ana was at DFS Classic shes very good and has a bright future she also will been invited to wimbledon quallies or something like that if not she will be playing in the juniors :) i was talking to her mum and she told me this but i wasnt quite sure excatly what she meant about the wimbledon thing. But either was quallies or juniors she is there :)

i watched her play the match with Barna at DFS she was extremely unlucky to face Barna but did soooo well it was a very tight match and bascially what it came down to was the fact that ana gave Barna too much respect as to who she is, still she played very well and is looking to be a bright star in the future

sprem last year had an awesome challenger record, came onto the wta tour and did a decent job. na li this year had an awesome challenger record, came onto the wta tour and won a title in her 2nd tournament. ana hasnt done quite so well in the wta events as the other 2 have but she does have the awesome challenger record that they have, and whats impressive is that they are all pretty big challenger tourns. ana has the talent, i expect something big from her soon. you can do it ana!

Getting to Know...
Ana Ivanovic

If her two main draw matches at the Swisscom Challenge in Zurich were any indication of what's to come from Ana Ivanovic, the top players on the WTA Tour may want to avoid the path of this newest up-and-comer from Serbia & Montenegro. In two matches in Zurich, Ivanovic pushed fellow 16-year-old Tatiana Golovin to 25 games including a pair of tie-breaks and then demostrated control and determination in twice coming back from large deficits to take Venus Williams to another pair of tie-breaks.

Ivanovic, who turns 17 on November 7, began the year ranked No.705 in the world but has quickly risen all the way to a career-best No.152 and should set another high ranking following her successful week in Zurich.

WTATour.com sat down with Ana this week in Zurich to find out more about this rising star on the women's Tour.

How did you get started playing tennis?
I started playing tennis when I was five years old. None else in my family played tennis but I loved watching it on television, especially Monica Seles. I kept asking my parents if they would take me to tennis classes, and eventually they did.

You had an impressive 31-3 record coming into Zurich, winning all 31 matches played on the ITF Circuit. How important was it for you to play so many matches at that level so early in your career?
Well, started this year ranked around 700, playing $10,000 tournaments, sometimes coming through qualies, playing eight matches in one week. But it was good for me because I got a lot of match practice, and winning those matches gave me a lot of self-confidence. Now I'm playing at a higher level this has definitely helped me.

What goals have you set for yourself?
At the beginning of this year my aim was to be Top 150 by the end of this year, but I'm already at about that ranking, so I would like to be 100, so I can get into the main draw of the Australian Open. Of course, in the future I would like to be Top 10, and eventually No.1.

What do you like most about being a professional tennis player?
It's just the feeling of doing something that I love doing. I'm very lucky to have a job that I really enjoy. Having the chance to compete and travel around the world, it's a very nice thing for me.

Which tennis player do you most admire, and why?
Roger Federer. The way he acts on and off the court I think is great. He's so professional in the way he plays, and all the things he does, in interviews and everything else.

What has been your most memorable tennis experience so far?
Last year I played an exhibition in Basel (Switzerland) with (Yannick) Noah and (Mansour) Bahrami, which was lots of fun. And of course playing here this week is also up there. I had only played two other WTA events (Birmingham and Vienna), but this is the first Tier I I've played, and the first time I've won a WTA match, so it's been great.

What things do you like doing in your spare time?
I like watching movies, either at the cinema or on DVD at home. I also like to read and to listen to music - pop and R&B. I like to play basketball; my younger brother (13-year-old Milos) plays a lot, but I'm taller than him at the moment so I usually beat him!

What is your favorite place to visit and why?
I love to visit Melbourne, because I have some family there and I have visited them, so I have nice memories. I also like Switzerland, where I train some times.

Other tidbits:
* She has a Web site at www.anaivanovic.com (http://www.anaivanovic.com/)
* She was formerly coached by Eric Van Harpen, and has been working with Zoltan Kuharsky for the past three weeks
* Her favorite food is brownies
* She's won all her ITF Circuit matches this year (31)

Ana interview after her match yesterday, and I dont think she's getting a Swiss passport, not according to her dad she isnt.

