I was so proud of Amelie for her comeback wins in the semi and final matches of Philadelphia and am looking forward to how the confidence translates into her play in Los Angeles. She's capable of taking out Kim and making the final. Allez Amelie!

MoMo's my favorite active player. She reminds me so much of Gabriela...with a better serve

Couldn't agree with you more - Sabatini had these wonderful spins and volleys all of which Momo has. Her serve is better than Gabis but she'll need to do a lot of work with it in the winter months - all those double faults don't help her!

She really needed to win that match, too. C'mon, Momo, regroup. Now ya gotta beat Kim and Elena D; no more room for error. :fiery:

Harju.
Nov 6th, 2003, 04:57 AM
Chanda and Elena will probably be squeeked by Kim :o And this is the chance for Momo. She needs to regroup and fight to win her two matches especially against Kim!!

maya
Nov 6th, 2003, 06:15 AM
Well that was NOT good. What happend in the middle of the match? She was playing perfect until 2:0 in the second set, almost didn't miss a shot and then she started to miss or misshit everything  ... She looked tired.Chanda played good the whole match, though.

From the good side - now we know that she can play realy fantastic here (for almost an hour - now she has to do it just a bit longer ;) ).

Good luck in the next match Amelie! Don't fall asleep in the middle :D!

Good luck to Momo in her remaining two RR matches! I wish she and Chanda had been in different groups. Now I can sort of appreciate how the Williamses feel. Happiness for one player is tempered by sadness for the other. Allez Momo!

From Amélie:
"The first two sets were very tended and difficult. Behind, the tiredness accumulated in Philadelphia (note: where she gained the title this Sunday) was felt ", she explained. "I am very disappointed and really irritated by the way in which I lost. I was not able to finish the match in two sets whereas I had the break in the second set.
"That will not be easy to forget disappointment, but I must arrive at positiver as of the débriefing that we will make with Loïc Courteau and Guy Forget (note: the captain of the team of France of EDF Cup present in Los Angeles). I must think that I still have the possibility of qualifying me."

Gotta get right back on the horse - first match up today against Elena.

M*RDE! :( A set and 2/0 up.... I did wonder if Amélie might not have fully recovered from Philadelphia yet, but I think it will be very hard for her to qualify for the semis now, she needed to beat Chanda. (I think Chanda will get to the semis).

Also annoying is that the stats show that she was better than Chanda in most aspects of the match, (except winning the points that mattered I guess! ;))

Amélie----------------------------------Chanda
--67%------------1st Serve---------------64%
---5------------------Aces-------------------3
---2------------Double Faults---------------4
--46---------------Winners-----------------37
--30-----------Unforced Errors------------41
-3/12---------Break Points won----------5/15
-36/56---------Net Points won-----------34/53

Nov 6th, 2003, 04:57 PM
The situation really isn't as bad as it seems. We must face the awful truth that Kim Clijsters is likely to win every match in the group however Dementieva practically owns Chanda this year. Now if Amélie can beat Elena and if Elena can beat Chanda the group is wide open again. Of all the situations I think it is the most likely to happen. What is a certainty is Amélie has got to win tonight - YOU'VE GOT YOUR SECOND CHANCE MOMO - TAKE IT!

maya
Nov 7th, 2003, 05:52 AM
:bounce: She won :bounce:

(... and she even played close to good at the end of last set :D ).

Now some calculations from me, the math genius ;) :

4 4 Davenport, Lindsay 2990.00
5 6 Mauresmo, Amelie 2846.00

Momo!! Get that no 4!! She needs to reach semifinal :tape: Even if she beat Kim, she is still 44 points behind Davey :tape:

1. I think she gets more points than Davenport then - "incalculated" are only first round losers (4. place) points and she'll be at least 3. (121 points, not 67) - that's if you took the points from GM where they have them calculated.
2736 + 121 + 43 + 100 = 3000

2. If Amelie wants to reach the semis, she has to either beat Kim in 2 sets or Elena has to beat Chanda (if in 2 sets, Elena is 3. and Chanda 4.).

For now I will strongly ignore the way Elena and Amelie have been playing here and hope they both win 2:0 their next match. Should be reeeealy easy :p .

Thanks everyone for the pics! (Lol@Griffin!! ) Especially love the net pics - Amélie is such a natural volleyer; beautiful to watch!! :D (75% success, 15/20, for net approaches against Elena last night! :D )

Félicitations Amélie!! Bien Joué!! :bigclap: :bigclap: :bigclap:

A quote from Amélie from L'Equipe following the Chanda match (thanks to Minou from the official site):

Babelfished:

"It is so much frustrating to let spin a match as this one whereas I controlled the situation well after having made a success of the service break at the start of the second set," regretted the Frenchwoman. "Gradually, I lost of my clarity of thought(?) and, once that I found myself at a set all, I yielded also physically. It should be said that the match had been testing with some very long and very disputed rallies, and perhaps that I still had in the legs the two long brawls of the semi-final and the final of Philadelphia. But it is really disappointing to undergo such a defeat a few days after having gained a tournament. I thought, thanks to the test of very successful preparation, that I was going to arrive to Los Angeles at the signal of my confidence. Unfortunately, I did not succeed in holding a whole match."

