Posh tipped to miss No.1 spot

LONDON (Reuters) - Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is set to miss out again on her first solo number one single this week, chart experts say.

The singer, married to England captain David Beckham, was tipped to enter Sunday's chart at number three with her double-A side "Let Your Head Go" and "This Groove".

"Early sales indications suggest Victoria Beckham is likely to miss out yet again on that elusive number one single," said HMV record chain spokesman Gennaro Castaldo.

He said "Posh Spice" was selling half as many records as the current number one, "Mad World" by American duo Michael Andrews and Gary Jules.

Beckham enjoyed nine number one hits with the Spice Girls in the 1990s, but has struggled to repeat that success as a solo artist.

Her previous solo releases, "Not Such an Innocent Girl" and "A Mind Of Its Own", both reached number six in the charts.

She peaked at number two in August 2000 with "Out of Your Mind", recorded with dance band Truesteppers and the singer Dane Bowers.

The single was beaten to the top spot by London singer Sophie Ellis Bextor, whose latest single is also released this week but is not expected to make the top 10.

VB beat SEB this time...but too bad neither can hit #1. :(

Victoria Beckham is likely to be denied the coveted Number One spot this weekend as sales of Gary Jules' Mad World continue to climb.

The former Spice Girl is on a publicity blitz in a bid to shift copies of her double A-side single, This Groove/Let Your Head Go

But Midweek sales figures show that she is currently at number three as Jules is outselling her by two-to-one and looks set to have a third week at the top
Although Number One seems beyond her grasp, music experts said Beckham is still doing well by her standards.

The single will be her highest ever solo chart entry - previous releases Not Such An Innocent Girl (2001) and Mind Of Its Own (2002) both reached number six.

Out Of Your Mind, which reached number two in 2000, was a collaboration with Truesteppers and Dane Bowers.

"Early sales indications for this week suggest Victoria is likely to miss out yet again on that elusive Number One single," chart expert Gennaro Castaldo, of music retailer HMV, said.

"Her single has a strong chance of entering this week's chart as the highest new entry with a top three position.

"It is not doing too badly at all and she should be quite happy with that. It will give her a great platform to relaunch her career.

"It's also worth noting that Gary Jules and Ozzy Osbourne can count Sunday's sales so they have a head start on Victoria, who only released her single yesterday."

First day sales (from dotmusic.com)

1. Gary Jules "Mad World" 11,164 (copies)
2. Kelly & Ozzy Osbourne "Changes" 9,217
3. Victoria Beckham "Let Your Head Go/This Groove" 6,523
