You heard it here first. Justine is going to get in the Williams sisters' face on a non-clay surface next year.

If she doesn't do in Australia (where both sisters are likely to be rusty) she won't do it. That's my "prediction"

Guess Justine is gonna have a decent chance against the sisters any given day though she will still be the underdog until she really proves that she has caught up to them in not just rankings.

Only if she continues her unethical play. Beat the cheat. She has been unethical in matches against Serena, Jennifer Capriati, and Kim Clijsters.

Itīs gonna be VERY VERY though to do that. When was the last time she even took a set off a sister on non-clay surfaces?!

Give her at least more chances. She wasn't given enough opportunities to prove herself this year. Sure she was beat on a non-clay surface on every occasion she faced a Williams but it's not like she played them 10 times or anything. She seems mentally tougher as well as physically than their last meetings. So I don't expect their meetings to be as one-sided as they used to be next year.

Agreed, but she has played Serena like 5 times on non-clay surfaces and ainīt been pretty.

Itīs only hopeful that sheīs been improving.

Exactly! Because Serena doesnīt play with you. On clay Justine can keep bringing balls back and stuff....but on the other surfaces?! Canīt handle Serenaīs pace.

Why would I have to worry about him? He just finished number 1 and won the U.S. Open.

So why do you say Williams-domination is over?! They did reach two finals out of three slams played.

If you ainīt worried about Andy and Mandy, why should we be worried about the sisters?!

One of them have won a slam each year since ī99 and at least 2!! a year since ī00! They ainīt going nowhere.

Nov 22nd, 2003, 07:51 PM
2003: Mauresmo beat both on clay including the injury retire by Venus
2002: Kim beat Venus on clay and Serena on carpet
2001: Hingis beat both in Australia on Rebound and Serena in Sydney.

Past three years they were only ONCE beaten on the same surface by the same person. Only once per year they were beaten by the same person on ANY surface. Obviously the sisters are not easily defeated.

If there is anything that I have come to appreciate in the last two years as tennisfan it is the sisters strength, determination and fighting-spirit. I know that they will come back stronger than ever, they have something to prove. Justine has heaps of confidence, new number 1 and 2 times GS-winner, but she isn't the underdog anymore. The sisters have nothing to lose and they want their positions back. IMO, if she can't beat them at AO where they are still a bit "rusty", she can't beat them anywhere else except on clay ofcourse.

I donīt know why the people make a drama of this.

Ainīt Justine the new no.1,itf-champion, player of the year, "only" two-slam winner, this and that?! She is SUPPOSED to start beating the sisters consistently now. Serena is down to no.3, Venus ainīt even top 10.

Justine is SUPPOSED to be beating the sisters now.

This is fact and it made this thread pointless. If you have to make a thread about the no.1 player beating the n0.3 & 11, then something must be wrong with you. Infact she ought to beat them, give up the position or retire. No excuses that it wasnt on clay or something to that effect

Since 2000, people have been prdicting what player will be able to challenge the sisters.

End of 2000: Lindsay Davenport was supposed to challenge the sisters
Result: The last time she hass beaten either sister was the 2000 US Open (Serena in the quarterfinals)

End of 2001: Jennifer Capriati was supposed to challenge the sisters
Result: Jennifer has not beaten either sister since August 2001

End of 2002: Kim Clijsters was supposed to challenge the sisters
Result: Kim was 0-5 against the sisters in 2003

End of 2003: Justine Henin-Hardenne is supposed to challenge the sisters in 2004
Result: TBD

If recent history is any indication, Justine will not do anything aginst the sisters in 2004 but add losses to her H2H against both.

Actually Venus lost to Lindsay at Lintz in 2000 after her Victory at the US Open and the Olympics.

Lindsay terminated her 35 match streak.

Otherwise, the observations are correct.

Remember, Serena after being out in early 2002 with an ankle injury, Won the title in Scottsdale and Miami, beating the top players in the process.
She went from #9 to #1 in about four months.

Venus didn't play any warmups and made the final at the AO 2003. Serena did Hopman Cup

All I can say is the other players BETTER be ready!

Well, its always nice to have someone billed as being up to the challenge of beating the sisters, half the time at least. It makes for gripping matches and loads of adrenaline rush.
My opinion: I don't think Justine's performance in 2004 against the sisters will be significantly different from those of the preceding three in their respective years. JMHO.

Btw, the thread starter should ask Glenn about starting threads, and what happened to him during Aussie '03. He's been really quiet and gives insightful posts, ever since then.

Actually WS are supposed to challenge belgians in 2004...Or to be more precise, Serena is supposed to challenge them. When tennis tour hits Aus Open, it will be 2 years and 4 months since Venus has won a slam.
Venus was a great player but...you know, her motivation for tennis is gone.
And Justine succesfully chalenged Serena in 2003 even if she was not supposed to do that.