Stats from match against Elena:

Amélie------------------------Elena
-59%--------1st Serve--------69%
--2--------------Ace------------0
--3---------Double Faults------2
-17------------Winners---------9
-22--------Unforced Errors----22
-4/6------Break Points won---1/5
15/20-----Net Points won-----5/7

CrHuAbNiDnA the mature thing to do would be to delete that post. When Chanda beat Amélie you didn't see any of us running to badmouth Chanda. We were sad but we gave her nothing but the Congratulations she deserved.

CrHuAbNiDnA the mature thing to do would be to delete that post. When Chanda beat Amélie you didn't see any of us running to badmouth Chanda. We were sad but we gave her nothing but the Congratulations she deserved.

Have some respect for your fellow posters!

:bounce: :bounce: Phew I'm so happy Momo is in the semis - Elena D suddenly woke up and played outstanding. I feel sorry for Chanda she is such a class act.

As for the Eurosport commentators  they think losing 4 sets and winning 3 is better than losing 4 sets and winning 4. Their round robin scoreboard is all wrong too - they had a result in the Jenn/Myskina box before they'd played. You'd think an ex player and ex offical could figure out a round robin system :p

Masters WTA - Mauresmo qualified in semi-finals thanks to Dementieva

Los Angeles, Nov. 8 (AFP) - the Frenchwoman Amélie Mauresmo obtained her place in semi-finals of female Masters of tennis, test of closure season WTA, thanks to the victory of the Russian Elena Dementieva over American Chanda Rubin (4-6, 7-5, 6-1), Saturday in Los Angeles.

"That made of the good", declared the Frenchwoman after having followed the meeting since her hotel room of Santa Monica. "It is true that it was a particular situation to look with television what was going to occur between Dementieva and Rubin to know if I went in semi-finals. I am delighted!"

Mauresmo, which counted only one victory in the red group, precisely over Dementieva, was qualified with the difference in sets to the costs of Rubin, that one even which had beaten it the first day.

The Frenchwoman had succeeded in taking a set at the time of her two defeats, the second vis-a-vis with the Belgian Kim Clijsters, ensured of the first place of the group by gaining her three matches.

"It was badly started, but Dementieva was successful to turn over the situation", commented Mauresmo, in reference to the capacity of the Russian to reverse the situation whereas she had lost the first set and was carried out 5-2 in the following one.

"I thus will buy her (Dementieva) a beautiful gift", joked the Frenchwoman who will face Saturday in semi-final the Belgian Justine Hénin-Hardenne, assured of the first place of the black group before even her 3rd match vis-a-vis with the Japanese woman Ai Sugiyama.

Dementieva, for her part, recalled with the smile that she had owed her place in Masters 2002 thanks to the withdrawal of Mauresmo on wound, and that her victory of the day was thus a "return of favour". :D

Brian Stewart

I almost wish I drank, at times like this. I haven't seen a player so uptight in a match since... Saturday. Momo was doing a lot of the same things Chanda did: not attacking enough, pulling back on her shots, dropping the ball in the middle of the court for her opponent to tee off on. And of course, when they're nervous, they don't move the feet very well.

We Chanda fans can sympathize about how painful it is to see your fave play at a fraction of her ability in a big match. :(

Another thing this match showed was why ex-serve/volleyers are superior announcers to ex-baseliners. Pam correctly observed how Momo wasn't being aggressive. Mary Joe blurted out that it was because Kim wasn't "letting" her do it. She totally missed how Momo was hitting too short and yielding control of the rallies. This is the same type of lack of tennis knowledge that led some writers to proclaim that Dementieva "stepped up" or "took control" Saturday, when her level didn't change at all.

The fact is, when a player is nervous, she tends to hit short, and move poorly. This allows the opponent to hit a lot of "winners" because they are in the forecourt, and the nervous player is late in reacting. Someone who doesn't really know a lot about the sport would tend to give all of the credit to the person piling up the "winners", because they see them hitting shots that the other "can't" track down (because they are slowed by nerves). The trained eye knows to observe what the players are doing from neutral and favorable positions.

So, Momo fans be warned. Prepare yourselves for a bunch of inaccurate articles by writers who don't know what they're looking at. I've certainly seen a few of them in the past few days.

And in fairness to Kim, this is not to suggest that she would not have won had Momo played better. But Momo certainly would have won more games.

The only thing worse than watching your favorite player choke is watching your second favorite player do it too, in the same tourney. And as there seems to be a lot of crossover between Momo and Chanda fans, there are a lot of unhappy campers this week.

Hmm, maybe a sip...
