I was watching AO QF 2001 between Serena and Martina H and was just thinking what an amazing set of tennis, really high quality, limited unforced errors. I think the best set of tennis i've ever seen. Wht other sets of tennis have u seen tht have been great?

Definitely the best set played by a player in history of tennis must be the 2000 Canadian Open Serena vs. Hingis (6-0).
It was far from competitive, but man oh man, was it ever an dominating set.
Too bad I erased it soon after because Serena lost

That is the one that first comes to mind.

Martina taking the second was just an amazing fightback after that.

It could have been an epic third set if not for Serena's injury :(.

Serena's speech in French at the end was just the best :rolls:.

The third set between Martina Hingis and Serena Williams in the QF of the 2001 Australian Open.

The third set between Jennifer Capriati and Kim Clijsters in the final of the 2001 French Open.

Also, the second set between Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis in the final of the 2002 Australian Open.

Who can forget Serena vs Martina at the ´00 Canadian Open?! 6-0 and 3-0 in like 20 minutes and against the no.1?! SCARY!!

In fact Serena sure has had some VERY good sets. At Wimbledon´02 she had like two in a row: against Dani and then against Momo again.

When Serena´s on, I think that´s the best tennis you´re gonna see today.

Mary playing het best set would beat Serena playing her best set easily!

Probably....but then again, how many times CAN Mary play at her best?! I remember how she TOTALLY creamed Steffi Graf and then lost tamely to ASV the next day.

With Serena her best-form tends to last a whole tournament. Only time when she had a let-off, is u.s. open ´01: cream Hingis, then bow tamely to Venus.

Plus Serena has been playing two years already at her best level, winning 5 of 6 slams she played in.

Mary has like 5 years between slams or was it longer?!

But isn't this thread about the best set played by a player?

Indeed.....but I DIDN´T see Mary´s best tennis, so I can´t comment on that. I go with what I saw and the best set of tennis I saw, is by Serena Williams.

How aptly, because Serena totally destroyed Justine the first few games of Wimbledon....but that wasn´t even in her top 10 of best-perfomances.

I haven't seen as much tennis as the others on this board, but my answer is the set that I watch with my head shaking in amazement every time I see it: The third set of the 1992 French Open Final, Monica over Steffi, 10-8.

The match seemed to teeter wildly on every shot, every point. At one point, Steffi planted a forehand winner in the corner, 1 inch from each line, match point down. Great stuff.

But your post does.

Serena was never up 6-0, 3-0. Hingis won the eighth game of the match. :o

I found Julia V. 2nd set against Hantuchova at this years US Open quite entertaining. Caught my attention. Obvious mooball tactics. Dumb that Julia left that style when things got really tight. Asagoe against Hantuchova in the third set was scrappy.

That is funny -- to suggest that Mary at her best even compares with Serena at her best. I agree, Serena at her best is just the most dominating tennis there is. She was amazing in the summer of 2001, at Wimbledon 2002/US Open 2002, and I also agree that Venus was amazing at the Acura Classic in 2001. I think the summer of 2001 was her best tennis ever.

And I agree with Spirit about the 92 French final!
