I am watching some of the opening Spain v Aus. DavisCup match, and I must say it makes Me feel a bit sad that Kim spat the dummy on the Fed Cup ,in Her words to make a statement to the ITF, because it wasn't held where She thought it should be... so Kim thinks what will I do next? oh I know! I'll fly down under and play cheerleader for My lookalike boyfriend in the male equivalent of the Fed Cup.Am I the Lone Ranger in thinking this is a sad message for Womans tennis and are We heading back to the days when a Woman's place was in the kitchen?

That was a good post.
I think why Kim did not want to play Fed Cup is that it does not mean much to her, if it did, she would be there no matter where it is played. But who can blame her, the top 200 see it the same way :p .
I think she was just too tired and wanted to be with her boyfriend in Australia(I am not even sure if it is in Australia), but anyway, he is struggling and she wants to support him.
Also, he does the same thing for her, so I see no problem with it.

Have fun Kim

Yeah, but say it.....you know donīt try to come with a principle-stand and stuff. Just say I didnīt want to play, like Justine did....she didnīt want to play, but she didnīt want to be seen as the mean and country-downer Kim.

you are so harsh on kimmy.
I think she was considered meaner when she said what she meant. She could have said I am tired only and not played, but she got her message accross. I think she was both tired and wanted to be with her boyfriend. She does not care for Fed Cup, as I said, and as she showed, and that's fine, but she wants to make it something more special by having people in the stands and actually watch it, unlike in Russia, where the ones that do sow up, show up with a vodka and dooze off.

Fed Cup and Davis Cup are totally different even though they should be similar in theory. The Davis Cup semis were held in September so that's a difference but the big difference is that one of the countries in the final always hosts the final. You wouldn't get a final in France if it's Australia vs. Spain. The Davis Cup format assures that there will always be a good crowd for the ties because there will always be a home team.

And also even if Kim had played Fed Cup, she would be in Australia right now. No way she would miss the DC final unless she absolutely had to. Davis Cup is huge in Australia. Its popularity level can't even be compared to Fed Cup. Davis Cup means a lot to the Aussie team and by association, it means a lot to Kim as well!

She didnīt say she didnīt want to play. She said it was a protest against ITF because they put the Fed in Russia. While Iīm sure that even if it was in Belgian, she wouldnīt have played.

Yeah she did. She also said she was tired and didn't want to play if it was going to be in Russia.

She said she would have played if it was in Belgium.

Basically her 2 choices are go to Russia (even though you don't want to) extent your already long season by a week, then fly to Australia...or go straight to Aus, skip fed cup and have an extra week off..

Gee that's a tough decision :p

I don't know about Justine..I think should would have played as well if it was in Belgium..If I'm not mistaken she only said she wasn't going after it was announced that it would be in Russia.

They both said they would've have played if it was in Belgium. I think the fact that it was played in Russia was the deciding factor for both of them. (Personally can't say I blame them)

Don't know then. Justine said during US Open that she won't play, even if it was in Belgium.
But she was so tired by the end of the season, so it was obvious to me ;)
But let's forget it, it doesn't matter anymore ;)

what a stupid discussion!!!We know how much Kim cares about her nation. And many people inside tennis said she did the right thing,Nvratilova too.
The fact is that Kim has the guts to say and do things.
Anyway here is she...a bit upset by Philippoussis...

What's wrong with the Fed Cup being held in Russia? Amelie and Mary both didn't mind the trip even the American players didn't say anything.

Other posters haven't been giving conflicting reports, they've been giving their personal opinion.

Kim herself has said she would have played had it been in Belgium. What posters here on WTAworld think about it doesn't change Kim's words.

Bee, it's not about the trip, it's about the lack of atmosphere. Watch a Davis Cup match and you'll know what I'm talking about. Fed Cup is only fun if there are thousands of people cheering you on. Without the crowd, Fed Cup is nothing. Last time Kim played Fed Cup in Russia, there were hardly any people watching.

Kim should have played no matter where it was. If she did Belgium would have had a chance to win the Cup, instead of being thrashed by the American C team
If she really cared about her country and was not injured she should have played no matter what the format.

Why should Kim go all the way to russia to play the self-destrucing Fed Cup  She has played so much this year...and she cares enough for her country lol...she would have played if it was in Belgium, even though she was tired, that's caring enough....

i thought Justine said that she was suffering from a back infection during the USO...so would she have played in Belgium or not?

if they don't wanna play FC so WHAT? they don't have to. personally i would be honoured to play for my country, but it's not the same for everyone.

credit for Kim to come out and say up front she didn't want to play

after reading the replies to this thread I think You are right with the two main points that have come out, that the Fed Cup has nowhere near the attraction of the Davis Cup, and that Kim is right to stick to Her principles, and Ithink it was the first fact and the site of one of the Worlds best and most popular WTA players jumping up and down like a clapping yo-yo at at the Davis cup set Me off! it is good to see Her cheering on the toilet paper Man as He has done for Her. There is no doubt the Fed cup needs some sort of kick up the butt.
I'm also sad that My favourite,Vera Z. tried Her best and probably missed out on a bear-hug from Boris Yeltsin!

To clarify on Justine, I don't think she'd have played in Belgium either because a large factor in her decision was the shitty treatment she's been getting from "the Flemish camp" in Belgium. The doping allegations were inexcusable as was Kim's "she always takes timeouts against me" lie. Justine says that she's not been offered personal apologies from anyone concerned but only the media has had placatory statements from them. Why should she want to play on a team with people who treat her like this? It's up to the Belgian tennis federation to woo her back because it's their loss, not hers.

I understand about the Federation bit..but her feeling regarding Kim are of no importance. They never play together! Justine would play her singles and Kim would play her singles..and probably Callens/Maes would play the doubles.

Well, Justine & Kim seems had no problems talking to each other (as they did in LA, even practising). So it's more about other people.
