View Full Version : Hingis will lose quite a few points

I'm not sure when the Zurich points come off. They may have actually come off this week, since the tournament seems to be a week later this year. However, she ended last year Win, Win, Final, Win. So she's basically not going to defend over 1000 points.

13 Nov 2000 CH - Tour Championships
04 Nov 2000 FR - Philadelphia USA
21 Oct 2000 CH - Moscow RUS
09 Oct 2000 CH - Zurich SUI

so she could drop to 5th or lower? WOW!

Nono, she won't drop any lower than #4 in my opinion. Right now she's #3, but Lindsay's probably gonna pass her if she wins today's final and if she gains some more points in Munich and Linz I think (don't know exactly where she'll play).
Martina can only become #5 or lower if Kim and/or Justine and/or Amélie gain over 1000 points in the coming month or so, and I don't think that's even possible if they win everything from now until the end of the season. (maybe if they can get enough quality points).
So Martina's probably gonna and the season as the world's number 4.

Actually Martina is Number 2 and will remain there no matter what happens in the final.

Davenport will either be 346 points Martina
or 449 points after the final...

1. Capriati 4867
2. Hingis 4842
3. Davenport 4393 or 4496
4. V Williams 4333
5. Clijsters 3280
6/7 Mauresmo 2917
7/6 Henin 2899 or 3025
8 Seles 2672
9. Serena 2501
10. Dokic 2343

If Lindsay wins Zurich (which she should), Linz (is she even entered?) and the WTA champs, she will be year end #1.

Too bad the WTA Champs are on hardcourt. I am sure Lindsay would prefer playing on carpet.

A Dear friend posted this on another board...

Well, if Martina is out for the rest of the season, things could get really troubling for her. It looks like the predictions that she won't be a contender for retaking the #1 spot any time soon will come true. Bummer it has to be like this. I'd rather see her take her knocks on court.

But she has 1150 points to defend, virtually all of which she will now lose, putting her down under 4000 points.

Meanwhile, Jennifer has 227 points to defend, Venus has 205 and Lindsay has her win from Philly which will drop off (can't be defended because the season ends earlier). I'm not sure how many points that is but I am guessing in the vicinity of 260-300. She also has first round points from the Chase, for a total of around 350, let's say (can anyone be more exact?)

Lindsay plays Zurich next week, Jennifer plays Zurich and Luxemburg, Venus is scheduled for Linz. So they could be picking up more points there. In fact, it's probable.

Then comes Munich. Last year, Venus did not play the Chase and Lindsay and Jennifer both bombed out in the first round. That won't happen this year. I'm betting one of those three takes the title and the other two do well, so those will all be plus points. Each of these women is virtually certain- barring injury or withdrawal- to increase her point total from what it is now. And I think you can see where that leaves Martina.....

As for next year, I think her much-vaunted "consistency" will hurt her unless she seriously revamps her game. Because she reached a lot of semis and because she is not likely to do any better than that unless she does a major overhaul, she's likely to keep going DOWN in her point total. In fact, the early part of the year is loaded wih MORE pitfalls for her, because her three titles all came in the first two months, along with two of the three finals
she reached.

Just the facts.

Lindsay D has also to defend her win in Linz
last year (303p). Philadelphia was worth 400 p
an the Chase 54p so that makes for a total
of 757 points.

Cokkie , Philly is a tier 2 touney, 400 pts. is way too high... And isn't Linz about 250?? I will have to check...

so what if she's gona lose a few points

i dun think it matters
if not for the better
if she's number five
the top, williams, capriati fans would be happier
less bashin for hingis
and she could always come back the following year
it'd be just as hard if she was 2
