Tammy played only 3 clay tournaments this year.
Sarasota : lost second round.
Charleston : lost first round.
French Open : lost first round.

According to her 2004 schedule, she has committed to play Amelia Island, Charleston, Rome, Strasbourg and French Open. I think she is feeling confident in her ability after she's trained hard to improve her physical and movement. She may have better result than this year because she does not have points to defend in clay season. Just wait and see, hope she will be doing better and better on clay.

It's just that I don't think it's wise to play on green clay just before Fed Cup without having a week's break. She's better off taking those couple of weeks off and practise on hardcourts, and add the German Open before Rome instead. :)

30 tourneys is just way too many IMO, but I'm sure this subject to change as the season progresses next year. :)

Agree with you that she should better off taking those couple of weeks off and practise on hardcourts, and add the German Open before Rome instead. I think she want to stay longer in USA after the week of Miami which she's always doing every year. (This year she continued playing Sarasota and Charleston after Miami) Lot of things to do, say "hello" to her sister and brother (Janet and Chalee Tanasugarn) and meet her nephew and niece (Mikey and Dani).

I also think the same that 30 tournaments is too many for her and she said that she may adjust and change when the time comes.

I did not watch the match because they did not show on TV. I know Chia-Jung Chuang(TPE) is a good player, she is ranked around 300, hit the ball hard. The match was not playing on real grass court. It's not suit Tammy game, especially she said it's difficult moving on this kind of court.

I met Tammy before I left for Perth. She looks fit and lost her weight a lot. She is leaving for Gold Coast on 2 Jan.

Jiro is very kind to give the info...BTW, Nicky when Hsieh Su Wei was still active in her prime time as top junior player - Chuang was always ready to take her place...Now, Chuang is rating better than Hsieh...We all know what happened to Hsieh...Chuang is now ranked WTA 301 per December 29th, 2003! She is a good attacker and I remember she won 10K in Jakarta and Surabaya last year...2 weeks in a row! :bounce:

If my memory is correct, Tammy told me that you say "Hello from me" to her in Melbourne last year. Do you have chance to do the same this year ? I made more than 300 picture of Tammy and gave her before she left for Gold Coast. You should try to ask for those pictures with her autograph. i'm pretty sure she will be giving you if she bring those pictures from Thailand.

wow ... im suprised. yeh, i told her that you wished her all the best of luck during the australian open 2003. she was really nice and there was a reporter from ch 5 thailand around her. she was really happy to win her first round match over Drake in two sets. i actually asked her to sign an autograph on my thai flag and she was really surprised with my look and that i can speak thai. btw, she refused to sign on my flag as she told me she has never signed on a flag before but she did sign an autograph on my hat which was very kind of her. my ex bf and i were really happy when she talked to us. she's a sweetheart. :) (im not bi ;) )

i'll be going to the aus open this year and im looking forward to seeing our tammy soon. well, this year will be a bit different though coz i will be going to the open with friends.

oh, surely i will ask her for the pictures you mentioned.

Tammy just said about her first match of this year in "Tammyka" article that she is now still have rusty in her game. Her physical and mental are OK but she need some more match. She lost in single but playing double with Tartakova helped her a lot. Tammy and Tartakova have reached SF and Tammy now feel better in her game. She does not play double in next week Canberra because she want to focus only in single.

Tammy also talking about Maria Sharparova that they have committed to play double together in AO. But she need to confirm again because she still did not meet Maria since Luxembourg last year October.

Tammy will win the doubles cos she's with sharapova and both has an unbeaten record!!!

i dun see what's wrong with this year's draw...cos last year her round three match was against serena..which is much worse...this year davenport seems injured a bit and if tammy is ok... a few long rallies should wear davenport down...tammy could emerge victorious after three sets to the fourth round...

after all tammy did lose in two tight set against davenport in the toray pan pacific... so it's not impossibl...

Got to watch the match from the 2nd set delayed while they
waited for JHH's match to begin; and it just wasn't a good day for Tammy.
Granville get's the ball back; but Tammy's timing was really off today.
The serve toss was all over the place. Sometimes high, sometimes low,
sometimes a bit forward. It bothered Tammy, and ruined the reaction
time to hit return winners. There was a noticeable bit of wind going on
in the outside court, and this could've been why the ball toss was wayward
today. The ground strokes were not of the variety we all come to know
and count on from Tammy.

