Me and some of my friends from Uni were invited to a party last night. I didn't go, because I was so tired and didn't feel in the party mood. I just got a call that two of them were killed in an accident. Kim and Nando, two of the coolest people you could know. They only saw the first day of the year. How fucked up is that? At 20 and 21. I'm so fucking mad right now. I'm sure they were drinking, and Kim is not really a drinker. Such needless tragedy. I'm just so sad right now.

Thanks guys for all your kind words. It's really really sad. But the wose part is that I saw Ger's (Kim as we call him) mother and she is really really messed up by this. I've been avoiding her since then. Here's a pic of Kim that the newspaper used for one of his squash matches last month. Me and him were tight because he played squash and I played tennis. We used to tease each other about who was the bigger sissy . I miss him.

Amelia's Ward highway
Two die as car hits truck
By Cathy Wilson
Saturday, January 3rd 2004

Two young men died early yesterday morning after the car they were travelling in crashed into a loaded truck on the Amelia's Ward Highway.

And in a separate incident six persons were rushed to the Linden hospital following an accident between a minibus and a Didco lorry.

Dead are Gerard Greaves, 20, of Amelia's Ward and Sigidi Ngqondo, 21 of Moblissa and South Amelia's Ward. Orin Alleyne, 22, is critical in the Mackenzie Hospital. According to information reaching Stabroek News, shortly after 5 am, Ngqondo borrowed a friend's car to take his two friends home. "We were all hanging out all night and when it was time to go home this morning who didn't have their own car got rides with others. Ngqondo borrowed his friend's car to drop off Gerry and OJ. Next thing we got the news that they had crashed and died," a young man recalled.

Across at the Greaves' home, his mother said, "This morning around five I heard a loud horn blowing. I jumped out of my bed and ran to the front window to see who it was. But by the time I got to the scene I got a blackout. This happened without even knowing that something had gone wrong with my son." She said that shortly after, a young man drove up and told her that Gerry was involved in an accident. She said her husband decided to go and check the severity of the accident. "When Doc came back I asked him how serious it was, he told me very serious and that Gerry had died. And I went to see my son."

According to the grieving mother, when she got to the scene, the car was crumpled under a loaded truck and both Greaves and Ngqondo were trapped in the front seat. She said that from her observations both the young men's necks were broken. Parts of the car had to be sawn away before the two bodies could be removed.

Over on the other side of Amelia's Ward a brother of Ngqondo said he got the news around 5:15 am. "Just like that I lost my little brother, just like that."

Orin Alleyne, who narrowly escaped death, was said to have been in the back seat and had to be rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex for urgent attention. He suffered serious head injuries and multiple lacerations. When Stabroek News visited the hospital Alleyne was just out of the x-ray room and appeared to be sleeping. When his mother and other relatives spoke to him he was barely able to mumble a few words.
