View Full Version : Hungary vs. Canada

Thoughts? Opinions?

Petra Mandula (HUN) vs. Maureen Drake (CAN)

Going by ranking, you'd expect Petra Mandula to easily win through, but a fiesty Maureen Drake probably won't let that happen. It depends who is more likely to get off to a sluggish start to the year. The surface suits Drake better than it does Mandula, but the indoor conditions would probably suit Mandula better than Drake. I'm picking a resilient Drake to squeak this one out or blow it wide open.

Attila Savolt (HUN) vs. Frank Dancevic (CAN)

Going by rankings, Attila Savolt has the match in his grasp, but the younger Frank Dancevic could be capable of something spectacular. I've never seen Dancevic strike a ball, but if he's been chosen to play the Cup, then chances are he's a hot prospect. On the other hand, Savolt is a steady player who will either win by sheer consistency or lose by lack of a weapon. I would pick a determined Savolt to even the tie if Mandula should falter.

Mandula-Savolt vs. Drake-Dancevic

I pick the experienced Mandula to anchor the Hungarians to a mixed doubles victory. Drake and Dancevic may not have enough doubles prowess between them to stop the more highly-fancied Hungarian outfit.

I'd expect the Hungarians to make the main draw in the outcome, but anything is possible with the unknown quantity that is the Canadians. It should be a close tie, but the winning nation from this tie will then face even stiffer competition during the week. Good luck to both countries.

I pick Hungary 2-1

Mandula def Drake
Dancevic def Savolt, he played well to get the canadians into the davis cup world group so can produce when playing for his country

I hope Canada pulls it out somehow. Dancevic failed to qualify for the USO, and is obviously in Australia to try to qualify for Oz; qualifying for the Hopman cup and getting to play 3 singles matches against some world class opponents would be an excellent experience for him.

I pick Canada 2-1

Mandula def Drake: Drake hasnt been doing too well lately and I'd expect Mandula to just outclass her, since she isnt bad on this surface.

Dancevic def Savolt: Dancevic seems like a good player, i think he defeated Kuerten and/or Saretta from Brazil (cant quite remember) to help Canada win their DC tie. Savolt hasnt impressed me at all this year, in fact i think he pretty much sucks.

Drake/Dancevic def Mandula/Savolt: Havent seen any of these play doubles but I think the games of the Canadians is better suited to doubles.

Dancevic will surprise, I'm sure. I don't know about Mo, I hope she plays as good as she can, but I don't see her winning the rubber. Canada has the edge in doubles because doubles in Canada is always strong. Let's hope it is in 2 days! Go Canada :woohoo:

Canada 2-1

Drake vs. Mandula-I love Mo, but she had an absolutely shit season after Wimbledon. Losing to the likes of Neha Uberoi and Kelly McCain...blech! If this were on grass it would be a different story, but you have to pick Petra to win this. Even if Maureen plays her very best and Petra is a bit off par, it'd still be Mo barely squeaking by in a close 3 sets. Can't see it happening though

Mandula d. Drake 6-3 6-2

Dancevic vs. Savolt-Savolt is a clay court specialist who grinds opponents down. Dancevic is a Canadian serve and volleyer that beats the living out tar out of his serve. It all depends on how Dancevic's serve holds up. If he can keep that together, he'll definitely get a chance to break Savolt's serve at some point in the set.

Dancevic d. Savolt 6-4 7-6

Drake/Dancevic vs. Mandula/Savolt-Mandula is a much better doubs player than Drake, but Savolt is just retarded up at the net. But he'll probably serve and stay back. There's no way Dancevic will be broken simply because Mandula won't get his serves back, so based on that they should just barely get through.

Drake/Dancevic will win 4-6 6-3 6-4

Dancevic is not a serve and volleyer! He does it occasionaly. He got a HUGE forehand and serve but the backhand is not so good. Not bad but could be a lot better...

I pick Canada to do the 3-0 sweep.