It's early in the season. Tammy can rebound and finally get some good
practice in. Ok. Let's not get to down over here. :)

okie!!! hate me for all you want tammy fans ... but i really want to say this now!!!

tammy!!! for goodness sake!!! work on your game.. your have to get used to all types of balls and have vicious weapons on your own!!! your consistency and wonderful backhand ain good enough!!!

i truly believe that you are the top 5 player type... but as of now you seem to be only able to beat ppl who are ranked lower than you and get upsetted by them sometimes too... come on!!! believe in yourself!!! you won mauresmo before and even took a set from capriati when she was still the aus open champion..

i hope you continue to work hard and learn a new thing or two and perhaps show us stuff like the match against patty and hantuchova where you were agressive!!!

no less than qfinals for all the grand slams now!!! and wimbledon where grass courts is your forte... i hope to see you reach semis and no less...

i know i probably sucked if i played against you and i have no right to comment on your game since mine is most probably worse...but i really dun wish to see you slide any further... you just lost loads of points at the aus open...up next is the toray where you will defend loads of points too so i hope all goes well....

ALL SAID AND DONE.... GOOD LUCK!!! I LOVE YOU AND MAY YOU END THE YEAR LIKE THIS!!!! WIN-LOSS RECORD: 125-3(ASSUMING SHE PLAYS 25 MORE TOURNAMENTS...)

I'M NOT CRAZY...I REALLY BELIEVE YOU ARE BETTER THAN WHAT YOU ARE PLAYING NOW....:)

Tammy just came back from Melbourne yesterday ( 24 Saturday ). She quoted her article in "Tammyka" on Sunday, 25 January that she's very disappointed with her early lost in the first round AO 2004. She has been training hard for 2004 year , she isn't happy with her performance because she could not play as good as she wanted to do. Tammy tried to come back in the 2nd set as she was up a break and took a lead 2-0 but her opponent was playing nothing to lose and did not let her to come back.

In double 2nd round, Tammy and Masha were forced to retire due to Masha got an injury (a lower left leg strain ). Masha said "sorry" to her and Tammy accepted her apology, acknowledged Masha's physical condition because Masha still have to play single match on the next day. Anyway Tammy and Masha will be paring up in Toray Pan Pacific Open 2004 in Tokyo.

It occured to me whilst watching Tammy's match. Granville was simply playing better tennis. Even if Tammy was playing some of her best tennis.... this match would have been a close 3 setter. Laura was more powerfull and served much stronger. Probably what was most beneficial to Laura was her defence.... Tammy would start painting lines.... but Laura ran down balls untill Tanmy missed.
Laura was not going to lose to anyone easy on that day.... even had she played Kim Clijsters!
Tammy has to work on being a little more aggressive... and probably get a bit more topspin on her backhand... its just too flat... on a rather windy day... keeping the ball in the court is much easier with topspin.

Benny

I agree, I think Tammy needs to improve, but I'm sure Tammy KNOWS she has to improve. One aspect of her game is probaly her consistancy she can be top 10 one day and the next lose to someone ranked 80 something.
I feel Tammy still has her best tennis to come and Tammy is a fighter who never gives up and would be the kind of person who is open for improvement.
She was obviously having a bad day and from the sounds of it from V.Melb, Granville was playing very well.
I know that soon Tammy will be playing great tennis and I wish her all the luck in the world for the rest of her 2004 season:D

I watched the match and really Tammy didn't play as well as she should have in the 1st set, but she really fought hard down 4-0 in the second to get it back to 4-5. She made Venus play one more shot and a lot of times in paid off. A solid second set performance and good to see she is still trying 110%.
Good LUCk in the doubles Tammy, well done on a good fight:worship:

TENNIS: OVER THE HILL?

Lerpong Amsa-ngiam
The Nation
Published on May 16, 2004

Thai ace has a nightmare start to her 2004 season

What now for Tamarine Tanasugarn? Her ranking has slumped to 56 in the world, her worst placing in five years, after having kicked off the season at 32.

She has suffered seven first round defeats in 10 tournaments, including a surprise early exit at the Australian Open where it was expected that she would reach at least round three. She has been on tour for more than a decade and will turn 27 next week. Is Tamarine approaching the final chapter of her career?

