Actually Jolly, Pattys old coach Eric Van Harpen now coaches Manuellea, though he hasn't done much for her or not to the extent as her other coaches have done IMO. It's her consistency that lets her down, as well as her confidence. If she was consistent she would make a top 40 Player IMO, at her best she plays like Martina Hingis with only about a 1/5 of the talent, Good serve, Backhand, forehand, lob, Slice are all good and all round which makes her a good all round player on all surfaces.

Her best shot is the drop shot which when played correctly has the potential to be in the top 5 in the world of Players who execute drop shots.

Also, Emmanuelle's parents are some of the wealthiest people in Moncao/Switzerland, Leaving everyones Tennis winnings out and looking on family finances Emmanuelle Gagliardi's family would be the front runners very easily, and put it to perspective Anna Kournikovas would be one of the poorest.

As Eric was "detailed" by Camp Sharapova to tour with Sharky (something Lansdorp doesn't do anymore), he can't have other clients. Re. Manu's Manager, did you mean (American) Don Sand http://www.tennisangels.com, or someone else?

I hadn't either till I saw his name on the WTA agent's list, which had several inaccuracies. And re. coaching, Manu had gone back to Arnaud Decugis, I believe, though that must not have worked out (as they're no longer a team).

Also, she either can't or won't use family money for tennis expenses, having said after Choudury split with Peppermint Patty that he was "too expensive". One has to admire Manu's self-sufficient attitude, but wonder if its limiting her potential.

I was thinking that aswell a tad, It says in some profiles of her, that even coming from a wealthy family Emmanuelle has joined the tour by hard work and determination, Her family does have the expenses to cover all her costs very easily, yet she doesn't. Her prizemoney is good for where she is ranked, though If I was in her situation I would probably user the familys wealth a little to be more sufficient in my year.

Gagliardi grateful for win

By Dale Budge at the ASB Bank Tennis Centre

Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi is just happy to be playing in the second round of the ASB Classic in Auckland after a straight sets victory over Czech Republic's Klara Koukalova on Tuesday.

Like many of the players in the first round, Gagliardi was playing her first match of the year and told reporters that she was simply happy to still be in the tournament.

"It was a pretty good match for the first of the year. Happy to have another opportunity to play tomorrow."

Her win sets up a mouth-watering showdown with defending champion Eleni Daniilidou.

The interesting thing is that it was Daniilidou who knocked Gagliardi out of last year's tournament in the semifinals.

"I just played her that time (last year) so it will be nice to have some revenge," she said.

But the Swiss right-hander is confident that she has improved as a player since then.

"All around the areas and physically I feel better."

Daniilidou had little trouble progressing into the second round on Monday and Gagliardi managed to see a little of the match.

"I watched a few games and she struggled to find rhythm. It only takes one match to get your rhythm back," she admitted.

Many of the players have had the odd problem with the heat at Auckland.

The sun and the wind have caused problems, particularly when serving.

But Gagliardi is enjoying the conditions at the ASB Bank Tennis Centre, especially with her using this tournament as build-up to the Australian Open.

"I think it is fine here. The same as the Australian Open which is what you want."

Gagliardi untroubled by youngster

Switzerland's Emmanuelle Gagliardi has progressed through to the second round of the ASB Classic with a comfortable 6-4 6-2 win over young Czech Klara Koukalova on Tuesday.

Gagliardi, a semifinalist at the ASB Classic in 2003, held her composure in the heat of court four at Auckland's ASB Tennis Centre while her opponent lost hers.

Playing under the very hot midday sun, Gagliardi looked largely untroubled by the promising Czech.

She took the first set 6-4 in half an hour.

In the second Koukalova allowed unforced errors to creep into her game and strangely she looked all at sea and almost not interested in the match.

Between points the young Koukalova was looking over to the match on court seven and meandered from one side of the court to the other.

Her very relaxed attitude and body language suggested she had given up the fight when Gagliardi broke her twice in the early stages of the second set.

But Koukalova came to Auckland with a reputation as a young player with plenty of promise and she showed some of that talent in breaking back during the fourth game.

She produced a flurry of winners that were too good for Gagliardi but between those were far too many unforced errors, which eventually cost her the set and the match.

Gagliardi had two match points and needed just one of them to advance to the second round where she will face top seed Eleni Daniilidou of Greece.

Nice start for Manu. Poor Klara had the "luck" of beating an injured Monica, which perhaps raised expectations too much, too soon.

BTW, re. coaching, the very fact that Manu is yet to reach a WTA singles final presents the opportunity to play on the well-known vanity of coaches, as a coach gets to say: "I'm the one who made a winner out of Emmanuelle Gagliardi @ age 27...".

Incidentally, Manu is now 2 away from her 100th career match win. :)

Big well done to Emmanuelle :) :) I was following this match on the scoreboard and the points of the tiebreak were going by extremely slowly so they must have been playing some tense and close points. That is a really nice win to get to 3rd round at Wimbledon beating the number 1 in your country adds a nice touch :D :) I know sometimes the Russian girls have a difficult time playing other Russian players but for Emmanuelle it does not happen as often that she is playing a Swiss so she must be really proud of this one :) :)

I am remembering something I read about tension between Patty and some of the Swiss?? She might have had this is mind today and really wanted this win which must be special for her :) :) -----> Good Luck in round 3 Emmanuelle Gagliardi!
