View Full Version : The most interesting/surprising/humiliating h2h?

I have been a huge fan of Mary Joe's and her worst enemy was always Steffi to whom she lost 15+ matches from her first and last meetings with the German. This is the worst and most humiliating h2h I could think of.
If we could include families, then my vote would have to go to the Maleevas against, again, Steffi. Combining all the three sisters, they beat Steffi ZERO time if my memory serves and they played her more than 30 times in total!

perhaps they won against steffi in doubles????

curious are also the h2h with hingis - testud, novotna - davenport, maleeva - davenport/v.williams...

Serena vs Lindsay 9-2. Not even at the top of her levels, Lindsay couldnīt handle Serena. Some really beatings out there.

Serena vs Kim 9-1. Some were close, but still...

Conchita is 21:6 against the Maleeva (and 5 of those wins came from Manuela! I guess this stat is misleading as Manuela actually has a favorable H2H 5-4)

beecharmer

yep, Graf went 17-0 with MJF, 21 - 0 with Tauziat, and 36 - 0 with the Maleeva sisters! Youd have thought Manuela would have beaten here in the mid 80s, but Graf crushed her 2 and 2 in 1985

Didn't one of the French women have zero wins against Steffi? Or maybe she was Belgian. Can't remember. Where's Irma?

But, the most humiliating loss to Steffi has to be Natasha's love-love final at the French in 1988.

Poor Mary Joe almost won the French Open against Stef in 1993. I think that still haunts Mary Joe but it doesn't stop her from still being friends with Stef (their kids have play dates together).

overall, monica has a winning (or tied) record against 95% of her opponents... serena leads (or ties) 96% of her opponents.

before monica was stabbed, she had only EVER lost to 11 ppl.
capriati, evert, mary joe, ferrando, steffi, martina n, novotna, gabriela, anne smith (lol... in 88), and laura gildemeister.

for serena at 19 (for the sake of some comparison), capriati, davenport, mary joe, steffi, hingis, kruger, likhovtseva, mary pierce, ruano pascual, sanchez-vicario, suarez, irina sprilea, tauziat, testud, and venus. 15 in total... pretty darn good for a "late bloomer". even if she didn't compete much. she now holds a positive head to head against almost all of those players.

everyone forgets the h2h between novotna and davenport. jana had one match point against lindsay, but never one against her (in singles).

it is weird that monica couldn't figure lindsay out-- couldn't figure her or martina out. i think lindsay's serve might have something to do with it. but then you think monica has great returns... so i guess the serve was good enough to take monica's return game just enough for lindsay to beat her almost every time. also, lindsay's younger and fresher. their footspeed may be about the same, but lindsay's endurance was better when she was consistently beating her. and it's not like she was ever beating the crap out of monica. they have quite a few tough matches against each other. even lindsay (when they played in la) said that "there are plenty of other people in the top 8 that i would rather play than monica."

But how do you define 'genuine'? If it's playing a player more than once only Jo Durie (4-3) and Wendy Turnbull (2-0) have winning head-to-heads against Steffi. If it's playing just once and winning, as well as Patty and Liz Smylie, there are seven others who did this: Shelley Walpole, Beverly Mould, Nerida Gregory, Barbara Romano, Kate Latham and Corrine Vanier. I'm sure the Steffi die-hards will say catching Steffi early in her career and then never playing again, as these players did, is as valid as playing her in the summer of 1998 when she struggled after her long injury-enforced play-off!!

Poor Sandrine always came so close to beating Hingis but never won the few points in the match that decided it  I loved watching their matches. The 2000 Berlin one was a match Sandrine should have won. I think she was a set and 5-4 up and they played like a 10 deuce game. I always remember Sandrine's husband in the stands with his head in his hands after Sandrine missed a couple of easy shots at really crucial times.

before monica was stabbed, she had only EVER lost to 11 ppl.
capriati, evert, mary joe, ferrando, steffi, martina n, novotna, gabriela, anne smith (lol... in 88), and laura gildemeister

Monica also lost to Arantxa at the 1992 Canadian Open.

That 2001 Roland Garros match had the most unforced errors I have ever seen from Arantxa. She breezed the first set, by the third set the both of them were just hitting so many errors. I could not believe I was watching ASV hitting errors like she hit that day, it was so unlike her.

I was always surprised this head to head was not closer. They played some great matches. The 1995 Rome Final, Conchita just totally outplayed ASV. I thought Conchita should have won the French that year, she was playing so well. Arantxa always won the close ones. The 1999 Berlin match, Conchita was 5-3 up in the third I think. The 1996 Hamburg match, Conchita was a set and 5-2 up. The 2000 French Open match was a surprise. ASV had just beaten Venus the round before, and then against Conchita played a really impatient match. ASV did nothing right that day. I think ASV had a mental hold over Conchita, because Conchita could have won a few of these matches she lost.

Conchita's 1995 clay season showed she had all the results to be in with a chance for the RG title. In her semi with Graf neither played well and both had opportunities to win that match but yet again Steffi won the mental battle as she has done with so many good opponents over the years. She was too damn stubborn throughout her career  ;) Anyway, I like this head to head:

Conchita was the form player in 1995 coming into the French.

Steffi hadn't played much that year from what I remember and was seeded no.2 behind ASV.

Conchita had even beaten ASV in the Rome final (convincingly) and when she started the tournament didn't even drop a game until her second round match.

Still, she didn't play well at all in the first set and by then, even though she rallied for the second, you kind of got the feeling she was only delaying the inevitable.

It's still amazing what happened with steffi from 94/95 though
yeah people will always say monica this and monica but monica was already out for 1,5 year so still

steffi in 94 looked depressed and said things in the pc's like"I don't know were home is" then she took two breaks (she was still depressed when she came back at the masters, then the above comment was) and she was just a different person, much more happier and relaxed on court

maybe she felt she had nothing to lose anymore with her back being semi ruined
The media also wrote she had troubles on the love front in 94 and maybe she worked that out through the break since in 95 Michael B was still there;) (he was so cute :hearts: )

Serena vs Kim 9-1. Some were close, but still...

I think it's 7-1 actually

Anke Huber was more competitive with Graf than Seles, but only just. She never really came close to beating Graf either.

Bram, I meant like Dominique dominated Sabine and Kim kinda dominated Justine, but Justine won the big matches.

True, but Arantxa chose the right time to call it a career!
She will go down as one of the very few pleyars who had a positive h2h record against Serena! Way to go, Arantxa!

Do you really think thats why asv decided to retire? Please excercise some common sense.

I think Maggie is 9-1 over Chanda and the only loss coming from an injury retirement. For two players with similar careers I find that to be quite a domination. I hope they play in 2004! :)

Hmm...I just checked the ITF and they say 7-2 (1 retirement and 1 walkover win for Chanda). I remember recently speaking to Brian about this and I could have sworn it was 9-1. In any case...it is surprising. :)

I wonder though...Has Maggie always been the higher seed (except for this past Fall)?

I can't believe anyone took it offensive.
You better have some common sense about jokes.
