she will most likely not be a seed and be versinng alot of people ranked higher and she has 127pts from Hobart to defend

although i live in Sydney and will get to see her i really want her to defend her Hobart title

She is looking forward to competing in Sydney this year, she only played Hobart last year because her rank was too low and they didnt give her a WC

i think if she beleives she can defend the points which i would believe would be winning 2 matches ( and then add the qualy points) then it would be worth it

also il be working there so id love to see her since anna wont be there - need a blonde chick to support there

I think she can go far if she plays as well as she has shown to be apable of. ;)
For example her last match against Chanda: Chanda is a top ten girl and Alicia took a set off her and could have won the match.

I believe she really can go far and good on her for taking that chance and setting herself a bigger hurdle to overcome. She will get the chance to play more top tournaments as her rank rises so she may aswell start mixing with the best players. THATS WHERE ALICIA BELONGS!!

It would be nice for her to defend the Hobart Title but she will get the chance to win many more tournaments in her career if I predict correctly.
(Also Adidas gets more media coverage- including TV- so it will mean we can all watch AND other Australians who don't know much about tennis will get to see Alicia and get the chance to support her.)

There are so many variables to consider; she might get a really bad draw and go out in the first round...which is possible with all these top players playing there. or she has the chance to get some good quality wins under her belt before the aus open and along with that, some good points that would cover her for not defending hobart. i think its a risky decision.....but hopefully it works out well for her. :)

I think it's a good move from Alicia. She has proven over the past year she can compete with the top girls and even clam a few scalps. :) So deserves to be playing Sydney.
And of course it would be nice if Australia's #1 would be playing Australia's top lead-up tournament ;)

Best of luck Alicia :D

Alicia's much better than Anna, anyway ;) And besides, she's done at least one thing Anna will never do . . .

I thought titleholder's were obliged to defend that title the following year? Does anyone know anything about that?

dont think thats true

look at Lleyton Hewitt and Adelaide and then playing in the Hopman cup

and Justine Henin won canberra and then didnt go back the next year

yeah but Henin made RG semis and Wimbledon final in 2001 the year she won canberra so then went to sydney as top 10 player and seed. That's a bit different.

Playing Sydney Molik could face a player seeded 5-8 in round1, and sydney always get's a good field so assuming top 4 seeds are say kim, henin, serena and davenport (just assuming they play) that means molik could face any of Myskina, Dementieva, Petrova, Zvonareva, Sugiyama,Mauresmo, capriati, venus, hantuchova, shnyder, dokic - if she plays, or rubin in round 1  So ieven if she doesn't draw a seed it will be an incredibly difficult match.

I personally think she should defend Hobart. Becuase firstly, she should win some matches there which would be a good lead in to AO and good for her confidence. And secondly because part of making it up the rankings is dealing with pressure and having to attempt to defend a title is pressure she has never dealt with before and so would be a great experience. Also her ranking would slip quite abit if she didn't do well in Sydney. But having said that can understand why she is playing sydney, sponsored by adidas and aussie # 1 so TA would want her there, this year the cutoff for Sydney was incredibly high, also it was in 2002 as well i remeber Ai was ranked around 30 and was in qualies  do you think Alicia will need a WC or get straight in?

Hmm Quallies would be good coz she could gain alot of pts but also she could lose in Quallies and then if she quallified she would prob face one of the seeds
