View Full Version : Sharapova Interview on Craig Kilborn

Nov 22nd, 2003, 02:41 PM
I saw Maria on late night talk Show Host Craig Kilborn's show the other night. She came to tell him about the IMG contract she signed. I must say I was disappointed in her attitude. Much worse than previous interviews I've heard. She cut off Kilborn when he was headed to the "usual" discussion of the comparisons to Kournikova. She said "is there anything else?" Obviously, she is sick of hearing the comparisons, but she needs to understand that the American public knows Kournikova, not her (so far).

She also seemed unhappy when he went to the other "usual" topic of her grunts. I don't understand why he kept asking her about the grunting when they easily could have obtained a video clip of the grunts. Stupid.

When asked if there were any tennis players that she looked up to, she said "none." Kilborn asked about Navrotilova, Evert, and Graf. She just said that they were good players.

Overall, I was disappointed in her attitude. She seems to be going to Kournikova/Hingis route as far as her arrogance. Sounds like I'll be rooting against her soon enough. I'll probably be cheering on the Williams sisters and Clijsters against her and Henin.

Maria is 16. A very intelligent young woman. She will in time become a great interview.
And someone that every talkshow wants as a guest.

Yes, Masha used to answer that her favorite tennis player is herself. So I don't think she'll ever change this opinion. The best thing Masha said about other players is something like: "Graf had changed women's tennis and Serena is doing that now."

"...cheering...against...Henin." - Why against Henin? I'm very interested to know.

srg1, Maria was not unhappy Craig Kilborn broached the subject of her grunting. In fact Maria laughed about her grunting. And I'm sure she knew beforehand that Kilborn would ask her about her grunting. But I do agree with you that Maria should be more diplomatic when she's asked about Anna Kournikova. The audience thought Maria was knocking Anna, but Maria only said "That's so old" in reference to her having been compared to Anna for many years. But it's obvious Masha has some kind of resentment towards Anna by what she says about Anna. And if Maria ever got to play Anna in a tennis match I have a feeling she would be very rough on Anna and pulverize her! Afterall Maria has the best killer instinct of all the Russina's. :D

And srg1, it's been known for years that Maria never had any tennis idols. It's been explained that Russian children don't usually have idols like American kids do. So it's normal for Maria from the culture she's from to not have any idols.

I love Maria, but she don't look good on that show IMO- she has overdone it on the make up.

goldenlox
Nov 24th, 2003, 08:53 PM
I questioned why Maria went on that show when the host is known for talking about Anna. And Maria hears that all the time anyway.
Maybe IMG couldn't get her on any other show.

Eddy, Maria will adjust her makeup accordingly as she gets more experienced doing talk show appearances. She just needs time to grow and mature.

GL, The Late Late Show is a well known talk show. It was a good show for her American night time talk show debut.

goldenlox
Nov 24th, 2003, 09:18 PM
Putting Maria Sharapova on a show where the host several times has put a tv monitor on stage that shows a tape of Anna just to have Anna on camera seems like an act of desperation by IMG.
Maybe they feel the Anna comparisons are vital. Or Kilborn is the only option for Ashley and Maria.

Nov 24th, 2003, 11:50 PM
GL, I get the feeling that IMG needs Maria to become a big star even more than Maria herself needs to become a big star. I hope Masha doesn't get sidetracked by the fame game. If she becomes a top tennis player everything else such as international fame and great wealth will fall into place for Maria.

goldenlox
Nov 24th, 2003, 11:54 PM
Definately. Her tennis is what will make her famous. So why is IMG announcing a modelling deal? Why is she doing this particular talk show?

It's like IMG is trying to invent distractions.

the cat
Nov 25th, 2003, 12:19 AM
IMG has invested alot in Maria since she was 6 years old. They have supported her every step of the way they supprted Anna Kournikova from the age of 10 to the age of 17. Anna left IMG for Octagon, then Advantage International, in 1998 when she was only 17 years old. That move by Anna undoubtedly cost IMG millions of dollars. And IMG doesn't want the sane thing happening with Maria so they are doing everything they can to make her a big star. I just hope it doesn't backfire.

By the way GL, IMG has many other talented and attractive female tennis players to market. But they seem to only be concentrating on Maria. And they market Daniela Hantuchova, too. But that's it. Or so it seems.

goldenlox
Nov 25th, 2003, 12:22 AM
It seems like they're marketing Harkleroad. She was on Kilborn and Best Damn. And Ashley is a future legend against Maria in Baltimore.
Maria is just 16. She wasn't rich and famous at all a year ago.
Next year it will be interesting to see if Maria keeps improving.

the cat
Nov 25th, 2003, 12:54 AM
I don't think Ashley is with IMG.

Reaching the top 20 level will be harder for Maria than reaching the top 50 level. I'm sure she realizes that.

Nov 25th, 2003, 01:00 AM
This year Maria is a name player with silver exempt status. And a modelling deal.
Have any tennis players with modelling deals played well? Maria will have to be a very mature 16 year old.

~SunFlower~
Nov 25th, 2003, 01:13 AM
GL, the modeling deal doesn't worry me at all. She will be just fine as long as she has fire in her eyes with her power, grunts, fists pumping and determination!