Recently, The Nation sat down to talk with the country’s No 1 female player about concerns that her tennis had gone downhill over the past five months. Is she now too old to pursue her dreams, and what could be a final challenge for her before she throws in the towel?

It was just a standard day for the tennis star, and she was taking a break from practice which had been interrupted by a tropical shower. She still looked relaxed, amiable and cheerful as always, having put behind her all the disappointing results of the first quarter of the year.

“I had a bad start this year losing the first round in Melbourne, my worst result there in many years. When I was about get back to my best, I had this ankle injury in Hyderabad,’’ Tammy said in explaining why she had plummeted out of the top 50.

On the way to defending the only trophy of her career in the Indian city, Tamarine collapsed on court while playing China’s Zheng Jie in the quarter-final. Although she managed to survive that contest to earn her only semi-final berth this year, the injured Tammy was in no condition to cause any problems to Russian Maria Kirilenko in the next match in which she surrendered tamely 3-6 2-6.

The injury also forced her to retire mid-match in Dubai and she withdraw from a tournament the following week in Doha. Since then she has gleaned just one win out of four matches in the United States.

“It was the wrong decision to go to the US when I was not well-prepared after that injury. So, I’m taking a break now to build up my physical condition for the French Open,’’ said Tammy who has skipped three significant clay court tournaments in Europe. She is scheduled to have her only warm-up on the slow red dirt in Strasbourg before heading for Roland Garros.

Like Paradorn Srichaphan, Tamarine is vulnerable on clay as the surface slows down the speed of her attacking shots and restricts her movement. However with her eyes firmly fixed on being among the top 32 seeds at Wimbledon, Tamarine cannot afford early round exits in the two clay events.

“I need to win matches, especially in the French Open and I’m working hard now to make that happen. I am focusing on strengthening my thigh muscles because you have to slide a lot on clay. After playing a couple of clay tournaments in the US, I felt so stiff on those muscles and realised how much I need to improve them,’’ said Tamarine who has managed to win only one out of five matches on clay since last year.

The Thai number one probably can’t wait for the clay court season to end and the grass season to begin, for it’s on this surface that she feels more at home.

“I always feel lively once the grass season starts. I feel very comfortable on it. It suits my game and it makes me feel like hitting the balls,’’ said Tammy, obviously keen to talk about her favourite surface.

After peaking at 19 in the world exactly two years ago, Tamarine has been nowhere near the top 20 since. At the age of 27 and having just experienced a frustrating run of first round exits, the question has to be asked: Is her time coming to an end?

“Definitely not,” she shoots back. “No one can keep up their good form all the time. But what’s more important to me is that I haven’t reached my goal yet. So I can’t see myself hanging up my racquet in the near future.”

A singles crown in Hyderabad last year, wins over elite players like 1997 French Open champion Iva Majoli and world No 4 Amelie Mauresmo, five straight fourth round berths at Wimbledon and the emergence of the Thai Fed Cup team in the World Group Play-offs. What remains the ultimate challenge before she says farewell to tennis?

“I want to reach the top 10. I know it’s not such an easy thing to do at 27 when I can’t recover from exhaustion as quickly as when I was younger. But I will try step by step and start with Wimbledon where I feel quite confident,’’ said Tamarine, who draws inspiration from the legendary Martina Navratilova who refuses to give up. “If a 47-year-old like Martina still has the fire to play, then I shouldn’t feel weak or discouraged. Although I don’t think I could be as strong as she is when I’m 47, I take her as a role model for not letting age stand in my way.”

Tammy d. 4-Maleeva 0-6,6-4,6-2

What's player said:

“She killed me in the first set, everything was a winner. She was even hitting aces on second serves. But I fought hard and got back into the game. It really was a high quality match. I love coming to Birmingham, I like the courts here and grass really suits my game.”

"I wasn't aggressive in the first set and I started to realise I had to make her do something," said Tanasugarn.

The total different of 2 players is playing on important points. Ai did it better than Tammy. Tammy had so many chances in 2nd set as she had 10 times BP but could convert only 3. Ai did 5 of 9. Ai also has better mental game, she made a come back even she was down 0-40.

Disappointed that she lost because she has very good chance for this year. may be she got too tried from yesterday long double match (3.5 hrs). In double match, she should won like 6-4 or 7-5 in 3rd set because she was leading 5-4, 6-5 and 11-10. But she lost !!! so bad !!! That made me hurt because she tried but lost the match.

