2003 started out much like 2002 for Serena Williams, in a winning way. She had a 21 match winning streak which saw her make history as only the 5th woman in the tennis era to win four straight major slam titles, and saw her collect her second straight Miami masters title. While no clay court titles came to her this year, Serena showed why she was a champion playing well with two semi final apearences and a finals appearence in the major clay events. Her title drought ended when she sucessfully defended her Wimbeldon championship winning her second major in 2003 and her sixth overall. But Serena nor her fans would know that the sobering image of Serena acheiveing sucess after a heartbreaking French Open loss two weeks earlier would be the last that we would see of terror faboulous for 2003. While many unfairly questioned Serenas pulling out of tournements citing a sore knee, her true fans knew that she wasnt here to hand out free points and to not make an effort to keep the number one ranking that she had worked soo hard to acheive in the first place without a valid reason. That reason would come in the summer as Williams would have to have knee surgery for a knee that has given her trouble really since her teenage years. Serena would lose the chance to win a million dollars by defending her US Open crown, at a place when she has played well in alll of her years of playing tennis. But Williams would lose someone far more valuable than any trophy or prize money- Her oldest sister, Yetunde Price to violence that is all too familar. So fans, take heart, while the second half of 2003 for our girl hasnt been very bright, there is always next year. Serena will come back healthy, hungry and ready to bust ass to get that number one rank back. Good Luck Serena! This is one fan that is gonna be pulling for you all the way.