I find it interesting that she (if yes) is willing to play in the 50K challenger because she could ignore it and pay attention to the modeling thing. I guess she just has the desire to play tennis no matter what. Maybe that's what she loves to do.

Yes, the only thing we can do is hoping. And the rest is totally up to Masha herself and the people around her.

goldenlox
Nov 25th, 2003, 01:18 AM
Maria was going to play tennis next week no matter what. Either a 50K or two exhibitions.
The question is: will the distractions affect her game?
It was hard to judge this fall because Kim was the only top 50 player she faced.
Now there are more distractions for next year.
I think we'll see pictures of Masha at the zoo in Melbourne.

With Anna, I think it took a number of years before it seemed that she'd got distracted.

Anna has shown over the years that she loves the heat of celebrity.
You see it in who she dates, how she handles herself. She thrives on the hot seat.
And her game still stalled. And look at Hantuchova, who didn't handle things as well.

Maria hasn't dealt with anything yet.

The people around her aren't really helping much...

There's no need for her to be joining some modeling thing at 16.

In the end, it will be all up to her. But, it's going to really test Maria.

The hype makes it more fun to discuss and speculate.
But so far, it's all minor league.
You watch the deals Anna makes the next couple of years. She's just starting. Octagon is looking long term.

Nov 25th, 2003, 02:05 AM
GL, Anna doesn't need to make anymore deals. She needs to start playing WTA tournaments again. As far as Maria Sharapova goes, Maria is going to have plenty of WTA titles and plenty of multi million dollar deals. :D

I see Jessica Simpson getting an ABC show. Paris Hilton a Fox show.
Hollywood wants famous, pretty blondes who can't act.
Anna is in a great situation. And she still can get huge sports marketing deals like XBOX and sports bras.
Maria is far, far away from a big endorsement deal. As far away as Hantuchova.

I think Masha needs people who would talk to her openly, honestly and objectively. Someone who can give her a frank feedback that the way she handled The Late Late Show wasn't good and so on.

Doubtless, the cat is a great fan of Masha. But it seems to me that he always says nice things about Masha, there isn't critical and constructive feedback.

It's hard to find people who are straightforward, and honest with others. I'm one of few who are like this. GL seems like another. It's a hard trait to find... and even harder when your seen as BIG $$$ like Maria is.

goldenlox
Nov 25th, 2003, 02:28 AM
I think what Maria will face is the same thing all young talented players face.
It's hard to do what the great champions do. Almost impossible. If Masha can win majors and reach #1, she'll get plenty of big deals.
But the new Anna stuff just won't fly. Anna is still around. She's the proven name on Madison Avenue. If they don't get her, they want to pay much less.
Or get a great champion, like Serena.

VeraNuVirgosFan
Nov 25th, 2003, 02:43 AM
And even if there were straightforward and honest people around Masha, we can't be sure that she would listen to their honest advice. She might be arrogant, too proud of herself and so on, we never know.

goldenlox
Nov 25th, 2003, 02:49 AM
Maria wants to win. Even if she walks the runway with Gisele, she still wants to win.
But when she's playing Venus or Kim, can she win?
Will she stay healthy and improve enough?
It's easy to say I have no doubt about beating Serena. Playing that kind of tennis is not easy.
The distractions take effect when it's hot and you couldn't close out the second set. Will you fight your heart out in the third set? You know there's another tournament next week. Very few can do it.

VeraNuVirgosFan
Nov 25th, 2003, 07:19 AM

I remember when Anna first played Wimbledon and damn she was good and there was great times ahead for her but she blew it all with the modelling and all the rest, she came from the bottom and wanted to be famous and you can't blame her really.

However all thought Maria has taken on this modelling contract I think she can juggle both things. She seems to be very mature for a 16 year old and I think that will see her through it.
Yeah you've all said she was a little arsey on the show but shes young and shes been asked the same two questions since wimbledon.

1) How do you feel being compared to Anna
2)About your grunting

I think anyone would be a little fed up. She ain't the only player to make noise and shes already out done Anna in the singles titles.
Give the girl a break.

I think her dad will keep her grounded, he seems to be a big influence in her life. If you look at Anna's mum you can see why she turned out like she did, the woman used to create media hype all the time talking about Anna and her boyfriends, she wanted her to be big because she's living her dream through Anna. Martina's mum did the same and Alexanders S mum is doing it all the time.

All we can do is keep our fingers crossed that the lanky beauty keeps level headed and her chin up.

Well said.

You gotta figure getting asked the same questions time and time again, eventually you'll start getting aggitated. I know I would. So, I don't blame her. The main thing right now is for her to keep focused so the pressure doesn't cause the same issues on court that has cause other players the same demise even with what IMG throws her way. And I think she's got that down pat atm.

Hi Jojo! :wavey: I agree with you that Maria is focused on her tennis career and won't let her endorsements and potential endorsements distract her from the task at hand. Which is to become an elite tennis player.

Excellent post, adele_eve. :D I also think Maria's father Yuri will play a major role in keeping Maria focused on tennis.
