Yeah that's nice FedCup success for us. :)
Given the fact that we have only just 3 (ouch) professional players...

May 21st, 2004, 08:08 PM
Why is there no interest in Baltic tennis! I think it sad for only obatafan and vutt post in here.

Poor Maret Ani and Kaia Kanepi lost in the second round of Qs in Roland Garros. Maret lost to Fernandez 16 26 and Kaia lost to Rittner 57 62 26

Is Maret playing doubles with Libuse?

May 21st, 2004, 08:30 PM
Hi Annika!

Maret is playing doubles with Manu! They did quite well 2 weeks ago in Rome by reaching QF.
They should play in doubles RG main draw to.

If we speaking about lack of interest then I'm sorry to say that even in my country lot of people feel that ranking below 100 does not mean a lot despite the fact that Kaia was junior RG champion. So yeah it's kind of sad...

May 21st, 2004, 08:34 PM
That is nice to see Maret in RG doubles main draw :)

I understand that people can be quite not caring. I am surprised that the many people from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from the board are not writing though. There are many of them, and yet you and obatafan are the ones that maintain it all by yourselves! Hopefully I can write often too :)

Jun 16th, 2004, 05:11 PM
Maret has reached the final round of qualifying, beating Vaidisova and today Cho! :)

Go Maret!

Jun 17th, 2004, 08:15 AM
Yeah go Maret. Main draw is waiting...

Jun 17th, 2004, 11:42 PM
She lost to Razzano today :(

I thought she had a real chance

Jun 18th, 2004, 09:04 PM
Yeah, it's really sad that Maret didn't qualify for the main draw in Wimbledon, and in addition it's also bad that she doesn't get much attention, not even from "real" tennis-fans. But the most beautiful girls are outside 100 or just in Top100 like perebiynis for example... I would like to see playing some other girls than just always the same Hantuchova, Henin, Mauresmo and them who we already know... Go Maret, you will make it again to a main draw soon. I believe in you...

...so when I can finally see her playing in a match? She is soooooo cute!!!

Jun 22nd, 2004, 11:34 AM
Maret :bigcry:

I thought Maret would beat Virginie, who played awful in previous Wimbledons. Oh well, go qualify for US Open. Where is Liachoviciute this year? Has she retired?

Liga Dekmeijere has qualified for a $10K event in (i think) Bastad. :D

Thanks for making Baltic players cheering thread. Tennis isn't a popular kind of sport in Latvia therefore I'm very proud that someone else from another country cheers for our girls. Even if they not having so good results as we would want but still they are our girls.

Thanks again!

Besides congratulations to Liga!! She along with Matic (GER) def. Strycova/Voskobojeva 2:6; 6:2; 6:4 at the Rogers cup in Montreal. That is a great result!

In the next round they will play with pair Tanasugarn/Huber. That will be very hard match but anyway good luck!!!

Well done to Liga :D

She has been having better results in singles recently, hopefully she can pull it together like she does in doubles! Anzela on the other hand is in a terrible slump. She will probably retire this year . There is also Kuzmina as a promising player!

I really wonder why there are no challenger events in the Baltic states? Is it a lack of facilities? That would help to increase the popularity of tennis there!

Aug 5th, 2004, 06:55 PM
I don't know about other Baltic states but here, in Latvia aren't appropriate facilities. Here are few (I don't know precisely, but I think two or three) courts where we can play our Davis cup matches. There are small stands for about 500 or maybe 1000 people maximum. I know that the biggest tennis facility is in Lielupe, near Riga. Almost all our courts are clay courts. And I know that we have one man's satelite tournament in Lielupe.

But it would be great if someone here assume an initiative to modernize our main tennis courts to pretend organize higher level tournaments. But unfortunately I don't think that someone could assume an initiative to do it. But anyway I hope that it could happen.

But Dekmeijere/Matic lost yesterday to 4th seed Tanasugarn/Huber - 4:6; 4:6. But anyway I think its a good result for her. And score says that obvious there was a battle or at least Dekmeijere/Matic was displaying resistance to their opponents.

And I didn't hear anything about Zguna possible retirement. That is a first hear to me.

Margit is tearing up the British Challengers at the moment! She won a tough Glasgow tournament and is looking unstoppable in Sunderland this week.

Anzela also had a better tournament recently, reaching her first $25K QF :D

Edita Liachoviciute must have retired  :(

Margit Rüütel jumped in rankings thanks to two good turnaments from 609 to 301!!
WOW! Congrats! :)

Maret has had a decent return to form from Poitiers, winning three rounds of Q and beating Bychkova in R1 of the maindraw, before pushing Mikaelian to a close three-setter.

Kaia found it tough coming back from injury  and hasn't played since August, when she lost to Cho and Bielen-Zarska :o

Lina won a $25K in Lafayette :D but has since stalled in form

Aurelija finally returned to competition but is not exactly setting the world alight. She has struggled in $10K qualies and may find it a bit longer to get back in the swing of things.

Both Irina Cybina and Juliya Gotovskyte have obtained rankings :)

Irina Kuzmina has slipped into #2 in the Latvian rankings ahead of Anzela. Liga and Anzela's form has slipped considerably.

*revives thread*

Maret has been probably the busiest of the Baltic Babes ;) With an Australian programme. She reached the second qualifying round in Canberra, defeating Obata :fiery: before falling to Kloesel :o. She did the same at AO Qualies beating McCain and then falling to Gubacsi. At the 75K Ortisei she won through to the QF before falling to top seed Strycova.

Kaia still injured

Margit is almost past Kaia in the rankings. She has only played one tournament this year, falling in the first round of 25K Sunderland to Sakowicz. She won today though in Redbridge, although her victim escapes me ;)

Anet Kaasik seems to have disappeared this year also.

Onto Lithuania, Lina Stanciute seems to be the only active Lithuanian at the moment . She lost to Natalie Grandin in first rond of 25K Rockford in three sets, but has qualified for 75K Midland this week :D and plays her first round match tonight!

Aurelija has lost her ranking after her abortive comeback at the end of last year  Any news on that front?

Egle Petrauskaite received a wildcard into the qualies of the Miami 10K, losing 57 16 to Inoue in the first round. It was her first tour match since August 2003.

The Latvians: Liga is continuing her horrendous form :o I can't remember when i last saw that she had won :(. She is entering loads of high tiered events and never winning :o. This continued when she was in the Tier I Qualifying draw in the Pan Pacific, losing 16 06 to Mayumi Yamamoto.

Irina Kuzmina entered a couple of 10Ks in Britain recently, winning one match in Tipton against Claire Ricketts, but lost in the second round and then in the first round of Hull to Vranceau. She then edged out Fong in Q1 of Sunderland 25K, but fell to Llewellyn in the second round.

Nothing from Anzela so far in 2005

Get better soon Latvians!

Thats about it ;) Let's hope it gets better soon, and good luck Margit and Lina this week!

 Fairly quiet in here. Where are the Baltic girls?

I met Lina Stanciute last February at the Memphis tournament; she won her 1R qualifier, but lost in the 2R. A very nice girl.

Toward the end of the week, she told me she was going to play in the 50K at St. Paul, MN. I told her I'd try to see one of her matches there, but unfortunately she lost in the 1R there on Sunday, and I didn't arrive till Monday, and she'd already left. :awww: I hope she plays Memphis this year again; if so, I'll see her there.

We don't hear much from the Baltic states here in the US. If they can get a breakthrough, you'll probably see more activity here. I'm sure most people don't know who they are at this point. You have to be a pretty good tennis junkie to pick up on their names.
