Port Pirie bronco ;)

Two matches I'd rather not have in round 1....Evie v Christina and Monique v Samantha :(

I love all four girls but I'd like to see Christina and Monique get the wins.

Tough match for Dubravka...and Jaslyn should be considered favorite against Muller

Honestly I don't see much joy this week....we'll probably get a few quarter finalists, and sure there are a couple girls capable of winning the whole thing, but overall I'm not getting my hopes up.

TBE has posted yesterday's results. Good to see that Trudi won over a player ranked much higher than herself, Duebbers - 196. She must have a bit of form going on at the moment.

How do you think Casey will go in R2 against Abigail Spears who appears to be on form at the moment?

No-one deserves a wildcard into the Australian Open.

At the moment I think Trudi Musgrave leads the field...no offence, but that would be quite emarrassing having our so called up an coming talent being trumped bu a 26 year old doubles specialist....oh well, go get em Trudi ;) :D

Go Trudi, think she is now the only Aussie left in Singles and Doubles. The doubles combination with Spear seems to work well. Will be interesting to see if despite having such good results, much better than the majority of the Oz gals, if TA give her a wild card or pass her by.

I have to say only Casey and Trudi have done anthing deserving of WCs so far.

Musgrave wins Port Pirie

PORT PIRIE - Novacastrian Trudi Musgrave won her first title on this year's Uncle Tobys Tour when she defeated Anouska Van Exel from the Netherlands in todayís final at Port Pirie. Musgrave won after a close first set 6-4 6-0.

Both players started todayís final nervously by losing the opening three service games. The conditions were very difficult as an overnight change in the weather had seen the temperature drop from around 40 degrees on Saturday to the mid-20s accompanied by gusty winds.

The first set developed into a "break-a-thon" as both players had difficulty tossing the ball up straight and therefore they were forced to take a great deal of speed off the serve. This allowed their opponent to attack the return of serve so it became a situation of who would hold enough serves to win the set. In the end it was Musgrave who prevailed by holding serve to lead 5-4 before again breaking Van Exel to take the first set.

Van Exelís challenge continued to be blown off course as she dropped her opening serve of the second set and some very clever play from Musgrave saw her not lose a game to wrap up the match. Hitting her ground shots with more topspin, Musgrave made fewer errors than her Dutch opponent who hit the ball harder and flatter but produced many more errors in the 58-minute match.

Trudi and Abigal also won the doubles 62 62

GO TRUDI!!!

Well done Trudi. Think she just about has a lock on the AO wildcard. Has she played AO before?

The Australian Unity Aust Open wildcard is basically hers!

Only Evie, Bryanne and Stosur can knock her off and only by winning the last two challengers and having Trudi perform badly in both!

And yes Trudi has played in 2 Aust Open main draws before. I saw her lose to Suarez 6-2 7-5 once and cant remember the other time

I'm glad that Trudi just about has the wc as it is nice to see someone who would normally be overlooked get in. Maybe she is going to be the next Nicole Pratt and develop as a player at a later age. I hope that she and Abigail Spears will play doubles at the AO as they seem to be a good combination. Another positive about her getting the WC (fingers crossed) is it will get her off to a good start financially for 2004.

I'm always puzzled each season why all the Aussie girls aren't playing every one of these challengers because it must be financially cheaper for them to play locally rather than foray into the overseas circuit. There doesn't seem to be a lot of them in this tourney at all.

Go Trudi, hopefully she will get a win over her mystery qualifier in the first round and wrap up that WC.

broncosven
Nov 17th, 2003, 09:28 AM
i dont think many if any are playing overseas

alot are injured like Kriz, Dellacqua, McQuillian etc

this shows how bad our ranking situation is, always shos in the entry lists to our aussie tournies in january with barely any aussies getting direct entry to MD or Qualies

Nehow in qualifying for This chally Watson, Dittman, Hewson and Pinchback are into final qualifing round with another couple aussies which i cant remeber.

lets hope they all qualify as there is only 10 aussies in main draw

I do wonder why so many of these girls are constantly injured. Has to be something to do with their training methods.

Well I'm sure the list doesn't stop there...

Apparently Sam was experimenting with the evil conniving Alexis, oops I mean Sarah, and that relationship is no more. She apparently has a new beau....(according to a poster who gave us some goss a few months ago).

Oh geez, myself, Ausboy and louloubelle may as well start our very own Days Of Their Lives tabloid thread in this forum...

Anyway, tennis. What tough losses for Bryanne and Monique. Very disappointed :( loulou, you are right....with a win here, Bryanne would have made a SF which is pretty respectable. Sure she has been in good form but she's yet to pass the QF, and whilst it's certainly an improvement from losing in countless 1st rounds, we know she can do (and has done) way better...but at least she learnt how to win again.

I dare say Evie may find her ranking down to 400 in a year's time  :o

no need to dare say

she needs to pull her head out and begin to remember how to play

Yeah you would think that Bryanne will get another wildcard since she has performed well and is still in the running for the Wildcard.

Sophie Ferguson has yet to receive a wildcard so she might get lucky

Also Cindy Watson hasnt received one yet either! She performed well this week so I think she deserves one.

So they are my three guesses! Bryanne, Cindy and Sophie

As for Bryanne, it's these matches she always loses - she sets up these opportunities but never follows through. However nice to see her winning some matches here and there because what I saw 10 months ago she didn't want to be on court.

Christina and Mirelle had SHOCKERS!!!

Trudi and Brianne both should of won

Our tennis stocks right now are in absolute shatters, looks like a dismal season is up ahead nless some players can pull there heads out from there asses

I think you are being too harsh!

Most of the Aussie girls had horror draws!

The poor performances were by Bryanne Stewart, Christina Wheeler and Lauren Breadmore. These three girls had the easiest matches!

Its been a long few weeks for Bryanne, having to qualify a few times and then doing OK in both singles and doubles. Obviously after winning such a close 2nd set she was stuffed.

As for Christina

And Lauren - Im starting to beleive that the form we saw last year and at the AO was the best she's capable of and generally these results are maybe what to expect.

At least Sam won!! Lets hope this tounie will get her back on the right. :bounce:

WHY ISN'T Jaslyn playing??
She was having a good run?? Is it because she is watching Davis Cup this week?
and is Casey injured??

Have to agree with Bros, this is a pretty sad performance.

If these girls can't string together a couple of wins in $25k challengers it is not a good sign for bigger tourneys.

Sam has had an absolute shocker. How can she go for winning a couple of rounds at AO, defeating Top 30 player and then not be able to win against players ranked 300+.

Evie, hope you are able to redeem you performances over the past 6 weeks and take this tournament out.

Credit to Evie, at least she is perservering and trying to play herself out of this slump.

Everyone knows she has the ability to win this week. With her its just a matter of regaining her confidence and every win helps. Im hoping she can get past Jeon! I feel she's a good chance!

I think the most frustrating thing about Evie is there is no doubt that she has ability and the talent to be in Top 100. Has anyone heard any rumours abotu what is going on with her?