Ana Ivanovic: It was a great expirience
Interview with Ana Ivanovic (after losing in two tie-breakers against Venus Williams)

Are you more lucky having played such a good match or sad having lost such a tied match?

"It was definitely a tide match and I’m happy to be here having the chance to play against her. It was a great experience for me even I lost. I think next time it will be better. I’m happy the I could play against such a good player and I definitely gave my best. My game was fine but it could be better. I think a few shots decided in the end but she played very good."

What do you take from this match?

"I got some points were I should work more and I should be more consistent."

What happened with the backhand volley (at the set point)?

"I think I was perhaps a little bit tired. The thing is I just miss it and was not there at this second. I had some chances to win a set but in these moments she served or played so good."

Journalist: What will be your ranking next week and what are you doing next week?

Ivanovic: I think I’ll be around 110. Next week I’m going to Luxembourg to recover because I’m really tired.

Question:Ana, what is your goal for the upcoming season?

First I want to enter top 50 in next 6 months, and then to go higher. I would be satisfied if I could enter top 30 at the end of this season.

Question: What do you like most in tennis? What was your best match so far?

I have the opportunity to do what I like most, to compete and travel, to play against the most famous tennis players. If I have to choose, then the match against Venus Williams last year in Zurich was my best match so far. And fans really supported me there, and were with me during the whole match.

Question: Are you looking forward to Melbourne?

Melbourne left a great impression on me. Not only because of the Australian Open, but also because I have relatives there. I would like to say to my fans that they can expect something good from me this year in Australia.

Question: Is it true that Federer is your idol?

I like R. Federer cause of the way he plays, and he is a great player and an true professional. Really deserves to be the best.

Ana's AO draw:
1R: Benesova
2R: Kirilenko or Kapros
3R: most likely Mauresmo

Looks difficult, but I actually think it's a good draw. It was a lottery, she could have ended up with Lindsay or Serena in the first round! I think she may very well advance to the third round, and if she plays Mauresmo it would be a great experience for her.

Gowza
Jan 13th, 2005, 11:36 PM
dont count out stosur or safina to be in that 3rd round over mauresmo, and zheng got to the final this week she could be a potnetial even. benesova has been playing quite well this year so i thnk its a tough opener, could go either way but i think ana will take it. 2nd round kirilenko and kapros both are talented but neither have really shown there potential at least not consistently, if they have a good day they could get over ana but i think ana has a good chance against either of those players. 3rd round lets not talk about yet, still got to get past the first couple of rounds.

Ivanovic wins Canberra Classic

Associated Press

1/15/2005

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) - Serbia-Montenegran teenager Ana Ivanovic won her first WTA Tour title Saturday with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Melinda Czink at the Canberra Classic.

The 17-year-old Ivanovic took 83 minutes to beat the Hungarian in the first tour final between a lucky loser and the player who beat them in qualifying.

Ivanovic eliminated Czink in the last round of qualifying but the Hungarian made the main draw after Auckland Classic winner Katarina Srebotnik withdrew with an injury.

Czink, 22, was within two points of taking the first set at 5-4 on serve after winning three straight games. But Ivanovic, cheered on by a vocal contingent from the local Serbian community, lost just one more game for the remainder of the match.

''I was really nervous in the beginning,'' said Ivanovic, last year's junior Wimbledon finalist.

''I somehow pulled through the first set and in the second set it was quite tough - she was really playing good in the beginning but I didn't do too much wrong.''

Czink, whose extended run at Canberra prevented her from playing in Australian Open qualifying, said she put too much pressure on herself.

''I'm very happy that I made the final but obviously I'm disappointed that I didn't win,'' she said. ''I didn't play my best today. I had a chance but I didn't live with it.

Sadly the Australian adventure has ended, and on a bit of a sad note. That match was no good.
But she can do much more. She definitely has it in herself, just has to keep working, and getting more experience. I suspect nerves had a major part in this loss, so with many more matches under her belt she will overcome those problems.

Anyway, she had an amazing couple of weeks Down Under, she will move inside the top 75 I think. Well done!

