's been a long time host and I expect better :tennis:

Fred Stolle - this old man's attitude isn't going to change, but he's developed to be more personal and interesting recently. I reckon he's a great interviewer on the court, and I'm surprised that his comments actually are the most interesting of all the commentators thus far

Louise Pleming - She actually has some good things to say considering commentating isn't her fulltime profession. She speaks extremely well and has a nice smile and she seems to be having fun, I wish she would be a bit more critical though :D

Geoff Masters - What a joke, he honestly has no appeal whats so ever. I have no idea why ABC choose him, his tennis career is even worse than his commentating one, he always states the obvious and tries to make it interesting, but it aint working :cuckoo:

steve robbillard - He's limited in tennis knowledge you can tell and it was kinda weird with him saying things he realised in the molik match and pleming saying "that's right," he doesn't have the chemistry with the other two commentators. He needs to be more spontaneous and flamboyant, but all ABC ppl lack that dont they?

Peter McNamara - He's good, he's willing to give his opinion and hav a laugh. Glad they choose him bak on the team this year. :clap2:

Peter Wilkins - I luv this man. He's got that energetic voice that is so often missing in TV tennis, he makes thigns that are dull - exciting. Sure he doesn't know that much but his got that humour that can crack u up :rolls: :yeah:

Ace Graphite - hilarious in a pathetic way and overall, a waste of time :o

I think they are all incredibly biased towards the Australians, sure you'd expect them to lean towards them. But I don't even think they have considered Australia may not make the final. All they can do is say how fabulous Australia are, yet realistically they weren't that impressive yesterday. And I think they showed little respect for Mandula, saying things like she doesn't believe she should be there, hello there was only 4 ranks between her and Mollik and she quallified so obtained the right to play, and they were like I don't think anyone thought this match would be this close  Mandula is a good player and is a grand slam QF'ist Molik haasn't been past 3rd round in a slam yet they can't say a bad word about her and barely a nice one about Mandula.
Steve Robilliard is just a sports commentator he only does tennis once a year, he is actually an ok commentator for the netball cause he watches so much of it he knows about all the players and what is going on out there. As for tennis he isn't very good.I think Peter Wilkiins is the best of the lot, sure he knows next to nothing about tennis but unlike the others he doesn't pretend to be an expert. Ace Graphite- get rid of him. A profile of a player would be far better to fill in the time. Louise Plemming is ok but realistically Australia doesn't have any good women commentators, there is her, Kerryn Pratt - who bugs me, and Liz Smylie, who is ok and does know a fair bit, Shriver some times does commentary and is ok. I liked it when Billie Jean Kimg did commentary at AO one year she knew her stuff. I think it is good channel 7 have got Hingis cause beacause for the last few years aussie tv has really needed to find a good female commentator, and I'm pretty sure Hingis will know what she is talking about :p

LOL Spikey, that was great  I have to say I agree with you on most things as well.
As for Ace Graphite,Karen Thighe & Fred Stolle were having a bit of a chuckle about it,but it is SO dodgy lol I agree with Kim,in that I would rather see a player's profile than that waste of space :p
And I am looking forward to seeing what Hingis has to say @ the AO,& I think Louise would be great with alongside her as she seems to be pretty friendly with the other players.
I don't remember BJK,but I do miss Pam's commentating with Ch 7, I think ESPN has nabbed her to announce for them though
What a babble ;)

They should get rid of Ace Graphite
I think they were a little bit biased towards Aussies, but not as much as people like John Newcombe. He even shouts "come on" when Aussies win good points.

Fred Stolle has a boring voice, but hes a good commentator. I find it hilarious how he and Geoff Masters pretend be the players before the match, swing their racquets like old geriatrics while talking about tactics! Thats the funniest part of the day.

Have you guys heard Roy and HG will commentate for some matches at the AO on Channel 7? How pathetic  I might be turning the volume down when they come on. Those guys are not funny in any way, and they know absolutely shit all about tennis. One time they said something like "i cant understand why Hewitt keeps losing to Moya, Moya is quite an ordinary player" I must say they have very high standards if they think a former #1 is ordinary

My favourite commentating duo = Bud Collins & Andrea Jaeger. Why? Because they HATED each other! The chemistry was absolutely pitch perfect. You could feel the tension between them, yet at the same time, their one-liner jibes towards each other made for great listening. Plus, Bud has some great anecdotes to tell and curious facts to share. Andrea is a really positive person who isn't afraid to be critical, and her voice is bright and energetic. ABC needs to bring these two back to commentate for the Hopman Cup. They were fired for their fireworks, but I absolutely LOVED it!!! Channel 7 picked up Bud for a year (I think it was 1996), but he hasn't done anything for them since. Andrea went to Channel 9 for awhile to replace Betsy Nagelsen, but was then later replaced by Kerryn Pratt.

As for the current ABC commentators - you get what you pay for. They are being paid peanuts compared to the other channels. As the head compere, Karen Tighe is receiving 45% less pay than her counterparts on Channels 7 (Bruce McAvaney) and 9 (Ken Sutcliffe). Understandably so, because Bruce and Ken are great at what they do. ABC could never afford either of them. So they have to settle for Karen, who does okay but is basically a mannequin who's allowed to speak. I'm surprised Fred even accepted the job at ABC since he gets paid much less than his stints with Channel 9 and the US network he also works for.

I actually got to meet Geoff Masters casually last year. He used to coach my friend and he came over to say hello to her. He had some interesting stories to share. I guess since we weren't reporters or anything, he felt it was okay to blab about his past clients. He is rather dry in real life too unfortunately. His stories could've been funny but he just couldn't tell them right. Oh well... LOL. That's Geoff. Btw, Geoff is a member of the HC seeding committee so he gets invited to be in Perth anyway. May as well work for the ABC while he's at it. They're not asking for brain surgery... yet. Poor Geoff, always getting the rough end of the stick.

I think Roy and HG are good for a laugh but they wouldn't be good at commentating the tennis unless they did it straight and weren't going for cheap laughs. Who wants to turn on the TV and listen to them joke about Kim's "hello, boys" or Lleyton's "brown eye"? It would make a mockery of Channel 7. Give them a delayed telecast night session or a late night doubles match in the second week, maybe, but definitely not a singles match where people are fully tuned in to watch a serious match between two dogged competitors.

Imagine the look on Johnny Mac's faces when he hears Roy & HG  I don't think they'll last long honestly.I imagine it's some ploy by Ch 7,to advertise some new TV show of theirs.I can't stand them myself & don't see them as having any knowledge of tennis, but then wtf is Sandy Roberts doing there (I despise him  )
As for Andrea Jaeger & Bud Colllins,I had forgotton they used to commentate at the Hopman! I remember Bud used to do the courtside interviews in his colourful shirts now & used to gush about a 15 year old Hingis.I never noticed tension myself, but I did used to think that Andrea had a big crush on Goran Ivanisevic ;)

I've also enjoyed Louise Pleming's commentary. She's definitely better than Liz Smylie, that's for sure... ;)

Karen Tighe is somewhat of an institution now. She's been hosting the HC for years now, and I appreciate her enthusiasm and bubbly personality. :D

Just for the record, she's married to ABC's Glenn Mitchell. :)

BTW, what did you guys think of Shelly Horton, the reporter? :o

Is Shelly the frizzy, red head? I cringed when she swooned at Karol upon the piano top as he sang her U2 :o :o :o
But I do like the Hopman Cup media team as they are all a close group where the Channel 7 line (locals) can get a tad confusing,& they still haven't found a *great* woman commentator after pam Shriver left.............hello Louise??