Tammy will be back to Thailand on 30 June with TG 917.

From Today's Matichon newspaper:
" I'm disappointed that I could not pass through to QF, I'm not fresh enough and did not get well recovery from double match which I had to play 30 games in final set. I played too much and wanted to do well in both singles and doubles. I did not play well on important points, I have so many chances but could not do it. Sugiyama played well and quick and deserved to win " said Tammy. Her coach also said that one thing which affected her game is she got too tried from long double match and Tammy did not play well on important points.

Good luck Tammy in Fed Cup.

Give me a break. As a tammy fan, that is a weak excuse.
Other female players are playing singles, mixed and ladies doubles, they can handle it.

If Tamarine, as a proffessional player cannot handle a long match, then come out THE NEXT DAY and play another tough match... she simply shouldn't be there.
Look at Sugiyama and Saurez... they play up to 6 sets a day! Please don't pity tammy for having to play 5 sets over two days.
The reason for Tamarines loss is DEFINENTLY not tiredness... if it is...that is an embarresment.
I think Sugiyama outplayed her... simple!
I luv tammy... i hope she does well in her next event! :)

Tammy quoted her message to her fans in "Tammyka" articles that she had so many chance to win the match against Bartoli. She was leading 6-2, 4*-3 and 40-0 on her service game but she could not close it out that game. She said the weather in LA is so hot and dry and she still can't adjust her physical condition. She said she and Maria V-K were playing so well in double.

She might withdraw from Acura qualifying if she plays SF in LA. [ Lucky !!! the tournament let Tammy play ( Tammy vs Kremer) on Sunday ]

In Acura Classic, Tammy also paring up with Maria V-K again. Tammy said she called Maria S. and asking if she want to play double because they have committed to play double together, but Maria S. want to focus on her single at this moment.

Tammy plays Asagoe in the 1st round which is a pretty bad draw
I expect she can't wait for this year to end

I dunno if you guys watch her live matches... but actually she has the skills... but her huge problems lies in the conversion of break points and game points...

she'll start off well and then in the middle of the match when it gets tight, she loses it for a while and starts to go all haywire... which is a pity since she started well...

i think she could be nervous or unlucky in terms of converting... i always remember having tons of break points but conversion is very little...remember..by converting a break point easily, it lowers the opponent's morale and they will be nervous and not think that they can fight off break points...

also, sometimes tammy seems to give up after the first set...especially against higher ranked opponents (eg top 30) the few time she doesn't is during wimbledon and on grass and also when she was aggressive like last year's US Open run where she was so determined to break the opponent's serves(she was way in the baseline to attack the second serve!!)

I may not be her coach, but her slump is definately a mental thing...her match against dulko showed how clean her strokes are but she hits the net as returns a few times and this was clearly something the old tammy wouldn't have done cos she's know for accuracy and consistency... and she was totall disturbed by the ace which was called as double fault..

i heard in shanghai she was upset too and double faulted at match point...so tammy get over it!! about time you realize the top 30 is where you belong...

Go Tammy!!! :bounce:

Tammy just trounced Shinobu today in Tokyo 6-0, 6-4...I have a good feeling about these last couple weeks from Tammy, she's starting to have more emphatic quality wins. Maybe this will get her out of her funk. Thankfully her ranking is climbing back up, now she's at 67.

Tammy defeated Craybas today, this is a good win for her and hopefully she can defeat Kapros and make it into the semi-finals. Like everyone, I'm concerned about Tammys game but she has it in her, and I think she can return to the peak of her game.

She plays Eugenia Linetskaya in Tashkent
Linetskaya is an up-coming russian and fairly dangerous but Tammy should get past her ;)

Is it certain Tammy won't be playing any more tournaments this year?Pretty sure that she will play at least one tourney in Quebec, CAN because she has point to defend ( 60 points in Pattaya last year). I'm not sure about tournies in Europe.

Tammy was in the qualies list for Zurich yet she's no longer in it...

why did she withdraw?

didn't her early exit in Tashkent gave her more than enough rest?

it's a tier one.. by qualifying she would have gotten tons of points...

I really hope she runs a lot...hey were showing the Japan Open semis delayed and I was very disappointed at Tammy who hardly ran for the ball..

When she was playing last year's US Open and Wimbledon every year, she would save every shot...I really hope it's not due to fatigue or something...