Indeed the Australian Adeventure has ended... it has given her a tournament, Richard Luton Properties Canberra, and a great first Grand Slam participation. If we really think about it... she did awesomely great.... her performance was extremely outstanding... But perhpas we just expected too much from her, and understimated so much Mauresmo. Within my heart though I really hope Ana keeps this up... cause what she has done... is more than enough to prove that she will be some day in the top ten... :D

I really want to hear her about the match. It just wasn't her. In Zurich she was kicking Tatiana and Venus and it was breathtaking. What's up with 1st serve , and everything else was like on 40% of her game. But her record this year is 10-1 :). And playing to world no.2 was a good preparation for what will come. Amelie was terrible too, but far better then Ana. Anyway she won a title, beat two top 40 this year and as far as i'm concerned she done enough :). She was far more impressive then Jankovic who shocked me with her loss. Good luck girls. Ana will get to top 65 i think. By TBE rankings she's on 62, but Linetskaya and Douchevina went to round 4, and i don't think anyway behind her is still in comeptition. So on January 2nd she was no.101 and on jan.30 she'll be 64 or 65 :).

Yeah, I agree with you completely. I want to know what happened. I wouldn't recognize her at all... She had no self-confidence, her forehand was gone and the serve, although fantastic at times really wasn't there. She tried to pump herself up, shouting "'Ajde", but it wasn't convincing either. So yes, I'd say it wasn't her. Perhaps the nerves were too much to handle.
And the idiots in the crowd should learn it's not a football match, but a tennis match. That was NOT a way to cheer for a tennis player at all!!!!!

Things are still sort of different.... Consider that the temperature is hotter, more arid, and sunnier..... As far as I know... her homeland is not like that. Nevertheless, perhaps she felt intimidated because she was playing to the number 2 seed, or perhaps she just never beleived that she could win.

She has a brilliant future awaiting her.... this is good....

I agree with you and i think it's also the first time she played at the center court of a grand slam.... Or maybe, she lacked a lil bit of experience to play 2 weeks in a row at a high level. With time and more tournaments ,I think it will be better....Or, it's just because she hasn't yet the mark of great players: to win even if you play badly, when it's a day off.

Mauresmo tips bright future for Ivanovic
15:34 AEDT Fri Jan 21 2005

As Australian Open contender Amelie Mauresmo acknowledged, the tennis world will see a lot more of Ana Ivanovic.

Mauresmo had to recover from a service break down in the second set to overcome the rich talents of the Serbian teenager to move into the fourth round at Melbourne Park for the fifth time in seven years.

It was Ivanovic's first defeat from 11 matches in 2005 after the 17-year-old served notice to her more experience rivals with the biggest rankings leap in history last season.

The tall, powerful 17-year-old soared 608 spots to finish 2004 as the world No.97 and can expect to climb further after clinching her first career title in Canberra last week and making the third round in her debut appearance at a grand slam.

Ivanovic is looking to kick on to break into the top 50 this year and Mauresmo is one player believing the youngster's time will come.

"We're probably going to see a lot more of her in the next few years," the world No.2 said.

"I didn't know her before today, but apparently she's been improving a lot in these last few months and this last year.

"She probably needs to move around a little bit better, but if she can improve that, she hits the ball pretty hard, she's not afraid to come in and come to the net and she served pretty well sometimes."

Indeed, while a tad disappointed with her delivery today, Ivanovic considers her service one of her many weapons to take her to the top.

"And my mental part. I also try to be tough," said Serbia's answer to the decline of the country's former No.1 Jelena Dokic.

"I think I have also good groundstrokes, but also (I have) quite a lot of things to improve and to work on.

"Today is going to be great experience for me. This is my first appearance in a centre court, so I'm pretty happy.

"I was a little bit nervous at the start, and in the second set also I was a little bit disappointed with my service game in the end.

"But that's experience. Next time I hope I won't make the same mistakes."

Yep, hopefully she'll do just that. I like the possibilities for the qualifier placements as well:

Marta Marrero, then probably Patty
Virginia Razzano, then Venus
Karolina Sprem, then another qualifier or Camerin
Camerin, then probably Sprem

I think the most favorable option would probably be Camerin or Sprem because she'll end up in Myskina's section of the draw. Re-matches against Venus or Momo would be quite interesting as well. Ana will start upsetting these players very soon I think!

