View Full Version : Why was Elena Dementieva not used against France??

Nov 21st, 2003, 09:03 AM

I still don't know why Dementieva wasn't chosen to play against France. I don't like Zvonareva... I couldn't beleive Tarpishev could substitute Dementieva for Zvonareva!! Dementieva is a MUCH better player, and would have won against Pierce easily. As it is, because of Zvonareva, Russia got beaten!!!

Anyone knows why Dementieva wans't chosen??

She was in the Doubles with petrova I think against France... but I also think that she was needed to play in the Singels... :(

I think Elena was sick. She had food poisoning, I believe.
Very unfortunate timing.

It appears that Elena Dementieva wasn't sick but that the Fed Cup captain Shamil Tarpischev chose Vera Zvonareva who is a counter puncher to play Fed Cup singles on a fast court ahead of power players Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova because she played better than they did in their sparring matches. This doesn't make tennis sense. If this is true and I believe it is, this is the worst bit of Fed Cup or Davis Cup captaining I have ever seen! Vera hadn't played a WTA Tour match in a couple of weeks and Elena was ready to go but Tarpischev had to ruin everything by over coaching. :fiery:

Thanks Cat. That makes sense. I know she was supposed to play in doubles, but he didn't even choose her for that neither. She went there for nothing. We all know that Dementieva excels when she plays for her country and has an excellent record. Last year she beat Mauresmo and I'm sure she would have beaten Pierce this year. I like Myskina as a right-hand for Dementieva, and Petrova, but not Zvonareva?? She is way too inexperienced for a semi-final. Dementieva has years of experience in Fed cups. I believe the reason not choosing her was rather political. Either somehow he lost faith in her or she did him something wrong, or else the Zvonareva party offered him a lot of money. These things happen in Russia.

As it is, thanks Tarpishev, you ruined a first Russia female Fed Cup win!

I still think Elena was ill somehow. If not, she would have played doubles. It's a dead rubber match, and it's like playing for pride. Thus, if nothing wrong with her health, she would have played.

You are right that there might be other factors. Money can affect his decision, but I don't think he lost faith in her cuz Tarpishev almost chose Lina K. to be Elena's double partner (if he did not lie about this). Elena is a great and dangerous player. She could definitely have won over Mary if she had played. She is one of the top Russian players at the moment.

I found her interview at YEC about playing Fed Cup on Euro Sport website. She said "I really like this tournament. I am very proud to play for Russia. It's the last tournament but the biggest one of the year. I will do my best, and I hope we will win this time." She was really happy to play for her country but something happened. No matter what it is, it's really sad.

We may never know what really happened. Even if Elena makes a statement, who knows if she's just trying to be diplomatic.
The bottom line is that Russia lost and Elena didn't play. And neither of those makes me happy.

Elena needs to rest and leave it behind her. I am sure she will work hard on her second serve. She improved it a lot at the YEC. She just needs to get used to her new service motion and have more confidence. She will definitely have a great season next year. I think she has great potential to do real damages.

Even if she was ill, Russia cvould have won. How hard was it to put Petrova in the singles?
