Quebec, Canada – Second seeded Russian Maria Sharapova will take center stage on Thursday night at the $170,000 Bell Challenge

The 16 year-old will face Belgian Els Callens in the second round of the tournament, after receiving a first round bye.

Sharapova will be looking for revenge after losing 6-7 (3), 1-6 to Callens in their only previous meeting in Miami earlier this year.

Top seed Mary Pierce will play her first match at the event when she takes on Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic in the day session.

Meanwhile, Sharapova won her first match at the event on Wednesday night when she partnered with Marion Bartoli of France in the doubles competition. The pair scored a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ansley Cargill of the U.S.A., and South African Kim Grant.

Cool! :D

Anyway I hope Maria brings some of that fearless 16 yo energy to the next few matches, and then really kicks off in Australia. She has a fine record in Melbourne and I am confident that she can put it together there. If Serena and Marat Safin can come there on apparently low confidence and do well then surely she can too.