Since i live in Serbia, i can assure you that Ana is MUCH more popular than Jelena among ordinary sports fans and in all the media. I suppose that’s primarily because she’s soooo cute, and Jelena… well she’s not. (but i still love her as well). Maybe she said those things, and maybe you misunderstood her. I beleive my own ears, I know what I heard. Also I think that Jelena is better looking but that's not the point ( JJ looks like a model, and Ana is too big for a girl, strong built,) Everything that I wrote is true, and also Jelena is the tennis queen in Serbia and everybody knows her and Jelena Dokic but Ana is just getting there. Either way, I also like Ana but that's not the way to talk bad other players.
Ok, Ok, i kinda believe you, just stop thrashing Ana from now on.
As for the photos, well i still like Ana more, but i have to admit that JJ is sexier. All i’m saying is that Ana is definitely more popular than JJ, at least in Serbia, (fact, ask around) hence no reason to be jealous. I’m shutting up now

Why are you so negative towards Ana. She is a really nice girl, a true fighter just like Jelena. I admitt Jelena is bit in a slump, but when she's on fire noone can stop her. And we all know what Ana is capable of doing. Girls run and run and run. I really admire them even if i'm a guy. Who wants to match men tennis when you have a fighters like Ana and Jelena. I'm still going trough Ana vs. Tati and vs. Venus. I was at my fathers at London and we went to the pub. We asked the guy to put tennis on, and when he saw Ana he'd put on big screen, and everyone was cheering for her, and they had no idea who she was. I really doubt those guys saw anything but Arsenal games, but that made some tennis fans there. Great momment :)

I feel like i'm in twilight zone!!!

There's no way that JJ is more popular in Serbia than Ana. Don’t get me wrong, i always cheer for JJ, it’s just that i think she’s a bit of a dog. On the other hand, Ana has the face of an angel, and the effect that she have on the male population is quite amazing. Every guy that i know has some sort of crush on her, even the people that have no interest in tennis at all.

i was on the tournament when i heard ,Ana talking about Jelena J and she didn't know that i speak also little bit of serbian. So it is true, she wants to be
very popular (becouse in serbia JJ is much more popular then her)and Jelena
is standing on her way to popularity (JJ ranked 28 in the world and becouse of that having more space in newspapers and having  the title The Best Serbian player).

He he. Maybe that's not too bad. They'll be so envious of one another so they will have to play extremely well to prove who's the better player :bounce:

Btw, i'm a lil bit disappointed by Ana's performance at Antwerp     but Razzano can be a dangerous player, she won 2 grand slams in juniors and beat kuzzie at wimbly last year.Better luck in Middle East Ana   :) I still think you're very very talented:D
And Duiz is right, don't judge players by their physicall apparence :p :)
And IMO, Ana is prettier than JJ in face but Jeca has a prettier body. JJ looks beautiful off court because she puts make up and nice clothes, if Ana would do the same, she would be even more gorgeous:p but they are both cutties all the same :) :)

Stop this BS, please! Whoever said there were only a couple of articles about Ana and such... Please! That's ridiculous. She was all over the media for the last couple of months. And so was Jelena. They are both really liked and have lots of fans and media attention so enough with this stupid arguements. As for the looks, some prefer Ana, some Jelena, so what?

As for the match, I'm disappointed. But it has to be said, Virginie is not bad at all, and who knows, maybe she (like most of us here) already had Venus on her mind, and wasn't focused for this particular match.

I think we all easily forget how little experience she has. She didn't play much in juniors, and as a pro in total she played just 9 challengers, 6 WTA tournaments and 1 GS. That's so little! And she's already in top 70. She's no longer an unknown force, she just can't catch other players by surprise and blast them off the court. They known her by now. And she still has to learn how to win when things are going badly, when she isn't at her best, or is simply unlucky. She has to learn to stay focused, and that will come with more matches under her belt and more experience.

you are right, doubles can help a lot to improve but i think Ana will play it when she'll have a better single ranking that can prevent her from playing quali. Like Spar said, it is very tiring to play 3 qualification matches then MD in singles + qualification in doubles and eventually MD in doubles, it's something like 10 matches per day. :o A lil bit too much and if she plays too much, she risks to be injuried.
