View Full Version : Olympics ranking points: Tier II+ or Tier I-

Here's the points players can earn at the Olympics:

Win: 248
Final: 174
3rd:122
4th: 94
QF: 62
R16: 34
R32: 20
R64: 1

So, it's worth more than a Tier II but less than a Tier I.

The winner should get about the same points as a Tier I winner since there are more rounds, so probably more quality points to earn!

Is this the first time WTA awards the players ranking points at the Olympics?

Why do you think so?
I think it's great of WTA to have decided to change this time around.
It motivates more top players to play it doesn it?

I'm also skeptical towards awarding points.
For those who love to be at the Olympics and play there, it won't matter whether there are points or not, they will play.
And for those who aren't motivated to play, this won't change much either, especially if it's "less worth than a tier I".

Not awarding points would make the Olympics something special.

You're right.
That's why I don't think the top players in generaly really don't give a crap about the event. No wonder tennis is treated so unimportantly during the fornight!

Good info. Why shouldn't it be recognised in some way for ranking points? It's not an exhibition or something.

I think it's a good idea to give some WTA points, so that the players won't say they can't come to the Olympics because they have some point to defend and can't afford to lose them!

I don't know yet about who will come, but this should be an interesting competition. At least we know that Justine will play, and probably Venus will try to defend her title!
Kim Clijsters committed to Cincinatti (Tier III), well I don't understand her decision not to play the Olympics because of her sponsor, this is bs :rolleyes:

Anybody else knows who will be there?

Personally, I think players should play out of respect for their country *and* out of the desire to say "I won the Olympics." If that's not enough for them, then they can take their greedy asses to one of the other events.

Really? I get this impression that Kim & Justine don't want to be in the same team anymore... It looks like a deal:
Fed Cup --> Kim
Olympics --> Justine

Maybe I'm totally wrong though :angel:

Pardon me, but I think all this nice and that talk about Kim is well outdated. Everytime there´s something with her. Remember she couldn´t play Fed-Cup because of sponsorship and stuff. Hello, it is your COUNTRY!! What sponsor?!

I totally agree with anyone who says points shouldn't be awarded for this. To be honest I can't really understand the logic behind it at all :confused:, other than dishing out extra points to players who don't even need them :rolleyes:.

agree
interesting its the same players that refuse to play Fed Cup that don't take Olympics seriously

There shouldn't be points awarded for the Olympics. It's bad logistically, because the players can't defend them the next year. It also kinda cheapens them...the Olympics are special! They should be played just for the honor of doing so.

Come on, Eggie. Surely you can see that for what it really is. It's Kim trying to pull some strings. She's not actually going to miss the Olympics! She'll play, but she'll put up a fight first so that some sort of compromise gets hammered out.

I like the fact that points are awarded. We have seen some great Olympic performances in years past, why shouldn't they be rewarded ranking-wise?