Wasnīt that what people were saying last year?! But if you saw the scoreline of the Venus vs Justine match at the Oz last year: 6-3 6-3 for Venus, you couldnīt really tell that it was Venus who hasnīt played a warm-up and that it was Justine who played warm-ups, hit the gym and stuff!!

So as long as the results donīt reflect that she isnīt training, no need to spread something false around.

Grass is the only surface where the Williams still have a clear advantage over Justine - clay, hard, indoors, Justine already knows she can take them down. And even on grass i wouldn't be shocked to see Justine take out one or both of the sisters on her way to the Big W title, because she is just so damm feisty. But Venus and Serena have a big advantage over Justine with their size, athleticism and brute strength that is maximized on the grass, plus it would be tough to break that 4-year Williams winning streak.

But she didnīt really break the Williams domination at the Open either. Winner by default it was.

Plus Justine has NEVER taken a set-off Serena on non-clay surfaces and has just two off Venus. She still has some major ground to cover non-clay surfaces, before I can consider her as equal of the sisters on hardcourts/ indoors.

Doraemon
Nov 29th, 2003, 06:58 PM
I think Justine is still in the position of a underdog against the sisters espeically on non-clay surfaces. Rankings don't speak volumes here as the sisters were idle pre much half the season this year. I think she has improved a lot especially in the confidence part since the sisters both got injured. It was a shame she wasn't given a chance to be tested in the meantime. I dunno if she had won the Open had the sisters or a sister entered, but certainly she wouldn't have lost too easily.
Given the Open was dominated by the sisters the previous three years, it may have well been their fair again but who knows?
I think Justine is more than capable of beating them on anything but not on a consistent basis yet. Obviously in women's tennis surfaces don't matter as much as in men's. though it's still as obvious that clay is the sisters' least favorite surface, they have won quite a few big titles as Serena won the FO last year. On some of their title roads, they crashed every opponent they had faced.
Anyways... let's wait and see what happens the next time they face off.

You should worry about Justine not about Venus. Venus is still the better player, however you see it. She has more titles and their h2h is in Venus favour. Some people are so sick and jealous of the "sistahs", they have to write trash and call it joke. Very funny, I forgot to laugh

You should laugh sometimes, because you seem to take things too seriously... CHILL. About jealousy  don't you have anything better to come up with?

The challenge will be to win a GS title next year, I don't care about beating Venus or anybody else. Venus has had some problems beating Justine but she should worry much more about her losing record at GS finals...

She might have a losing record, but as it stands right now, she has double the singles titles as Justine, 4-2.

What has changed is that Justine has so much more confidence now. It would be hard to do, but not impossible.
If that's all that changed for her, then she is going to be in really deep trouble (talk about falling into your own hole) next time she plays Venus. She needs to do something differently...not just have more confidence. Comfidence isn't going to help her deal with Venus's shots if she just gets the ball back instead of playing aggressively :). We'll say next year though...all this pointless speculation is giving me a headache

I hate to break up your little fantasy world, but I think you are going to be the one that will start looking for excuses in a few months. I don't look for excuses, I am not a Williamsfan, I like Venus that is something else, so I certainly wouldn't have said all the time. :p

Of course it's a plausable prediction. No player is invincible. I could just as easily say that one of sisters will beat her on clay, and it would have equally as much chance of coming true.

No that have MORE chance of coming true, because they HAVE beaten her on clay and give her MORE trouble in the matches they lose to her, than that she gives them a fight in her losses against them on non-clay surfaces.

Williams fans  let them act this way. These same people predicted Williams would never win on clay. These same people were sure Kim now owns Venus and Serena by this time last year. Nothing changed except that it has shifted to Justine. By the way, if you werent afraid, why starting this thread? Justine is n0.1 and going by that logic, She is the one to beat. Everyone elese is the underdog. If you werent pissing in your pants, why starting this thread?

You know what, dont tell me, I dont care. The bounty on her head is what makes tennis interesting next year.

I think its as likely to say that Justine will beat Venus or Serena at the French as it is likely Venus or Serena will beat Justine at the Us Open

however, Justine said herself she wont beat the WS on fast surfaces

Nope! It is likelier that a Williams could beat Justine at the French that, Justine would beat a Williams at the Open....has happened before: a sister beating mrs Henin on clay. Mrs Henin hasnīt beaten a miss Williams on hardcourts yet...not even come close to.

Wow should we give her a fucking cookie if she does it? Henin is the the world number one and is the person to beat. She is expected to beat my fave Serena Williams on faster surfaces on any surface. Serena Williams is the bug on the shoe underdog that is washed up and cant hack it anymore. So it is expected of Henin since she is at the top of the crop.

BTW: Henin and Serena have not played on a hardcourt surface this year so knock off the Henin is better on rebound ace (a form of hardcourt) or anything else trying to hand off credit to Henin where it isnt due. THEY HAVE NOT PLAYED ON ANY US HARDCOURT SURFACES OR INDOOR SURFACES so you dont know if Henins so called new confidence is gonna fly against Williams on the faster surfaces.

PS. There is no problem giving predictions.
