Why did Serena retire in that match?

bandabou
Nov 27th, 2003, 03:57 PM
I think she had a foot or knee injury. She was TOTALLY and REALLY destroying Martina, but then I think she got injured or was already injured.

Yeah, because she wasn´t rallying: winner or error....Martina was just a spectator during that match. Amazing.

One of the wierdest matches I have ever seen was in 1978, a few weeks after the US Open in Atlanta when Chris Evert beat Martina Navratilova 7-6 0-6 6-3.

Now, Chris NEVER lost a set 6-0. I can recall this happening only twice to Evonne Goolagong in 73 + 74, and to BJK in the W final '73. Chris was tough as nails, and at her absolute best when she was behind. She narrowed her eyes, pursed her lips and world number #1 Navratilova was history in the third.

And I was bummed.

Just because she beat your Lindsay ?

No need to roll eyes. It wasn't as I was jumping all over the place of happiness. I was pissed off for some personal reasons back then and I was more vicious and cynical than usual, so I felt glad. Soon I forgot it ever happened.
Had I known about her mother's death, I would have thought differently.
