Watching TV now and BRAVO is advertising that they are going to show 'The Vanishing'. Not the great Dutch film (Spoorlos) that was rather eerie and frightening but the American version  with Jeff Bridges and Sandra Buttocks  Why oh why did that have to be made when the original is a superior piece of work....strangely enough the same director made both versions

Any other examples of superior movies remade into schlock?

I like sci-fi,and the re-make of The Planet of the Apes left alot to be desired...although I suppose if you're not a sci-fi fan to begin with you wouldn't find the original a classic either. .List of 10 that shouldn't be remade:no remakes please (http://classicfilm.about.com/library/weekly/aa060897.htm)

they are remaking fahrenheit 451... frank darabont directing [shawshank redemption; majestic; green mile].

im looking forward to it.

they are also remaking willy wonka and the chocolate factory. burton directing and johnny depp as charlie [posed to be exactly like the book opposed to the original movie which strayed a bit from the book].

but yeah, agree with ian, planet of hte apes was terrible.

The remake of The Time Machine Machine is horrible. The orginal 1960 George Pal version is a lovely little movie, reasonably true to H.G. Wells's novel (though with a somewhat different spin). The 2002 version is a total travesty.

The 1976 remake of the original 1933 King Kong is not terrible, exactly, but it's pretty bad compared to the original.

It'll be interesting to see what Peter Jackson's 2005 version will be like. Kong rules!

Sitting through Guy Ritchie's remake of Swept Away was torture. Though the original wasn't all that great either.

I thought Abre Los Ojos was very nice too, d-love, but I thought Vanilla Sky was even better. A perfect example of how a good score can make a good film great. Just my opinion of course. :)

I'm with joui on The Time Machine. The hot chick in the jungle getup was nice, but did little to save this piece of crap film. :D

omg, Swept Away was/is horrendous! It made me think maybe Guy smacks Madonna around. I mean what sane person thinks that a woman is going to fall in love with a guy that tortures her in her time of need, hits, and kicks her when she's down. Yeah that was soooo sexy.

Plus neither one of them could act.

I saw this movie a few days ago and wanted to say something about it too. He behaved like an animal - sure she verbally abused him, but that was really too much. I thought they were going to have a twist at the end where it would turn out she was pretending and slept with him just to get him to stop hitting her. But no, they expect us to believe it was true love. Beats me. Pun intended.

Yes, we woman think having a guy kick us in the butt and make us fall face first into the sand is just the most romantic thing we could ever see.

I mean wouldn't we all fall in love with a guy who would do this to us?

The male character in the original version (which was an Italian film I think) was even more abusive, to the point that it's quite disturbing to watch. The male character in Guy's version is actually the son of the actor from the original film. They look exactly alike.

Well then the original was even worse...

I hope Daddy was a better actor. ;)

Madonna's acting was disgusting. That's why when there's a certain type of relationship you shouldn't work together. Guy was probably afraid to tell her she was crap. Did you see their interview on VH1 where she slapped him for what he put her through? Maybe he didn't put her through enough.

Yeah, as talented as Madonna is, it's time she accepted acting is not something she was born to do.

I did see that interview on VH1. I agree Guy was too easy on her. :D

Michael Gordon's Cyrano de Bergerac (1950) re-made by Steve Martin as Roxanne(1987).
Thankfully Gérard Dépardieu redressed the balance in 1990 with a faithful re-re-make.

Can we speak of the Ring briefly? I haven't seen the original, but the new version was damn fine up until the absolutely retarded ending which totally ruined the film. That is all.

Vanilla Sky was the film I most hated last year.

I saw the Ring recently and was not overly amazed although it went okay until the ending. I think I need to get hold of the Japanese version which is apparently a lot better.

Worst remake I guess would be The Italian Job, it should've been left alone.

The Ring is a great film and I prefer the remade version to the original! It's one creepy film, definitely the best horror of 2003! :)

Vanilla Sky is awful in comparison to Abre los Ojos the only better thing I found was Penélope's performance :o
Cameron Díaz wasn't even close to Najwa Nimri
