France clinch tight Cup match
5 January 2004

Unseeded France clinched a thrilling mixed doubles match to upset fourth-seeded Russia in the $1-million ITF Hyundai Hopman Cup mixed teams tournament played at Perth’s Burswood Dome tonight. (Monday).

French pair Fabrice Santoro and Amelie Mauresmo won the mixed 6-3, 6-4 after the singles rubbers had been split.

World No. 4 Mauresmo clinched the opening rubber 6-2, 7-6 against Anastasia Myskina, with the tiebreaker going seven points to two.

Russia’s former world No. 1 Marat Safin balanced up the match with a blistering 6-3, 6-3 win over Fabrice Santoro, ending a streak that has seen just one win by the Russian in eight clashes.

The mixed was a hard-fought affair, with the French finally remaining cool in the second set crisis, frittering away two match points on Safin’s service before Santoro served it out to win the Tie.

 Linnie it was Amélie who held her serve to love late on in the second!

Transcript - Amelie Mauresmo (France)
5 January 2004

(Mauresmo) …I think I came out a little stronger at the end – especially in that tie-break. But yeah, very happy to be here and happy to play that way.

There were certainly some very strong rallies in that match; a pretty good way to start the season really.

(Mauresmo) Yeah, it’s good. I can feel where I am, what I need to work on, what is already good. I’ve worked pretty hard on my physical training and I feel very comfortable out there so…good.

You’ve had some great moments representing France, especially the Fed Cup last year. What does it mean to you now to be at your first Hopman Cup?

(Mauresmo) It’s always good and a great honour to represent your country. It’s a special mixed event, you know, we’re not used to that. I like being here with Fabrice also. He’s a very nice guy and I’m sure he’s going to do well now on the court.

And good to be fit at an Australian summer, compared to last year.

(Mauresmo) Yeah, I was so frustrated not to be here last year and I’m so happy to be back here in the sun. Even if we don’t play outside it’s still great to be here.

And what can you tell us about Fabrice? It’s going to be interesting isn’t it, in the singles, but he’s got great doubles credentials, hasn’t he?

(Mauresmo) He’s got a pretty good record against Marat (Safin) in singles and, you know, we’ll see how it goes in a few minutes and I think we’re going to have a very good time in doubles. He’s a great player so we’ll see.

Well, a great start – well done Amelie.

(Mauresmo) Thank you.

Amelie, a wonderful match in singles for you today, you must be very pleased with the way you played.

(Mauresmo) Yeah, not only the singles, I think we had some good times and some fun in the mixed doubles with Fabrice so…it was the first time we’ve played together and it was very nice.

That’s right – a fantastic exhibition from you both. We all enjoyed it, but Amelie, a bit about yourself…you’re obviously very fit after a year last year where you had some injuries. You’re looking for new things in 2004.

(Mauresmo) Yeah, it was a good match against Anastasia for the first match of the year so I’m very happy to win this one. I think I played good tennis and I’m sure I’m going to keep improving. Of course 2004 I want it to be even better than the last one.

And at the Australian Open in 1999 you made the finals, so Rebound Ace is a good surface for you.

(Mauresmo) Yeah, it was good for me a few years ago and every year, you know, I play well in Australia. I couldn’t come last year because of injury so I’m very happy to be back and hopefully we (are) going to go further.

Fabrice, Marat was running pretty hot today but you really showed the way in the doubles, well done.

(Santoro) Thank you. Thanks a lot. Thanks to Amelie too.

I think you showed us today why you’ve had so much success in doubles. What do you think is your secret in the doubles?

(Santoro) Maybe because I’m a little bit older now and it’s better to play on half of the court.

But you do have a good partner here…Amelie played well.

(Mauresmo)(I think they mean Santoro  ;)) You know, today is a big day for me because it’s the first mixed doubles I win ever. But it’s also the first mixed doubles I play with Amelie.

Well, you showed at the Hopman Cup why the mixed doubles is so important winning the tie. Congratulations to you both.
