 Speaking of Marti, I am watching her against Vee at Rome '99 now. She was supposed to be unbeatable on clay, but Vee prevailed that day :bounce:

Its not a question of "waiting" until other players retire...Martina has beaten them all when she was in top form...this year when she couldn't compete, players like Henin-Hardenne, Clijsters, the Russians, Ai and Mauresmo all took strides to better their game and raise their rankings, therefore took advantage of the "Williams sisters" not being out there...however 2004 will be a very interesting year as to who emerges as the "cream of the crop"...Martina would love to be one of them I'm sure of it... if she were only "healthly" enough to compete....although she is able to play recreational tennis, she is unable to play anymore than a couple of hours before experiencing pain....but maybe the old adage will come true "time will heal all wounds" Hope so !! :hearts:

I did not mean it to sound like she was afraid but rather the vacuum would suck her in.

Where are all the WS fans to condemn this stupid thread? It's every bit as dumb as any gogomaggie thread.

Hey you are entitled to your opinion, but there will be a vaccuum created when Jen, Monica, and Lindsay leave. Many have speculated that both Sisters may leave early. You don't think Marti will notice that? She is only 22. There are millions of dollars to be made. Hell even Navratilova will be tempted.

Last I checked Hingis has a career ending injury. And she already has millions of dollars.

And there will be no vacuum. Was there a vacuum when Arantxa retired? Or when Steffi retired? Or when Martina N retired? Or ... when anybody in tennis retired? Of course not. Because everybody retires past their primes so they've already been overtaken as the standard bearers of women's tennis.

Marti was not overtaken in that way. She was forced out due to her ankles. Ankles heal especially at such a young age. Look at what Lindsay is enduring in an effort to continue to play. Personally, I feel she will give it another go. Modern medicine is amazing.

She WAS overtaken. Her ankle problems began in late 2001 ... by then it had been almost three years since her last Slam.

Lindsay has a different injury anyway. Just because she could recover from hers and still play doesn't mean hingis can do the same with her injury.

It is just a matter of wanting to get back on the court. Something just needs to motivate her and return that competitive fire. Millions, ripe for the taking might just be the thing. :)

So is the cure for cancer all a matter of wanting to continue to live?

Martina was the world's #1 player and practically the best player on clay for a while. Heck I did not expect Venus to beat her on the red dirt in 99 , but she did it twice. Can you believe that some idiot (you know who you are, expect some in return :fiery: ) bad repped me for saying she was unbeatable? UGH

But we all know why she won't come back. She simply cannot stand getting blasted off the court by Serena and Venus.

I wish she would come back. It would be good comic relief.
